Arachova had a long tradition on making rugs and carpets on looms -as most villages had till a few decades ago to be honest. I know that some houses still have the great-grandmas looms standing in one corner and the older generations occasionaly teach the younger how to use them. I remember there was a related seminar a couple of winters ago in the former jounior school building by the famous clock tower where an old lady showd the tricks on the younger people interested. All that said, while many shops still sell things created ages ago and much of what you see is original, many shops or even the very same shops sell lots of machine manufactured stuff imported from other places of Greece or abroad. To buy or not to buy and what to buy is a personal call I guess. Bargaining per ce is not the norm in Greece, what you sometime can get is a small discount say 10-15%, especially if you pay with cash. I know people keep saying this is for tax evasion, but while sometimes there is a true on this, that's not usually the case. Ask for a receipt and you are covered on that asepct. The thing is that most small buisinesses, shops etc in Greece work on a very small profit margin and commision kept by banks while using a credit card really makes a difference for them. As Greece is still a very cash-driven economy having money on hand rather than wait from 3-10 days to have them in your bank account is an other motivation, especially now with the capital controls and all that jazz. Now, usually if your tour guide makes a stop to a specific shop, most likely this shop pays commision to the guide and/or the travel agent, so most likely the prices you'll pay have to factor that in. If you can, it worrths to roam around and check items and prices on surrounding shops, provided you are not located in the middle of nowhere.

Arahova Souvlaki, the Greek restaurant chain that opened in 1971 with a three-item menu, two tables and nine chairs on St. Viateur St., is now expanding nationally. The Arahova Souvlaki brand is owned by two related families of Greek heritage, which each operate separate companies.It has been almost 50 years since Christos Kalogrias opened a tiny café and lunch stop in Laval called Arahova Souvlaki. Today, 10 franchises are thriving while the company’s line of different products, from tzatziki to taramosalata, can be found at a variety of grocery stores.
