Zoetermeer is a city in the Western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of 37.05 km2 (14.31 sq mi) of which 2.50 km2 (0.97 sq mi) is water. A small village until the late 1960s, it had 6,392 inhabitants in 1950. By 2013 this had grown to 123,328, making it the third largest population centre in the province of South Holland, after Rotterdam and The Hague. It is part of the Haaglanden conurbation.

The name Zoetermeer (Dutch for "freshwater lake") refers to the former lake north of the town (reclaimed in 1614). Because the name literally translates as "sweet lake" local residents have dubbed Zoetermeer "Sweet Lake City".

Transport

Light rail

The former Zoetermeer Stadslijn urban railway was rebuilt as light rail in 2006/2007. The stadslijn was the only urban railway in The Netherlands. It had 12 stations in Zoetermeer and ran to and from The Hague Central Station.

The new light rail system is part of the RandstadRail network between The Hague, Rotterdam and Zoetermeer. Besides the rebuilt Stadslijn, which now has 13 stations, the new line Oosterheemlijn leads to the new suburb Oosterheem. The Oosterheemlijn currently has three stations, but will be extended with 2 more by May 2019.

Heavy rail

Zoetermeer has two stations on the main railway between The Hague and Utrecht. Zoetermeer-Zegwaard, built when the city was connected by railway in 1868, burnt down in 1906. Later the station reopened 1965 on the same location as Zoetermeer-Oost. The main station, Zoetermeer station, was opened in 1973. Lastly, the newest station, Station Lansingerland-Zoetermeer, was completed in May 2019.

The HSL-Zuid high speed line from Amsterdam to Paris passes Zoetermeer on its eastern side. Although there have been proposals to open a station on the line, this seems highly unlikely this will be realized.

Motorway

Zoetermeer is next to the A12 motorway, connecting The Hague with Utrecht, Arnhem and Germany.

Zoetermeer's economy is primarily dependent and revolving around Information technology. With modern infrastructure, a highly digitised centre called 'het Forum' that houses city hall, the central library and numerous other organisations, and many schools that offer IT-related education, it also is a major software development centre, with many software developers based here. Given the large number of IT companies with branches in Zoetermeer, like Siemens, which has its Dutch Tech Campus in Zoetermeer, and Toshiba Medical Systems Europe BV, it's not surprising that 20% of the population of Zoetermeer has an IT-related job. The local government designates a comparatively large part of the budget to computers for schools.

To stress the IT tradition of Zoetermeer, the city is the first in the world to have a city hall in Second Life.

Projects Inner city

1, Upgrade Stadshart

On July 30, 2020, it was officially announced that contractor Bunnik will carry out the work in the Stadshart from the beginning of September 2020. More information about this project can be found at: www.zoetermeer.nl/upgradestadshart .

The Stadshart of Zoetermeer will have a completely new look with more color and atmosphere in the coming years. The shops are getting bigger, the public area is being tackled and the parking garages have been refurbished. We do this in collaboration with property owner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and other owners in the Stadshart.

In order to keep the Stadshart attractive now and in the future, part of the public area in the Stadshart will be redesigned. Buro Sant en Co, in consultation with a number of stakeholders, such as the owner and a sounding board group, made a final design for the public area .

There are several real estate owners in the Stadshart. The municipality would also like to make agreements with them about the redevelopment of the areas that are currently outside the project, because the municipality wants to have the same image for the entire city center.

Latest news

On July 30, 2020, the municipality officially announced that contractor Bunnik will carry out the work between the Spazio and Driekant (Douglas store). The selection was made on the basis of a combination of price and quality, also known as Best Price Quality Ratio (BPKV). The plans of the various contractors who have registered have been assessed on the following criteria, among other things: environmental management, cooperation, planning and sustainability.

The contractor will start work in early September 2020. The total work will take about 2 years and will be carried out in phases. The contractor is expected to complete the entire work by the end of April 2022.

The area that the contractor will renovate runs from Spazio to Driekant (Douglas shop). In addition, the Brusselstraat will also be redesigned. This will be a bicycle street.

During the execution, the contractor takes into account the corona measures that have been taken in the City Center. Shops and catering facilities remain accessible, subject to 1.5 meters.

Felling trees City center

For the implementation of the new design, the municipality will need to cut nine trees and relocate two trees. Eleven new trees will be planted in the new design. On July 23, 2020, the municipality applied for an environmental permit for the felling and replanting.

2, Horecaplein Dorpsstraat

On 6 July, the last tile with the year 2020 was placed on Horecaplein by Alderman Paalvast and Alderman Iedema. The redesigned Horecaplein of the Dorpsstraat has now been officially opened.

Schedule

The catering square on Dorpsstraat was renovated in March 2020. This contributes to the economic vitality and quality impulse of the Dorpsstraat. The municipality provided tighter paving and a less cluttered public space. If necessary, the entrepreneurs provide new furniture and make agreements with each other about maintenance.

Consultation

Entrepreneurs are involved throughout the entire process (from sketch design to final design). An information evening was also held in the summer of 2018 where the municipality explained the design.

3, Renewal Vision City Center

Vision City Center 2040 ready in concept

The city center is facing new challenges due to, among other things, the task of adding homes, competition with the region when it comes to living and shopping, but also due to the socio-economic position of Zoetermeer.

An updated vision of the development of the city center is therefore necessary. The city center is there for shopping, living, working and staying. It is not just about stacking bricks, adding homes in the city center, but also realizing a higher quality for the city center.

What do we want to achieve?

The result that we want to see is a city center with high-quality urban living environments, eye-catching architecture, a wide range of social and cultural facilities, a lively street scene, a safe, beautiful and pleasant public space and greenery. At least 2,000 homes will be added. There is also more space for cyclists and pedestrians. We express this ambition in the concept of Vision Inner City 2040.

To the city council

In July 2020, the Mayor and Aldermen sent the concept City Center Vision to the city council. You can find it below under 'Downloadable'.

4, Cadenza 2: a new housing plan

 6.png

The location Cadenza 2 on Italy Avenue has been in the picture for residential construction for some years now. In March 2018, the municipal council adopted the Cadenza 2 basic principles memorandum . The wish is to realize youth homes and apartments here.

For this we will select a developer through a selection procedure who will then draw up a design for the location. Consultation starts when these plans have been worked out in more detail.

Situation

On June 9, 2020, the Municipal Executive has approved the start of the procedure to select a developer who will realize new construction at this location. The current destination of the location is 'Traffic'. To make housing possible, a zoning change is necessary. The Mayor and Aldermen also approved the preliminary draft zoning plan on 9 June 2020 and sent it to the city council. This preliminary design is discussed in the City Committee.

The local residents have received a letter about this. You can download it below.

5, (Construction) projects and planning in the inner city at a glance

A lot is happening in the city center. As a municipality, we would like to keep you informed of the latest developments. In this pdf (Planning ontwikkel- en bouwprojecten binnenstad 20200707.pdf) you will find an overview of all development and construction projects in the city center. The locations covered by the acceleration agenda are indicated in red.

 五、风景名胜,景点

This former new town used to be a satellite city of The Hague, as many residents worked, shopped and were entertained in The Hague. With the growth of Zoetermeer came a large theatre, mega cinema, and other entertainment such as go-karts, laser gaming, survival centre, and a golf centre. The "Locomotion" discothèque, the first mega disco of The Netherlands, was the oldest of them. Locomotion closed its doors in 2011 and has since become a restaurant called Eten Enzo.

Parks

Zoetermeer has many parks, the biggest being the "Westerpark" on the west side of town. It is almost as large as Central Park in New York. Other notable parks are the "Buytenpark", the "Aldo van Eyckpark", the "Binnenpark", the "Van Tuyllpark (with Dutch Water Dreams and Aquapark Keerpunt), the "Hoekstrapark", the "Wilhelminapark", the "floriade park", the "Seghwaertse Hout" and the "Seghwaertpark".

At the north side there is a lake, the "Zoetermeerse Plas", often called "Noord Aa" because it is in the Noord Aa Recreational Area. There is a beach along one side of the lake and a marina on the other. Wind- and kite surfing, sailing and fishing are the most popular activities on the lake.

On both the west and east side of the city forests are being planted, called "Balijbos" (west side) and Bentwoud (east side). These forests are intended to form a "natural" barrier between The Hague and Zoetermeer.

SnowWorld

 8.png

SnowWorld indoor ski slope

SnowWorld was the first indoor ski slope made of real snow in Europe, opened in 1996. It now has three slopes, of which the 200-metre (660-foot) slope is the longest. Plans are being made to extend this to 300 metres (980 feet). Already open since December 2016. SnowWorld attracts over a million visitors each year, making it the most important tourist attraction in Zoetermeer.

Dutch Water Dreams

Dutch Water Dreams (DWD) was an artificial Olympic wild water rafting circuit. It was a copy of the one built in China for the 2008 Olympic Games and was mainly used for training by European rafting teams, and also for team building and recreation. DWD also had an indoor Flowrider centre. Dutch Water Dreams closed in 2015.

Silverdome

Silverdome is an indoor Olympic ice skating track and convention centre. It is used as a training centre for the KNSB, the Dutch Olympic and world championship ice skaters. Outside the skating season it is used as a convention centre and concert hall and for large raves.

Indoor Dive

There are plans to build an indoor diving centre in Zoetermeer. 70 metres (230 feet) in diameter and 30 metres (98 feet) deep, it will be the largest indoor diving centre in the world. There will be a coral reef and underwater caves and a large beach around the edge. Ten thousand lives, tropical fish should make it as realistic as possible.

六、历史文化

In the tenth century Zoetermeer was a small village primarily home to farmers and fishermen. In the 13th century a village center was formed, which still exists as the historic Dorpsstraat. Until the 17th century there was a lake called the Zoetermeer. A reminder of this is the "Zoetermeerse Plas" in the Noord Aa recreation area at the northern edge of town; this artificial lake was created when tons of sand were needed to lay the foundation for new housing development, and the area north of Zoetermeer was a good source of this resource.

Until 1935 the village centre was split into two villages, Zoetermeer and Zegwaard. The standard of living at the time was said to be higher in Zoetermeer than in Zegwaard. Seghwaert, an older way of spelling of Zegwaard, is now the name of a neighbourhood outside the old village centre.

Zoetermeer began to grow slightly when the first train service came around 1868. A few decades later the Numico factory started near the station. The real growth started in 1966, when there was an urgent need of houses from people around The Hague. From then they started to build new quarters around the old village centre, so Zoetermeer began to grow and became a city in the meantime.

Although contemporary Zoetermeer has the image of a modern city, there are still remains of the past. Like the old village centre with its small houses and the church with late medieval 15th-century clock tower (on picture, wooden top from 1642), and the old farms, surrounded by modern houses nowadays.

Lake Dobbe divides the old town from the new city centre, with the medieval village centre on one side of the lake and the modern high-rise and skyscrapers on the other side.

七、其他信息

Religion

Zoetermeer is the only place in the Netherlands with a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is situated near the old village centre.

Art in Zoetermeer

Art in public space (s) increases the attractiveness of Zoetermeer and is therefore an important calling card of the city. Visual art also improves the quality and experience of our living environment, because the interaction often arises between art, public space and the spectators. It makes living and life in the neighborhood more fun. It elicits reactions, as a resident you are made to think: you immediately have an opinion about it. Art is also a meeting place, a striking point that everyone knows and recognizes.

The rapid growth of the city has ensured that a high-quality collection of visual art has been built up in public space. Part of the financing was reserved for art for each (new) construction project. This percentage scheme resulted in approximately 175 autonomous and integrated works of art near and in public buildings and in the public area. The collection provides a cross-section of the history of art in the public domain.
