Schiedam is a city and municipality in the west of the Netherlands. It is located in the Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area, west of Rotterdam, east of Vlaardingen, and south of Delft. In the south the city is connected with the village of Pernis by the Beneluxtunnel.

The city is known for its historical center with canals, and for having the tallest windmills in the world. Schiedam is also well known for the distilleries and malthouses and production of jenever (gin) − such as the internationally renowned Ketel One − so much so that in French and English the word schiedam (usually without a capital s-) refers to the town's Holland gin. This was the town's main industry during the early Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century, a dark period to which it owed its former nickname "Zwart Nazareth" or "Black Nazareth". Furthermore, the city is known for Saint Lidwina, one of the most famous Dutch saints (her relics are located in the Liduina Basilica in Schiedam).

Schiedam Centrum is a railway station and metro station in Schiedam, just to the west of Rotterdam, Netherlands, on the railway line between The Hague and Rotterdam Centraal. Train services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen, and metro, tram and bus services are operated by Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram.

History

The station opened on 3 June 1847 as Schiedam, with The Hague – Rotterdam railway line. The branch to Maassluis opened in 1891, extended to Hoek van Holland two years later. In 1967 the station was renamed Schiedam-Rotterdam West, and in 1998 it was renamed again to Schiedam Centrum.

In 2000, the railway building was completely renewed as part of the extension of the East-West Line of the Rotterdam Metro, which has called at Schiedam Centrum since November 2002.

In 2017, railway services to Hoek van Holland ceased as the line would be converted for metro operations. Service to Hoek van Holland resumed on 30 September 2019, now operated by RET Metro Line B.

Incidents

In 1856 the first major train accident in the Netherlands occurred near Schiedam causing three deaths.

In 1976 there was a major train disaster near the station, resulting in 24 deaths.

Metro Services

Schiedam Centrum is an important station on Rotterdam Metro lines A, B, and C. Just west of the station is the junction where Lines A and B diverge from Line C to head toward Hoek van Holland. Outside of peak periods, it is also the western terminus of Line A.

Tram and Bus Services

Several Rotterdam tram and bus lines call at Schiedam Centrum. A tram stop for RET lines 21 and 23 is near the entrances of the railway and the metro station.

Railway station in 2012

Schiedam Nieuwland is a metro station in Schiedam in the Netherlands. Located on the Hoekse Lijn, it is served by RET Metro Line B at all times, and Line A during peak periods.

The station is built on the bridge over the Nieuwe Damlaan, one of the principal streets northwest of the city centre of Schiedam.

History

The station was opened on 1 June 1975 as a railway station and was operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen until 31 March 2017. The station and other infrastructure was then handed over to the Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram (RET) and closed for a 2-year period of renovation and adapting to their metro mode of transportation. The station reopened on 30 September 2019 as part of the Rotterdam Metro.

Services

As of 2019, Schiedam Nieuwland is served by 6 trains per hour on RET Metro Line B, of which 3 per hour travel the full length of the route, and 3 travel only as far as Steendijkpolder

During peak periods, the station is also served by 6 trains per hour on Line a, which travel as far as Vlaardingen West.

1, Spaland / Sveaparken

    The Fields

The municipality of Schiedam will tackle the public area of the De Akkers district. The public area has subsided and must be raised. The paving is in need of improvement or replacement in large parts of the district. The municipality will also replace the sewer

Raising crawl spaces, gardens and front gardens is the responsibility of the residents themselves. On the webpage https://www.schiedam.nl/a-tot-z/ophogen you can read more information about what is involved in the raising.

Back paths are also a concern. These back paths are partly owned by Woonplus.

Magazine

On Friday, May 15, 2020, the first magazine 'Getting Started' was presented to Herbert Nikkels, chairman of the neighborhood association. All addresses have received the magazine.

This magazine is a collaboration between contractor Van Gelder Groep, Area Managers, Stijlgroep and the municipality. Together we form a construction team.

Performance

The implementation of the project will probably start in the autumn of 2020. At this moment it is not yet known exactly when we will start in the streets. This depends on the phasing of the contractor.

Sounding board group

The project team of the municipality of Schiedam is working together with the sounding board group 'De Akkers' on the development plan. Five meetings with the sounding board group took place.

The Gaarden

In the coming years, the municipality of Schiedam will tackle the public space in the De Gaarden district. After the work, this district will again meet the set quality requirements, policy and current legislation and regulations. The municipality has the ambition to make neighborhoods more sustainable. The sewers, roads, traffic, greenery, waste collection, lighting and street furniture are considered.

Give your opinion on the first draft design

In recent months, the project team has been preparing to start raising the neighborhood in early 2022. Commissioned by the municipality of Schiedam, engineering firm Witteveen + Bos made a first sketch design for the neighborhood. You can view the sketch design via the online tool https://degaarden.inbeeld.app/. The municipality has developed this online tool in collaboration with Witteveen + Bos. Raising public areas

The municipality of Schiedam will tackle the outdoor space of the Sveadal district. The public area has subsided and must be raised.

 Increase crawl spaces, carports and private gardens

We advise residents to raise the crawl spaces, carports and (front) gardens.

How long will the work on my street take?

The work on your street will take approximately 3 months. In streets where not many adjustments are required, the work will be shorter.

The costs for redesigning the public area up to the property boundary are paid by the municipality. The other costs are paid by the resident himself.

The project team of the municipality of Schiedam is working with the sounding board group 'Sveadal' on the development plan.

Tramway Loop - Smart Watering

The Municipality of Schiedam will tackle the Smart Watering and the public space near the tram turning loop in Schiedam-Noord. It concerns the route between Kasteelweg and the De Akkers district. The public space has subsided and must be raised. The municipality will also replace the sewer. In addition to the embankment, a number of improvements are being made, such as road safety on Scheepvaartweg-Smart Watering. We are also going to make the area greener. The RET is simultaneously carrying out work on the track .

To research

The municipality and RET have started preparations and have commissioned engineering firm Tauw to draw up the design. A number of studies are currently being conducted and in the coming weeks; such as surveying the area, soil survey, ecological and geotechnical survey.

Performance

The work on the track and the public space will be carried out in combination. Project implementation is scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

2, Woudhoek

Craft district - North

The public area ofthe Ambachtenbuurt-Noord is subsiding. The municipality will increase the public area in the district. At the same time, the sewer is replaced. And in collaboration with the municipality, the utility companies are adjusting the cables and pipes.

Situation

For the realization of the project, the process is as follows:

-- participation of residents; with as end result the layout plan;

-- technical process; elaborating the layout plan into a technical design. The final design is currently being worked out;

-- tendering process; choose the most suitable contractor by tendering;

-- realization process; the start of the work.

The participation with residents has now been completed. There is now an established layout plan. This plan is the basis for the further technical elaboration into a realization plan (specifications and drawings). The development will take approximately until the end of August 2020. After that, the tendering procedure for the contractor will start. The contractor is expected to be known in November 2020. The phasing of the implementation in the district is not yet known, you will hear from the contractor later. The unexpected outbreak of the coronavirus has delayed planning.

Elevation

The municipality is raising the district up to the property boundary. The raising of the drainage pipes and the gardens and the raising of the crawl space under the houses is for the residents themselves.

Material glass foam

The project team is conducting various discussions about the material glass foam. This is a recyclable product that is lightweight. Even lighter than the well-known EPS (polystyrene). Glass foam is not yet widely used on such a large scale. In addition, the material has the property of being able to temporarily absorb water and release it into the substrate at a later time. It is currently being investigated whether it is feasible to use the material within this project.

3, Groenoord

   WarmtelinQ (formerly Pipeline through the Middle)

Gasunie is installing WarmtelinQ. WarmtelinQ is an underground pipe with which residual heat from the port of Rotterdam can be used to heat houses and businesses in South Holland. The WarmtelinQ project is also known as Leiding door het Midden.

Where does WarmtelinQ come from?

WarmtelinQ starts at Vondelingenplaat in the port of Rotterdam. From there, the pipeline runs via Vlaardingen, Schiedam, Midden-Delfland, Delft and Rijswijk to The Hague. On the way there will be a branch near Delft, towards the Westland. In Schiedam, the pipeline will be placed over the Aqua-Ecoduct and then parallel to the A4 tunnel to Midden-Delfland.

Reconstruction of Van Beethovenlaan

Improvement of the road surface

The Van Beethovenlaan is an important thoroughfare in Groenoord. The avenue is used daily by motorists, cyclists, freight traffic, pedestrians and public transport. The intensive use is leaving its mark. For example, the asphalt is visibly due for replacement. This also applies to the  cycle path that borders the avenue.

Attention to 30 kilometers away

The redesign also focuses on driving at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour on Van Beethovenlaan. A few years ago it was decided to change the lane from a 50 km / h road into a 30 km / h road. Such a change requires extra efforts to improve the traffic situation and safety.

Exploratory studies

From July 2020, various investigations will be carried out on and around Van Beethovenlaan.

Tree replacement plan park Z-Flats

The municipality of Schiedam is preparing a tree replacement plan for trees in the green zone behind the Z-Flats. The possibilities for improving the outdoor space in the area are also being investigated.

Avoid danger

The park at the Z-Flats at the Van Beethovenlaan in Groenoord was built in the 1970s. In this green area there are often fast-growing types of trees (poplars and willows) that (can) become dangerous. The municipality of Schiedam wants to prevent this. Therefore, careful research is being done into the condition of the trees.  Various tree studies must map whether the trees in the area have a reasonable future expectation. Trees that need to be cut down will be replaced in stages. A tree replacement plan is drawn up for this. The studies on which this plan is (partly) based will be carried out in the first half of July 2020.

Other points of interest

In the area around the Z-Flats, the municipality of Schiedam also has plans to tackle other aspects of the outdoor space. For example, the possibilities for improving the Jozef Oreliosingel-Z-Flats-Dakpark connection are being examined . This could be done by having walking and cycling paths run in a different way.

Another point of attention in the green zone behind the Z-Flats is the subsidence in the area. Although this is only the case to a limited extent, the municipality of Schiedam wants to come up with sustainable solutions in time. Therefore explored the possibilities for natural sites to sag (and there assortment trees down vote) and to any natural wadi ' to emerge's (watercourses).

Residents' meetings

After completion of the research phase, the municipality of Schiedam will enter into discussions with stakeholders about the possible changes in the outdoor space around the Z-Flats. Resident meetings will be organized for this in the autumn of 2020, possibly online. This depends on the then applicable measures to limit the spread of the corona virus. An invitation for this will be sent on time.

4, Nieuwland

Dr. Schaepmansingel

The Dr. Schaepmansingel and surroundings are in need of major maintenance. The paving, lighting and greenery will be given a makeover. Just like a number of underground cables and pipes.

Which neighborhoods are we talking about?

The following streets and areas are being renovated:

-- Dr. Schaepmansingel and Dr. the Visserlaan.

-- The side streets Talmalaan, Schaeperlaan and Professor Aalberselaan.

-- The green area between Schaepmansingel / Dr. the Visserlaan and the pond.

-- The S. van Houtenlaan will be partly taken along. The paving and redecoration have been done recently.

-- The inner area of the apartment complexes is not under the redevelopment. These areas belong to Woonplus.

We made these choices thanks to an extensive participation process with the sounding board group.

Parkweg Midden - 'The Neighborhood Garden'

In the area on Van Heuven Goedhartstraat / MCM de Grootstraat (Nieuwland), contractor Van Wijnen West will build sustainable homes and apartments on behalf of Woonplus and the municipality of Schiedam. This project will continue under the name 'De Buurttuin'.

Schedule

Demolition work will start soon. After that, the contractor will start building  238 owner-occupied and (social) rental homes . The houses are for families and for households with 1 and 2 people. The public area is also being renovated.

Reconstruction of Parkweg city axis Noord

We are working on various projects along the Parkweg. Due to all the construction work, the quality of the paving of the Parkweg between Burgemeester van Haarenlaan and the Hazepad has deteriorated and needs to be replaced. The municipality wants to give this part of the Parkweg a new look.

Planning and activities

Contractor Gebr. de Leeuw BV has started to carry out the work. The work involves the redevelopment of the Parkweg, from the intersection Burgemeester van Haarenlaan - Willem Passtoorsstraat to the parking lot on the north side, near the Hazepad. And replacing the pavement.

Refurbishment Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan and Lorentzlaan

The Drie Lanen project (Boerhaavelaan, Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan and Lorentzlaan ) will continue under the name: Refurbishment Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan and Lorentzlaan. The Boerhaavelaan is ready.

Situation

The layout plan is currently being developed. When that is done, the tendering procedure for the selection of a contractor to carry out the work starts. The contractor is expected to be able to start the work after the summer. Just before the start of the work, the contractor organizes an information meeting to get acquainted. Of course not if the measures to combat the Corona virus still apply. After the birds' breeding season (March 15 - July 15, 2020), the contractor will start cutting down the trees. You will hear the exact date.

Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan between Spoorstraat and Stationsplein

A ribbon joint measurement was carried out halfway through last year. This measurement showed that there was some difference in subsidence between house numbers 151 and 198. A foundation and groundwater survey was carried out at the site of the subsidence difference. The research shows that this part of the Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan does not have the same problems as within the project area. The trees remain in this part.

Waste collection

In the new layout plan, the underground containers in the Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan will also have a new location. The new underground containers will be located at the corner of Celsiusstraat and Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan and at the corner of Stephensonstraat and Professor Kamerlingh Onneslaan.

Van Swindenstraat, Voltastraat and Ampèrestraat

The municipality of Schiedam is redesigning the outdoor space of the Van Swindenstraat, Voltastraat and Ampèrestraat, and part of the Oosterstraat.

Activities

-- Make an inventory of the quality of greenery and replace it where necessary

After these activities, large-scale activities will no longer be required in the area for twenty years.

Scientists' neighborhood

The Scientersbuurt in Schiedam is being renovated. The municipality works together with Stichting Woonplus and developer ERA Contour to tackle physical, social and economic problems. The aim is to make the Scientersbuurt a pleasant and popular neighborhood again, where residents want to live for a long time.

Quiet urban living

At the moment, starters and higher middle incomes often choose to settle outside the Scientersbuurt. The joint goal of the municipality, Stichting Woonplus and ERA Contour is to make the Scientersbuurt attractive again for this target group. The neighborhood must be given a quiet urban residential character, so that families can also live there with a pleasant feeling. In the City Vision 2030  , social improvement has therefore been mentioned as a core objective.

Planning and activities

-- Phase A and B: completed. The houses have been completed and the layout of the outdoor space is ready.

-- Phase C: the houses are under construction and will be delivered around the summer of 2020. The outdoor space will then be furnished and will be ready at the end of 2020.

-- Phase D: is ready. Construction has started. Completion at the end of 2020. The outdoor area will then be furnished.

-- Phase E: this concerns the filling in of the outdoor space between phases A, C and D. This phase will be carried out immediately after phase C.

For each phase, we look at a construction route that causes the neighborhood as little inconvenience as possible. Residents are informed per phase about the start of the work.

Together with residents

Sounding board group

During an information meeting on 12 June 2019, various residents said they would like to contribute ideas about tackling flooding in the Singelkwartier. These residents together form the sounding board group for this project. They give tips to the municipality and can also enthuse fellow residents to help tackle flooding. This group of residents is active on behalf of the entire Singelkwartier, so for the Oostsingel, Villastraat, Stephensonstraat, Wattstraat, Van Leeuwenhoek and the Oosterstraat.

What is flooding?

By flooding we mean:

-- Dirty water that has been on the street for more than half an hour;

-- Water that is in your home (including basement and crawl space);

-- Water that is in your garden for a long time.

Schieveste

The municipality is working on a new zoning plan for housing on Schieveste. Development Combination Schieveste (OCS) is developing the plans for 3000 homes. We expect to sign the agreement for the first land issue to OCS at the end of 2020.

Appropriate location

Schieveste has a favorable location in this region. The place is easy to reach by public transport: by train, metro as well as by bus and tram. The arrival of the Euroscoop Cinema and Leisure Center also makes Schieveste a great place to live.

Need additional housing

New construction on Schieveste is a solution to the demand for housing. Schiedam has to build thousands of additional homes in the coming years. This is mainly due to the increase in the population. Moreover, the composition of households is changing: there are more and more households of 1 person and of dual earners.

Appropriate housing offer

The different housing types that OCS has in mind are therefore a good addition to the current housing supply in Schiedam. The housing construction on Schieveste attracts new target groups to the city. And it offers Schiedam alternatives for current residents who want to move within the city (make a living career).

Redesign Fabribuurt, Frankelandbuurt and Liduinabuurt

The municipality of Schiedam will redesign the Fabribuurt, Frankelandbuurt and Liduinabuurt in the coming years. The paving needs to be replaced and the sewerage system needs to be adapted. We are installing a separate sewer system to drain the water better. The municipality has drawn up a layout plan together with the residents.

The layout of the Aleidastraat,  Thomas à Kempisstraat  and Van Smaleveltstraat are described below:

The preparations have been completed and the work is now really underway. The municipality of Schiedam has commissioned contractor Gebr. De Leeuw awarded through a tendering procedure.

The implementation work is expected to take six months. The contractor will carry out the work in phases. During the execution, the contractor ensures that the houses remain accessible.

The start date of the work required for the redevelopment, such as the paving and construction of the new sewerage system, is not yet known. You will hear this from the contractor. The work is scheduled to last until the end of 2020. The plants will be applied in the 2020/2021 planting season.

Aleidastraat

The municipality presented two designs to the sounding board group in May 2019. Preference was given to the design with the green central reservation and parking in the central reservation. In July 2019, the municipality updated the sounding board group and gave a presentation.

Oranjeburgh

The municipality of Schiedam is working on Oranjeburgh. This is a new neighborhood on the site of the old Vlietland hospital on Burgemeester Knappertlaan. Oranjeburgh has 62 lots (pieces of land). Of these, 36 are intended for private clients. The houses on the other lots are being realized by project developers. Such as NassauStede (the former Zusterhuis) and Residence Oranjeburgh (lot 57). These are part of the stately Oranjekwartier in the Schiedam-West district.

Residence Oranjeburgh

Schiedam-West was built between 1911 and 1940 in the Westfrankeland polder. Oranjeburgh is a great home base for enterprising families who want to combine tranquility and dynamism. Oranjeburgh is located close to the historic city center of Schiedam. The city center has a lively shopping center and plenty of terraces and restaurants. Close by you will also find several museums and the Theater aan de Schie. Taking the kids to school and then on for a game of tennis? You do it on foot or by bicycle. Because in Oranjeburgh it is relaxed living with all amenities close by.

Schedule

Construction work will start in the second half of May 2020. The work will take approximately 1.5 to 2 years (expected).

Westerkade

The work on the Westerkade has been completed on a number of remaining work. The greenery will be laid out as soon as the work of the Water Board on the culvert under the Stadhouderskade intersection has been completed.

Havendijk

The Havendijk will be redesigned to make the street more accessible and safer for traffic. Contractor Van Ooijen Gouda has started work on the Havendijk.

Contractor Van Ooijen - construction holiday

The construction holiday has started. Work on the Havendijk is temporarily halted. Contractor Van Ooijen is free until August 17, 2020. After that, two new phases will start.

Phase 2B: Havendijk between the Jachthavenlaan and the Lekstraat.

Phase 5B: Havendijk (below) between Voornsestraat and Abbenbroeksestraat.

Layout plan

A number of important points are addressed in this new design:

-- The street is undergoing major repairs

-- A two-way cycle path is being constructed

-- New crossings are being constructed

-- The maintenance of the West Frankelandsedijk up to the Willem de Zwijgerlaan intersection will be included

Existing Rotterdam Area

This project is part of the Existing Rotterdam Area (BRG) program. BRG invests in a greener and cleaner Rotterdam region. The port of Rotterdam will be expanded with Maasvlakte 2 to remain the best port in Europe. Growth of the port is only possible if people can live and work here pleasantly. That is why the Existing Rotterdam Area program invests with the surrounding area and the partners in a green and clean living environment. In this way, economic growth goes hand in hand with the quality of the Rotterdam region.

Refurbishment of the Hooikade

The Hooikade is adjacent to De Plantage city park, the oldest city park in the Netherlands. Where the immediate surroundings of the quay are visibly used and maintained with care and love, the Hooikade is a hidden and forgotten place with defects. For example, the quay construction, sewerage, paving, lighting and street furniture need to be replaced.

Think about a new design

These necessary interventions are reason to work with the closest residents of the Hooikade to redesign this historic part of the city. The intention is to preserve the seven large plane trees.

Complete the survey

From June to August 2020, the municipality of Schiedam is conducting research into the experience of the Hooikade. Close residents of the Hooikade can complete a survey online.

Projects Inner city

chiedam has a beautiful historic city center to live, shop, work and experience in a beautiful authentic environment. The city center is never finished and continues to develop. Residents, entrepreneurs, investors and the municipality work hard on this every day in their own way. Several projects are currently under development or implementation from the municipality and the responsibility for the outdoor space.

Projects in progress

-- Hoogstraat plus : Together with the street and the city, following the Lange Haven plus project, we are working on outdoor space and a program to create a street for living, working, shopping and experiencing.

-- Redesign of the Korte Haven:  The Korte Haven, Elzensteeg, Westmolenstraat and the Westvest (from the Korte Haven to the Walvisstraat) will be redesigned.

-- Edelweiss location:  The municipality of Schiedam is in talks with care entrepreneur September to develop a residential facility for people with memory problems at the Edelweiss location.

Renovation Orange Bridge

The municipality of Schiedam is going to renovate the Oranjebrug. The Oranjebrug connects Schiedam-West and Schiedam-South via the Nieuwe Haven with the Center (Oranjestraat). The bridge was built in 1938 and will soon become a municipal monument.

What will happen and why?

The bridge deck (the part of the bridge that traffic crosses) of the Oranjebrug is outdated. There will be a new bridge deck that is suitable for all traffic. We are also going to replace the lifting mechanism (the cables and the controls that raise and lower the bridge). The four lifting towers and the abutment (on which the bridge is located) will not be replaced. We will only repair minor damage.

Information meetings

In the spring of 2020 we organized a first information meeting for residents of the Oranjebrug.

Schedule

We are now calculating and designing the new parts. Then we select a contractor who will carry out the work. We expect to be able to start work in early 2021. The works must be completed before the summer of 2021.

Accessibility

During the works, no traffic can cross the bridge. We indicate this with diversion signs. This can take several days. The bridge is closed for a maximum of two weeks. After that, traffic can cross the bridge again, possibly with fewer lanes for car and bus traffic. We carry out all other activities with the bridge in use as much as possible.

Schiedam was founded in Rotterdam; around the year 1230 the river Schie was dammed by the Lord of Wassenaer and the Amtlord Dirk Bokel of the Amt Mathenesse, this to protect the existing polderland against the seawater from the North Sea. In 1247, Lady Adelaide (Aleida) of Holland married John I, Count of Hainaut. As dowry she received from him the eastern part of the dam together with the adjacent polder. The dam attracted many trade activities because goods for and from the hinterland (Delft, and further away Leiden and Haarlem) had to be transhipped. A small town developed swiftly around the dam and its activities. In the year 1275 Schiedam received city rights from Lady Adelaide, this in her capacity as sister of William II, the reigning Count of Holland and becoming King of the Romans. She ordered the building of a castle near the Schie, which is known till today as the "Castle Mathenesse" (Dutch: "Huis te Riviere" or "Slot Mathenesse"). Remnants of a donjon, which were once part of the castle, are still visible today in the centre of Schiedam and near the city office.

As a young settlement Schiedam soon got competition from surrounding towns and cities: in 1340, Rotterdam and Delft also were allowed to establish a connection between the Schie and the Meuse. From the 15th century on the city flourished as a place of pilgrimage on the devotion around Saint Lidwina, one of the most famous Dutch saints who lived her life in Schiedam. The city gained subsequently significance by fishing for herring. In 1428 a great city fire swept through Schiedam, thereby destroying large parts of the then wooden city .

The 18th century was Schiedam's Golden Age, when the gin industry flourished. The standstill drink imports from France made the emergence of the Schiedamse distillery possible. From dozens of distilleries Schiedam jenever was exported throughout the world. The gin industry gave the city its nickname 'Black Nazareth'. This industry is now largely gone. Five windmills in the town, called De Noord, Walvisch, Drie Koornbloemen, Nieuwe Palmboom and Vrijheid − are the highest traditional style windmills in the world because they had to stick out above the high warehouses, and many storehouses are relics of this past. In one of the former factories at the Lange Haven the National Jenever Museum is established.

On 10 August 1856 the first major train accident in the Netherlands happened near the Schiedam railway station, causing 3 deaths. On 4 May 1976 the Schiedam train disaster also took place near the station which caused 24 deaths.

At the end of the 19th and throughout the 20th century, the shipbuilding industry was booming in Schiedam, with the existence of large companies like Wilton-Fijenoord and others. In 1941, the ancient municipalities Kethel en Spaland were merged with Schiedam which made large expansions of the city possible with residential areas in the north. At the end of the 20th century the shipbuilding industry largely disappeared and nowadays Schiedam is mainly a commuter town being part of the Rotterdam metropolitan area.

Sport

The most popular sports in Schiedam are soccer and field hockey. The town used to have a professional soccer team named svv (Schiedamse voetbal vereniging), but after financial problems the club was declared bankrupt. Cricket is more popular in Schiedam than in most other Dutch cities.
