Dordrecht is a city and municipality in the Western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It is the fifth-largest city of the province after Rotterdam, The Hague, Zoetermeer and Leiden, with a population of 118,654. The municipality covers the entire Dordrecht Island, also often called Het Eiland van Dordt ("the Island of Dordt"), bordered by the rivers Oude Maas, Beneden Merwede, Nieuwe Merwede, Hollands Diep, and Dordtsche Kil. Dordrecht is the largest and most important city in the Drechtsteden and is also part of the Randstad, the main conurbation in the Netherlands. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland and has a rich history and culture.

二、自然地理

Etymology

The name Dordrecht comes from Thuredriht (circa 1120), Thuredrecht (circa 1200). The name seems to mean 'thoroughfare'; a ship-canal or -river through which ships were pulled by rope from one river to another, as here from the Dubbel to the Merwede, or vice versa. Earlier etymologists had assumed that the 'drecht' suffix came from Latin 'trajectum', a ford, but this was rejected in 1996. The Drecht is now supposed to have been derived from 'draeg', which means to pull, tow or drag. Inhabitants of Dordrecht are Dordtenaren (singular: Dordtenaar). Dordrecht is informally called Dordt by its inhabitants. In earlier centuries, Dordrecht was a major trade port, well known to British merchants, and was called Dort in English.

Demography

In 2008, around 17% of the population of Dordrecht was of non-Western origin. Between 2005 and 2008, this number has not changed. The allochthonous population consists for a large part of young people while the indigenous population has started to age very quickly. Over six thousand Turks live in Dordrecht, many of whom are originally from Kayapinar.

According to the Social Geographical Office of Dordrecht, the population consisted of the following ethnic groups in 2005 and 2008

三、经济发展和规模

The current economy of Dordrecht is based on ship building, wood industry, and steel industry. The city has the sixth largest sea port in the Netherlands. One of the largest employers on Dordrecht Island is DuPont de Nemours (Nederland) B.V. It has 9 factories here with a workforce of 900 people.

In development are the "Learning" and "Health" Business Parks. The Learning Park is intended to have 60,000 m2 (645,834.63 sq ft) of space for educational institutions. In the Health Park, a wide range of health services will be located, with the Dordwijk Campus of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital as focal point. Other services include a blood bank, pharmacy, and mental health clinic.

Near the Health Park a new Sport Park will be built. A new large sport centre, the equivalent size of 3 soccer fields, is planned complete with gyms, skating rink, and a pool. Next to this Sport Park, a huge outdoor event terrain will be established.

Shopping

Shopping in the centre of Dordrecht is centred around the Voorstraat, the Sarisgang and the Statenplein (Staten square). The Voorstraat is 1,200 metres (1,300 yd) long, making it the longest shopping street in the Netherlands. Markets are held every Friday and Saturday on the Statenplein and in the Sarisgang and on Tuesday in Dubbeldam.

四、产业特点/重点项目

Projects

1, Engelenburgerbrug

The Engelenburgerbrug is in bad condition and the entire monumental bridge is being repaired or renewed. The fixed part, the valve and the movement and operating work are in need of renovation.

Schedule

Work on the temporary bridge started in January 2020. The renovation work on the Engelenburger Bridge will take at least a year, with the risk of delays and delay of the work. You may also experience inconvenience and reduced accessibility.

Monitoring

4RISK BV from Waddinxveen carries out monitoring work before and during the replacement and renovation of the Engelenburger Bridge. They also monitor the quay construction and the temporary bridge. In addition to architectural recordings, vibration measurements, deformation measurements and groundwater monitoring are carried out to prevent damage to the environment.

Redirects

In addition to the temporary bridge, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians can also use a diversion route. The diversion is over the Roobrug to the Nieuwe Werck. Pedestrians can also use the Long Iron Bridge.

 4.png

2, Gorterstraat

The project to repav the Gorter- and De Merodestraat and to replace the sewage system has been postponed.

The municipality plans to re-pave the Gorterstraat and De Mérodestraat in Dubbeldam. There will also be new sewerage. The project is currently postponed. You can contact project coordinator JJ Beije by e-mail: jj.beije@dordrecht.nl or telephone number (078) 770 46 22 about this.

What's the plan?

We are replacing the current sewage system.

There will be a temporary paving at the place where the sewage system is replaced.

The quality of the pavement is poor; after a year there will be new paving for the entire street.

Where possible, the roadway will be slightly widened by making a sidewalk fall.

In principle, we leave public lighting on. It will only be moved if this is necessary due to the other layout.

 5.png

Conditions

A number of conditions are attached to the project (the points for attention, wishes and ideas). These are:

The available budget for the construction.

The costs for management and maintenance must not increase due to the new design.

The new construction must meet various safety and traffic requirements.

The sewerage works must be carried out in 2018/2019.

The final construction of the new paving will take place in 2019/2020.

3, Houthavenplein

In the autumn of 2019, the municipality will replace parts of the sewer system on Houthavenplein, Noorderstraat, Molen de Vilder and part of Lijnbaandwarsstraat. We will redesign the street in 2020.

The sewer consists of two parts: a waste water sewer and a rainwater sewer. We are completely renewing the wastewater sewer. We will partly replace the rainwater sewer. After the work, the sewer can last for another 60 years.

In the drawing below you can see which parts of the streets actually replace the sewer system.

Redecoration

In 2020 we will redesign the street. The starting point is that there will be more greenery. The climate is changing. We have more to do with long dry spells and short, heavy showers. By planting more greenery instead of paving, we ensure that the environment is better prepared for the changing climate. Water does not flow directly to the sewer, but is absorbed into the soil.

A preliminary design has been made for the redesign:

4, Short Kalkhaven

The quay walls of the Korte Kalkhaven and the Keizershof are due for renovation. That is a major job that will take some time. The paving is also being redone.

Quay repair Korte Kalkhaven and Keizershof

The re-laying of the paving and the replacement of the quay walls concerns the following streets:

Kleine Kalkstraat

Great Kalkstraat

Keizershof

Korte Kalkhaven (until the intersection Binnen Kalkhaven)

Within Kalkhaven (part between Korte Kalkhaven and Bomkade)

Quay walls

The work on the quay walls is quite drastic. It entails risks for the (monumental) and unmanaged buildings. Great care is taken to avoid problems. The animation shows how the work is performed.

The company 4Risk carries out preliminary inspections on our behalf in buildings at risk. So-called 'measuring bolts' are also installed on the facade to keep an eye on possible movements in the buildings.

Information evening local residents

We collected questions from local residents on 25 June 2019. The questions and answers have been incorporated into a memorandum of views . This was sent to the residents who were present on June 25.

There will be a second meeting for local residents on 12 December. These have been invited by letter . During that meeting, the following will be discussed:

Work on quay walls

Technical aspect work

Preliminary design of streets

App with information by contractor

Schedule

Prototype

The Preliminary Design of the streets is known. Residents can respond (in writing) to the plans until 11 July.

Schedule

In June we will start tackling the quay wall. This will last until October 15, 2020. In 2021 we will start with the paving of the aforementioned streets. Unfortunately, the work cannot be done at the same time. This is because the water board is not allowed to work during the closed season of the flood defense. The outdoor space is therefore planned from April to October 2021. No contractor has yet been selected for this.

App

During the work, contractor De Vries keeps the area informed via the Korte Kalkhaven app. This is easy to download in the Playstore or via the Appstore.

5, Nicolaasstraat: redesign of the square

The square on Nicolaasstraat will be redesigned. There is now a lot of pavement and little green. The intention is to improve the outdoor space with more greenery. A design has been made for this.

A first design  (pdf, 849 kB) has been made for the new layout of the square .

 8.png

Design

In the design, there will be less paving (stone) and more greenery. The existing trees remain for the most part. We place a few benches on the square. In this way the square becomes a green place to meet each other or to read a book in peace.

Climate measures

The new greenery consists of a mix of low and higher planting. The planting prevents extreme heat on extremely hot days. Because there is more shade, the surface heats up less quickly. The heat is not released at night. As a result, the nights are cooler in extremely hot weather. The day also starts and runs cooler. More green also ensures different types of plants and animals (biodiversity) in the city. In short: a green environment is a pleasant and livable environment.

Improvement square

The layout of the square at the moment presents a few problems. The layout of the parking spaces is not practical. There are loose stones on the stacking wall. The trees with thorns are a nuisance and the room for maneuver is limited.

We tackle the problems in the new situation. We will build the parking lot with the 'round' sections straight. The new compartments are wider so that there is more space to park and get in and out. As a result, there will soon be 2 parking spaces less.

We remove the pile wall. The trees with green spines remain. Trees with spines in the pavement will be removed. (Young) children have room to play on the square. The older children can play in the playground at the Schampershof.

Maintenance green

During the residents' evening on May 28, 2019, various residents indicated that more greenery is a good addition. Residents noted that the greenery must be well maintained. The municipal green supervisor ensures that the greenery is not neglected. You can easily report reports about public space via www.fixi.nl.

Comment

You can comment on the design before it is finalized. Send us your response by e-mail before 31 May 2020 . With the final design we investigate whether the plan is financially feasible. If so, we will start with the new layout of the square this year.

Do you have questions? Please contact the project coordinator of the municipality, Mr A. Plaisier on telephone number (078) 770 4626 or by e-mail .

6, Reigerstraat-Aalscholverstraat

We are going to replace the sewer system near the Reigerstraat-Aalscholverstraat. The old sewer is in bad shape.

What will happen?

We will replace the old sewer pipes with two new sewers. There will be one sewer pipe for the discharge of dirty water from your home (kitchen, bathroom and toilet). In addition, there will be one sewer pipe for rainwater.

The sewer pipes are in the road. Therefore it is necessary that we remove all pavers. When the new sewer is in place, we will temporarily close the street and the parking spaces. This way the soil can settle well. This post-bagging takes about a year. Then we reinstall the entire street and at the correct height.

Redecoration

It is expected that we can start repaving in early 2021. The local residents are invited to a meeting. During this meeting we will show what the new paving will look like.

Nuisance

Unfortunately, replacing the sewer creates mess, inconvenience and inconvenience. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent that. We hope for your understanding.

Accessibility homes

All homes remain accessible on foot. Cars can be parked elsewhere in the neighborhood during the refurbishment.

Household waste

If necessary, there will be a temporary solution for the disposal of household waste. HVC or the contractor will inform local residents of this.

Phases

The replacement of the sewer is done in stages. Phases 1 to 15 are ready. Phases 16 and 17 are now next and phases 18 and 19 follow. The order of the phases or the time that the contractor is busy may change. Below you can read when it is your street's turn and how long the work will take. The contractor will send local residents a letter about this in advance.

 9.png

Schedule

The sewerage works will be ready in November 2020.

Questions about implementation

Verheij Infra bv from Sliedrecht is carrying out the replacement of the sewer system. Do you have questions about the implementation or planning? You can walk into the school on the corner of Reigerstraat-Aalscholverstraat every Tuesday afternoon between 1:00 and 3:00 pm.

General questions or information

Do you have any questions or comments? Then you can contact the project coordinator of the municipality, Ms M. Noorlander. She can be reached on 078 770 4624 or by e-mail .

7, Parking Oudelandshoek

At the end of 2018, the city council passed a motion by Beter voor Dordt. It contained the request to construct additional parking spaces in Oudelandshoek.

In order to be able to implement the motion, we have divided the Oudelandshoek district into five areas. A start has been made with the streets Iroko and Marowijne and the associated part of the Chico Mendesring, because residents there have been experiencing parking problems for some time.

On a walk-in evening in July 2019, a number of residents indicated that they wanted to participate in a working group. In the second half of 2019, this working group made a proposal as to where additional parking spaces could be built in this area. We presented these ideas to all residents of this area during a residents' evening on January 16, 2020.

Planning 2020 and 2021

In 2020, we will use the working method of a working group of residents to create extra parking spaces for two areas in Oudelandshoek, insofar as the Corona measures allow. The following areas are expected to be next in 2021. The second area consists of Azobe / Balsa and Makore streets and part of the Chico Mendesring.

Iroko / Marowijne / Chico Mendesring

During the walk-in evening on January 16, 2020, almost fifty responses to the proposals of the working group were received. After treatment of all reactions, 6 locations were ultimately left. The meeting with the weht parent has been delayed due to the corona measures.

The working group spoke with alderman Van der Linden on 9 July. Ultimately, there are 5 locations left with a mix of measures. There will be extra parking spaces, but unsafe parking spaces will also be removed. In addition, we are taking measures to combat illegal parking. Ultimately, 4 extra parking spaces will be added.

Locations

The following measures take place at the 5 locations. These locations are also shown on the drawing with proposed parking measures.

1, Location A: at Marowijne 40, 131, 155 and 174 there will be green spaces to prevent illegal parking.

2, Location C: at Marowijne 115-119 we adapt the paving with red tiles. To combat illegal parking. And to improve the safety of cyclists.

3, Location F: there will be 2 parking spaces on the Chico Mendesring at Marowijne 169.

4, Location G: at Iroko 176-177 and 183-184 we are removing 2 existing parking spaces to improve road safety.

5, Location I: we are building 4 parking spaces at Iroko 159-165.

Large vehicles

Large, parked buses provide part of the increased parking pressure. It concerns buses that are longer than 6 meters and / or higher than 2.4 meters. The municipality is investigating whether these large buses can be placed at the Johan Friso School, near the Wellant College.

Appeal and enforcement

The working group believes that more should be done in addition to the above measures. The municipality has the task of having enforcers check more often. The working group also invites residents to address each other in a proper manner.

Performance

The work will be carried out after the construction holiday, mid-September or as much earlier as possible.

Azobe / Balsa / Makore / Ch Mendesring

A first walk-in evening took place on 20 February. About twelve people signed up for the working group for this area. Due to the Corona measures, the Azobé / Balsa / Makoré working group could only meet for the first time on 14 July. During this first meeting, the participants got to know each other and the representatives of the municipality.

Several residents said that they see the parking pressure growing in the neighborhood, but do not experience any nuisance themselves. Furthermore, the municipality sets conditions within which the measures are elaborated. These conditions have been adapted to the experiences of the first working group (Iroko / Marowijne / Chico Mendesring). The summer period is used to view the neighborhood and to develop proposals for solutions. The working group will meet again on Tuesday 15 September. Then the proposals are discussed with the municipality.

Call

Most members of the working group live on the Balsa. Unfortunately there are no representatives of the Azobé or Makore. The working group cordially invites residents of these 2 streets to participate. Are you interested? Call William Jacobs, district manager Stadspolders on (078) 770 70 64

8, Stratosphere Street

The sewerage system in Stratosfeerstraat needs to be replaced. We will then renew the roadway, sidewalks and parking spaces.

We determine together with the residents what the new interior will look like. We also include as many measures as possible against the consequences of the changing climate.

Sewage works

We remove the old sewer. This 1970 sewer is a mixed sewer. The aerial photo shows how the sewer runs (click on the photo for a larger version). The dirty water and the clean (rain) water go together in a sewer pipe to the water purification system. The new sewer is a separate sewer with 2 pipes. A tube with dirty water and a separate tube with clean water.

The dirty water goes to the water purification. The pipe with clean (rain) water ends up in ditches, ponds or 'buffers'. These ensure a delayed drainage of water. This way, the clean water is not unnecessarily polluted. And there is no unnecessary burden for the wastewater sewer and water treatment. For example during heavy rain showers.

Temporary roadway

After replacing the sewer, we will temporarily close the road again with clinkers. The substrate must then be able to settle well for about a year. This prevents later subsidence in the new paving.

Thinking about the new design

When the sewer system in Stratosfeerstraat has been replaced, we will renew the layout of the street. We would like to hear from you what the new street should look like. Due to the coronavisus it was not possible to hold an information meeting. That is why we asked residents to think along via a video call this spring.

The first design see PDF Drodrecht 1

Residents meeting on September 22, 2020

There will be a walk-in meeting for residents in Stratosfeerstraat in a tent on 22 September 2020 from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. We take into account the guidelines that then apply from the RIVM. You can then ask questions and share your wishes for the next sketch design of the new interior. Subjects that we would like to discuss are, for example: the layout of the playground, trees, thresholds, parking spaces and measures to take climate change into account.

Sketch designs

The sketch design is not yet a final design and is not yet complete. It is a first step to further supplement with you. The difference with the current situation is that the road has been made slightly narrower, green strips have been added and parking spaces have been added. This is not final yet. After each meeting we make a subsequent design until there is a final design.

Ask?

Do you have any questions? You can call him on telephone number: (078) 770 50 31

9, Van Eesterenplein - Bieshof Shopping Center

The paving on the Van Eesterenplein is due for replacement. This offers the opportunity to also adjust the layout of the square where necessary.

Local residents were able to respond to the design of Van Eesterenplein during the last walk-in meeting on 2 July 2019.

Location

 10.png

Final design

The final design has recently been established. The most important changes compared to the preliminary design are the water element and the terrace.

Water element

A water feature was planned in the forecourt. A trampoline will be used here as a playground. Due to the low construction depth, the trampoline is only suitable for young children.

Terrace

We are adapting the Westplein to the new catering industry that has come into the shopping center.

 Schedule

The implementation was scheduled for 2021. Contractors from the region have asked the municipality whether projects can be accelerated. After consultation with the shopkeepers association, it is possible to bring forward the plans for the Van Eesterenplein. The work will therefore start in September 2020. The work is expected to be completed in May 2021. The activities go into a number of phases:

1, East side under awning

2, Forecourt

3, East side other

4, West side street

5, West side square

6, Backside and intermediate streets

The tendering procedure has started. Once a contractor is known, local residents and retailers will receive information about the final stages, planning and accessibility of streets in and around the shopping center.

Information

Questions can be sent by e-mail to project manager Annet ter Huurne or via telephone number 14 078. Between 3 and 25 August you can contact Nathalia Landman by e-mail

10, Viottakade (east side)

The eastern part of the Viottakade is due for replacement. We are going to renew the foundation and the asphalt of the roadway and the bicycle lane. We are also renewing the adjacent footpaths.

There will also be entrances and exits at the end of the side streets with a connection to the Viottakade. The work is planned after the summer holiday of 2020.

What do we do?

The interior remains the same for the most part. We do make a few improvements.

Road and bicycle lane

The new bicycle lane will be slightly wider, the new road will be slightly narrower.

Footpaths

The footpath on the side of the pond narrows slightly. This gives the trees a little more space. The footpath on the side of the houses remains just as wide. Only in the new situation will it run continuously. Entrances and exits are made at the side streets.

Entrances and exits

Due to the construction of access and exit ramps, the footpath will soon continue in one piece. Pedestrians have the right of way and cars slow down slightly due to the entrances and exits. We also make the difference between a 30 and a 50 km / h road clearer and safer.

Speed bumps

We replace the thresholds (drops) that are there now by long (sine) thresholds. We will take these into account in the asphalting process and will cover the total width of the road. As a result, the posts next to the drops are no longer necessary. The bicycle lane therefore remains the same width everywhere. This makes the bicycle lane more accessible for the spreader or snow plow.

Drawing

Here you can download a drawing with more details of the new layout  (501 kB).

PDF: Presentatietekening Viottakade_2020-05-07

Heights

When creating a new public space, the municipality often has to raise the roads and footpaths again. There may be a height difference in a few houses. This applies to the houses with their garden adjacent to the new layout.

As residents you are responsible for raising your garden. And the possible adaptation of garden fences or other possessions. Where possible, we ask the contractor to connect the first meter of paving of the garden. So that it reaches the new height of the footpath.

Accessibility

During work, we close the road and bicycle lane of the Viottakade. We will set up a diversion route for through traffic. We indicate the diversion route with signs.

We carry out the work in stages. We do this to keep the inconvenience to neighbors as little as possible. If necessary, we also take extra measures. This allows us to keep the accessibility and traffic flow in the surrounding streets as good as possible.

Schedule

The work is scheduled between September and November 2020. The exact start date is not yet known. We will inform you about this later. If there are no special circumstances, the work will take approximately 6 weeks.

11, Wielhovenstraat

Wielhovenstraat will be given new paving.

In 2019, we installed a new drainage pipe in Wielhovenstraat. We have also adapted sewerage, gas and water. After that work, we temporarily repaved the road. In this way the surface in the trench could collapse (settle) properly. Now we can lay the final pavement.

Design

The drawing (See attachment: Tekening%20Wielhovenstraat.pdf) shows what Wielhovenstraat will look like. Do you have questions about the design? Please contact Mr. A. Plaisier

Activities

The work will take place from Achthoevenstraat to the intersection at Wielhovenstraat 49.

Schedule

We expect the work to start on August 31, 2020. The work takes about 8 to 10 weeks.

Phases

The contractor carries out the work in phases. As a result, the inconvenience for the residents of Wielhovenstraat is limited.

Parking

During work on the road, you cannot always park the car in front of the door. The houses remain accessible on foot with bulkheads.

Household waste

The household waste containers cannot always be in the usual places during the work. The contractor will inform you about this.

Contractor

During work on the road, contractor Jos de Graaf BV informs the residents of Wielhovenstraat. Before the start of the work, the contractor will send you a letter. This letter contains information about the stages of the work and the contact details of the contractor.

12, Thorbeckeweg

In May and June 2020, the municipality will have the sewerage system replaced in Thorbeckeweg. This concerns the part between Talmaweg and Loudonstraat. The current sewer is due for replacement.

What will happen?

The current sewer is located on both sides of the Thorbeckeweg (under the parking spaces and sidewalks). We are supposed to remove the old sewer. If that does not work, for example because trees or pipes are in the way, then we leave it. In this case, we close the old sewer at these places by filling it up. We install the new sewer under the roadway. Before placing the new sewer, it is necessary to remove the current asphalt, the parking spaces and the sidewalks. After construction of the new sewer and removal or filling of the old one, we close the street with bricks. This is temporary because the ground and street have to settle well first. Post-bagging takes about a year. Then we will construct the area definitively. We will inform the residents again prior to this.

Nuisance

The activities can cause some inconvenience. we do everything we can to limit this as much as possible. We hope for your cooperation and understanding.

Accessibility homes

The houses will remain accessible on foot during the work. You have to park your car elsewhere in the area. Residents of surrounding parks can leave the park with their car via the second exit. We will keep the aan der Duyn van Maasdamplantsoen (only one exit) accessible during the work.

Detour

We indicate a diversion route for visitors from the other neighborhoods and those of the Crabbehof shopping center. You can also find the diversion at www.dordrecht.nl/Wegafsluiting

Household waste

During the work you can continue to offer your waste in the usual way (according to the waste guide). HVC and the contractor have contact with each other about the times when HVC is temporarily unable to reach the containers or places of supply. In this case, they make temporary arrangements and the residents are informed about this.

Schedule

Water company Evides replaced an old pipeline at the Talmaweg / Thorbeckeweg intersection between 6 and 9 April. Work on the sewerage system is scheduled to start on April 14, 2020.

Due to the tightening of the measures concerning the Corona virus, the tendering for the sewerage works has been delayed. Work is now scheduled to start around May 7, 2020.

Work in phases

The work will be carried out in phases between April 6 and June 26 (estimate). The length of the broken paving is approximately 80 meters long per phase. This is to reduce the nuisance and to guarantee sufficient accessibility for emergency services. Despite the later start date, we try to keep the end date the same. About a year later, in the middle of 2021, we will finally construct the street.

13, Help build our new Green Management Plan

In Dordrecht, we want an outdoor space that is beautiful, that the residents can use well and that offers space for nature. We lay down how we arrange all this in a green management plan. Contrary to what the name suggests, it's not just about the green. It is also about the management of surface water. We are ready for a new, contemporary green management plan.

The green management plan describes how we deal with all plantings, grasses, trees and waters in the public space. The current plan dates from the 1990s. Time for a new green management plan in which we incorporate current insights. We conducted a survey to find out everyone's opinions and suggestions. It's great that so many people participated. No fewer than 661 people completed the questionnaire.

Heart for green

Greenery and water are at the heart of our inhabitants. We notice this in the reactions and sounds we hear from the city. And we are happy about that. Because we love green (and blue). Now residents can differ from one another about what they want the outdoor space to look like. Some want a short-trimmed green hem because it looks neat and tidy. And it is clear and traffic safe. The other wants more natural strips, because this is good for a varied plant and animal life.

We know that both sounds - and everything in between - live among our inhabitants. There are also differences between one neighborhood and another. We want to do justice to all sounds as much as possible.

Next steps

We discuss the results of the survey with the residents and organizations that have registered for the video meetings. We process the information from the survey, the digital residents' meeting and the meeting with green specialists and nature organizations into a report. We will process the results after the summer in the draft green management plan.

As we have already written, our aim is to do justice to everyone's input as much as possible. What we also have to take into account are Dutch laws and regulations, municipal policy and the available budget. And we keep an eye on the interests of nature on our Eiland van Dordrecht.

14, Reggestraat

We want to keep the city and neighborhoods easily accessible. That is why we are working on the roads. There are also activities in the Reggestraat, Beekmanstraat and Giessenstraat.

We are replacing the pavement. Work will start in the week of September 7, 2020. You can read more about the project below.

What will happen?

In Reggestraat, Beemanstraat and Giessenstraat, we are adapting the paving in such a way that residents can park their car (s) properly. There will also be plants. The drawing  shows how the street will be arranged.

Nuisance

During the work, any (parking) nuisance cannot be avoided. After all, there is less parking available. In order to be able to perform the work properly and successfully, it is important that the contractor is not hindered by parked cars. You can park anywhere at the weekend. The work is 'released' on Friday after 4 p.m. Then you can park closer to your home.

PLEASE NOTE: After the weekend, everything will be closed again on Monday from 7 a.m. If your car is still behind the new work area, you can NOT use your car until Friday 4 pm.

Household waste

Dispose of your household waste at places where the garbage truck can easily reach. The contractor will place an information board on the temporary offer places.

Contractor

The work will be carried out by Jos van der Graaf bv from Dordrecht, who will carry out the work. Do you have any questions during the performance? Please contact: Mr. B. Kloot of Jos van der Graaf BV, tel. 06- 46130888.

Schedule

The work will start on September 7, 2020. The work must be completed in the week of February 8 to 12, 2021. The planning drawing (Planningstekening Reggestraat en omgeving.pdf ) shows when the contractor is at work at which location.

Places of interest

Because of its long and important role in Dutch history, Dordrecht has a rich culture. The medieval city centre is home to over 950 monuments. The city also houses 7 historic churches and 6 museums in a relatively small area and hosts many festivals and events every year.

The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Kerk ('Our Dear Lady Church') or simply the Grote Kerk ('Big Church') was built between 1285 and 1470. The 65-meter tower contains a carillon with 67 bells including one weighing 9830 kilos, making it the heaviest bell in the Netherlands.

The Augustijnenkerk ('Church of the Augustins') was built around 1293 and is currently owned by the Dutch Reformed Church. The church includes the Augustinian Monastery het Hof ('the Court') which was built in 1275 and was the location of the First Assembly of the Free States.

The Nieuwkerk ('New Church') or St Nicolaas Kerk was built in 1175 and is, ironically considering its name, the oldest building in Dordrecht.

The Munt van Holland ('Mint of Holland'), mint built in 1366. The majority of the coins used in the region of Holland in the Middle Ages were struck here. Nowadays, the building houses a music school.

Kyck over den Dyck ('View over the Dike'), the last windmill in Dordrecht. It was built in 1612 and used to produce malt that was used by Dordts beer brewers.

The Groothoofdspoort ('Big Head's Gate') is the original city gate of Dordrecht, built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is situated at the point where the rivers the Meuse, the Merwede, and the Rhine meet.

Arend Maartenshof (Arend Maarten's Court), built in 1625.

六、历史文化

Early history

The city was formed along the Thure river, in the midst of peat swamps. This river was a branch of the river Dubbel, which is part of the massive Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta complex, near the current Bagijnhof. Around 1120 reference to Dordrecht was made by a remark that count Dirk IV of Holland was murdered in 1049 near "Thuredrech".

Dordrecht was granted city rights by William I, Count of Holland, in 1220, making it the oldest city in the present province of South Holland. In fact, Geertruidenberg was the first city in the historical county of Holland to receive city rights, but this municipality currently is part of the province of Noord-Brabant.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, Dordrecht developed into an important market city because of its strategic location. It traded primarily in wine, wood and cereals. Dordrecht was made even more important when it was given staple right in 1299.

In 1253 a Latin school was founded in Dordrecht. It still exists today as the Johan de Witt Gymnasium and is the oldest gymnasium in the Netherlands. From 1600 to 1615 Gerhard Johann Vossius was rector at this school.

On 18–19 November 1421, the Saint Elisabeth's flood flooded large parts of southern Holland, causing Dordrecht to become an island. It was commonly said that over 10,000 people died in the flood, but recent research indicates that it was probably less than 200 people.

Union of Dordrecht

In 1572, four years into the Dutch Revolt, representatives of all the cities of Holland, with the exception of Amsterdam, as well as the Watergeuzen, represented by William II de la Marck, gathered in Dordrecht to hold the Eerste Vrije Statenvergadering ("First Assembly of the Free States"), also known as the Unie van Dordrecht ("Union of Dordrecht"). This secret meeting, called by the city of Dordrecht, was a rebellious act since only King Philip II or his stadtholder, at that time the Duke of Alva, were allowed to call a meeting of the States of Holland.

During the meeting, the organization and financing of the rebellion against the Spanish occupation was discussed, Phillip II was unanimously denounced, and William of Orange was chosen as the rightful stadtholder and recognized as the official leader of the revolt. Orange, represented at the meeting by his assistant Philips of Marnix, was promised financial support of his struggle against the Spanish and at his own request, freedom of religion was declared in all of Holland.

The gathering is regarded as the first important step towards the free and independent Dutch Republic. Other important gatherings such as the Union of Brussels (1577) and the Union of Utrecht (1579) paved the way for official independence of the Dutch Republic, declared in the Act of Abjuration in 1581.

The Union of Dordrecht was held in an Augustinian monastery, nowadays simply called het Hof ("the Court"). The room in which the meeting was held is called de Statenzaal ("The Hall of States") and features a stained glass window in which the coats of arms of the twelve cities that were present at the meeting can be seen.

Synod of Dordrecht

From November 13, 1618 to May 9, 1619, an important Dutch Reformed Church assembly took place in Dordrecht, referred to as the Synod of Dordrecht. The synod attempted, and succeeded, to settle the theological differences of opinion between the central tenets of Calvinism, and a new school of thought within the Dutch Reformed Church known as Arminianism, named for its spiritual leader Jacobus Arminius. Arminius' followers were also commonly known as Remonstrants, after the 1610 Five Articles of Remonstrance which outlined their points of dissent from the church's official doctrine. They were opposed by the Contra-Remonstrants, or the Gomarists, who were led by Dutch theologian Franciscus Gomarus.

During the Twelve Years' Truce, this in essence purely theological conflict between different factions of the church had in practice spilled over into politics, dividing society along ideological lines, and threatening the existence of the young republic by repeatedly bringing it to the brink of civil war.

The synod was attended by Gomarist Dutch delegates and also by delegates from Reformed churches in Germany, Switzerland, and England. Though it was originally intended that the synod would bring agreement on the doctrine of predestination among all the Reformed churches, in practice this Dutch synod was mainly concerned with problems facing the Dutch Reformed Church.

The opening sessions dealt with a new Dutch translation of the Bible, a catechism, and the censorship of books. The synod then called upon representatives of the Remonstrants to express their beliefs. The Remonstrants refused to accept the rules established by the synod and eventually were expelled from the church.

The synod then studied the theology of the Remonstrants and declared that it was contrary to Scripture. The Canons of Dort were produced; they discussed in detail in five sections the errors of the Remonstrants that were rejected as well as the doctrines that were affirmed. The doctrines affirmed were that predestination is not conditional on belief; that Christ did not die for all; the total depravity of man; the irresistible grace of God; and the impossibility of falling from grace. These canons of Dort, along with the Belgic Confession and the Heidelberg Catechism, remain the theological basis of the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands.

Following the synod, two hundred Remonstrant ministers were deposed from their office, of which eighty were banished. The political leaders of the Remonstrant movement were arrested and one of them beheaded on May 14, 1619. It was only after the death of Prince Maurice in 1625 that the persecution of the Remonstrants ceased.

The Patriots movement

From 1780 to 1787, Dordrecht was home to the Patriots faction which intended to remove the hereditary Stadtholder position held by the House of Orange-Nassau. The Netherlands was after all a republic de jure. Soon after, more cities followed and William V fled from Holland. But his brother-in-law, King Frederick William II of Prussia, came to the aid of William V and on 18 September 1787, Dordrecht capitulated to Prussian troops. The Patriots were defeated and Willem V was restored in his position as Stadtholder.

Modern history

In the 18th century, the importance of Dordrecht began to wane, and Rotterdam became the main city in the region. Yet throughout the centuries, Dordrecht held a key position in the defense of Holland. It hosted an army division well into the 20th century. During the mobilization of August 1939, infantry and artillery were sent to Dordrecht to defend the island. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands on the 10th of May 1940 German paratroopers landed in Dordrecht. After fierce fighting they overtook the bridges Dordrecht-Moerdijk and Dordrecht-Zwijndrecht. Many buildings in Dordrecht were destroyed.

At the end of the Second World War, during the winter of 1944–45, Dordrecht and its surroundings were in the middle between the opposing armies. The border between occupied and liberated regions ran along the Hollands Diep. Dordrecht was finally liberated by the Canadian Army.

In 1970, the municipality Dubbeldam (then ca. 10,000 inhabitants) and the southern part of the municipality of Sliedrecht were incorporated into Dordrecht, making Dordrecht Island one municipality.

Folklore

During Carnaval, Dordrecht is called Ooi- en Ramsgat (Ewe's and Ram's hole), and its inhabitants are Schapenkoppen (Sheepheads). This name originates from an old folk story. Import of meat or cattle was taxed in the 17th century. To avoid having to pay, two men dressed up a sheep they had bought outside the city walls, attempting to disguise it as a man. The sheep was discovered because it bleated as the three men (two men and one sheep) passed through the city wall gate. There is a special monument of a man and his son trying to hold a sheep disguised as a man between them, that refers to this legend. The logo of Dordrecht's professional football club FC Dordrecht includes the head of a ram and its supporters are known to sing Wij zijn de Dordtse schapenkoppen (we are the Dordtse sheep heads) during matches. There is also a cookie called Schapenkop (sheep head) which is a speciality of Dordrecht.

There are many more legends about Dordrecht. One of them is about Saint Sura, a young woman who planned on building an entire church with only three coins in her purse. She was murdered because of her supposed wealth.

Another legend is about the house called de Onbeschaamde (the Unembarrassed). It is about the three brothers Van Beveren who each wanted to build a house and decided to make a bet on who would dare to place the most risqué statue on their façade. One of the brothers, Abraham van Beveren, placed a naked little boy on his façade. However, the house that supposedly won has an empty façade today because, according to the story, the statue was so risqué that it was removed.

A well known saying about Dordrecht is Hoe dichter bij Dordt, hoe rotter het wordt (the closer to Dordrecht, the more rotten it gets). The previous mayor Noorland added to that; maar ben je er eenmaal in, dan heb je het prima naar je zin (but once you're in it, you're perfectly content). The saying can probably be explained as follows; traffic used to go by water and whoever came close to Dordrecht was obliged, according to staple right, to display their merchandise for a couple of days before being allowed to sail on. This caused loss of time and caused products to become rotten. Another explanation is derived from Bommel is rommel, bij Tiel is niet viel en hoe dichter bij Dordt hoe rotter het wordt which is supposed to be said by farmers describing the bad quality of the land close to the rivers Maas and Waal, only suitable for harvesting reed.

Nature

The Sliedrechtse Biesbosch, east of Dordrecht, and the Dordtse Biesbosch, south of Dordrecht, together form the Hollandse Biesbosch which is a part of the national park the Biesbosch, one of the largest national parks in the Netherlands and one of the last freshwater tide areas in Europe. The Dordtse Biesbosch has several recreational areas that are used for walking, rowing and swimming.

There are also several parks near the city, such as Merwepark and Wantijpark.

Sports

The Riwal Hoogwerkers Stadion is a football stadium and home ground of the local team FC Dordrecht playing in the second national league.

Dordts

Dordts is a dialect of Dutch traditionally spoken by the working class of Dordrecht. It is categorized under the Hollandic accents but also has characteristics of Zeelandic and Brabantian.

Typical features of Dordts are:

Using the diminutive suffix -ie or -tie in cases where standard Dutch uses -je. (e.g. Standard Dutch: appeltje (“little apple”) Dordts: appeltie)

Words borrowed from Brabantian such as akkerdere (“lit. to knock or to fit, fig. “to get along”)

The Dutch diphthongs ei and ui tend to be pronounced more like èè and öö. Recently, the ei-sound has started to be pronounced more like ai.

In the 20th century, Dordts has slowly started to disappear as more and more people have started speaking standard Dutch. The strongest Dordts dialect is nowadays found in the working-class neighborhoods bordering the city centre.

Other

On 14 November 1992 and again on 12 November 2011, the official arrival of the popular historical figure Sinterklaas was held in Dordrecht and broadcast on national television.
