Transport

Metro line 51 once served Amstelveen, but the Amstelveen portion of that line closed so that it could be converted to a tram line. Line 51 was a light rail line (sneltram in Dutch) that used to run via Amsterdam Zuid station to Westwijk, a district within Amstelveen. Tram line 5 currently runs via Amsterdam Zuid to Stadshart (city centre) in Amstelveen; it partly shared tracks with the former line 51. A new tram line 25 is currently under construction to replace metro line 51, and is expected to open to Westwijk in early 2021 and to Uithoorn in 2024.

Amstelveen has a point to point bus connection to other villages and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as well as a local network. There is also an extensive bus system.

四、产业特点/重点项目

Main projects

1, Project broadening A9

 6.png

Widening A9 between Badhoevedorp and Holendrecht

Rijkswaterstaat is widening the A9 between the junctions Badhoevedorp and Holendrecht to four lanes per driving direction and an interchange. The extra lanes will improve the traffic flow and thus the accessibility of the northern Randstad. The quality of life in the area is also increased. At Amstelveen, we will be building the A9 in a depth of 1.3 kilometers, with three roofs: one at the Oude Dorp, one at the Stadshart and one at the Bovenlandpad. We are building a total of fourteen kilometers of noise barriers at various locations along the road. The work will start in mid-2020 and will be completed in 2026. The A9 Badhoevedorp - Holendrecht project is the fifth and final stretch of the Schiphol-Amsterdam-Almere road expansion.

WHY IS THE A9 EXTENDED?

The A9 between Ouderkerk and Aalsmeer was opened in 1969. In 1976, 56,500 cars drove the road every day. In 1986 there were 80,000 a day, in 2014 130,000. It is expected that more than 160,000 vehicles will drive on the A9 every day until 2030. It is the task of Rijkswaterstaat to ensure that all those cars can drive smoothly and safely.

2, RENOVATION OF AMSTELVEEN LINE

Line 51 was a household name in Amsterdam and Amstelveen until March 2019. But the light trams were often overcrowded, outdated, did not run often enough, and were prone to failure. Traffic safety around the line was also not optimal. It is therefore high time for the Amstelveen line to be renewed.

The former express tram connection between Westwijk and Amsterdam Central Station will be converted into a safe, fast and reliable tram connection between Westwijk and Amsterdam Zuid station. There, passengers will soon be able to switch smoothly and clearly to other public transport. Tram line 5 also benefits on the same route (between South and Westwijk) from the renewal of the Amstelveen line, for example from the new tram stops.

The client is the Amsterdam Transport Region. Metro and Tram of the municipality of Amsterdam supervises the implementation and VITAL is the main contractor. VITAL is a partnership of the VolkerWessels companies Van Hattum and Blankevoort, VolkerRail and KWS. The project will be realized between 2017 and 2021.

WHAT DO WE DO?

The hybrid metro / express tram line 51 will be converted into a tram connection between Westwijk and Amsterdam Zuid station. Ordinary trams are less sensitive to disturbances. And malfunctions that exist can be remedied more easily, because they match the rest of the GVB tram equipment.

New trams with low entry and exit are coming, which is safer and more comfortable for travelers.

We will be leveling three intersections - Sportlaan, Zonnestein and Kronenburg. This ensures faster and safer flow.

There will be a parking area in the Legmeerpolder.

(Parts of) the rails, switches, overhead lines, technical systems are renewed or are undergoing major maintenance, so they are future-proof and can last for years to come.

Four stops will be canceled and removed: Spinnerij, Gondel, Marne and Amstelveen Centrum. This makes the connection faster.

The De Boelelaan / VU and AJ Ernststraat stops will be merged into one new AJ Ernststraat stop at a new location and we will renew all other stops and make them suitable for the new low-floor tram equipment - also safer and more comfortable for travelers.

3, DEVELOPMENTS CITY HEART

 7.png

The Stadshart is an important area for our city. It is a place to live, work, shop and meet. A visit to the Stadshart should be an experience and is an important calling card for Amstelveen.

New developments in this area must comply with the frameworks of the Spatial Development Vision for the City Heart. There are plans for a Pathé cinema behind the culture strip, an extension of the shopping area at the Verlengde Rembrandtweg and Nieuw Loopveld and a new interpretation of the former building of Hudson's Bay. Initiatives by parties such as Unibail-Rodamco Westfield or asr real estate must meet the goal of creating an attractive city center, in which functions such as living, shopping, catering, culture and work reinforce each other.

In addition, the municipality is developing the area around the A9 covering at the Stadshart. All plans are in the Concept Area Vision Traverse A9 - Stadshart . The main spearheads are a new pedestrian route between the Bomenbrug and the Stadsplein, the relocation of the entrance and exit of the Schouwburg parking garage, the arrival of a cinema at the rear of the culture strip and opportunities for developments to the north and south of the A9.

WHAT'S THE PLAN?

2019 - 2022 Project Rembrandtstraat

2022 - 2024 Redesign Meander and connection to A9

4, Construction bridges Nicolaas Tulplaan

Location

Between Maimonideslaan and Nicolaas Tulplaan.

Period of time

July 1 to September 25, 2020.

Explanation

The municipality will realize two bridges between Maimonideslaan and Nicolaas Tulplaan. The activities are carried out by contractor Damsteegt in Meerkerk.

Phasing of activities

The work on the bridges will be carried out in phases so that the environment remains accessible at all times.

East side: July 1 to August 28, 2020

First, the bridge on the east side (near the Kinderrijk nursery) will be realized. The contractor will start piling work on 1 July 2020. This happens for both bridges at once. In order to ensure that the temporary dam on the west side (Groenelaan side) remains accessible, the posts are deeply driven away here and the street work is restored after the pile driving work. Then the contractor starts with the bridge on the east side.

West side: from August 28, 2020

As soon as the bridge on the east side is ready, the bridge on the west side will be realized.

Traffic nuisance

During the piling work on the eastern bridge on the Nicolaas Tulplaan side, there is temporarily no passage. This will be a maximum of half a working day (4 hours). Cars can then detour via the Groenelaan and the Laan van de Herende Meesters. You may then temporarily drive into traffic on the Nicolaas Tulplaan.

It is not yet known whether the piling activities will take place on Wednesday 1 July or Thursday 2 July 2020. This depends on how fast the work progresses.

六、历史文化

During the French occupation between 1810 and 1814, Amstelveen was the capital of a canton in the French department Zuyderzée, and until 1964 the municipality of Amstelveen was called Nieuwer-Amstel. It is technically a large dorp (village), because it was never walled. The symbol adopted for Amstelveen was not based on the Amsterdam symbol of three crosses, with one additional cross for distinction, but rather Amsterdam has one cross fewer, to indicate Amstelveen's and Ouder-Amstel's seniority. The Thijssepark (in full the Dr Jac. P. Thijssepark), was the first heempark in the Netherlands, and is one of sixteen heemparks or heemgroen in Amstelveen. Designed by landscape architect C. P. Broerse, following the ideas of the great Dutch naturalist and conservationist Jac. P. Thijsse, it was developed between 1940 and 1972 and covers an area of 5 hectares (about 12 acres), and is situated just south of the Amsterdamse Bos. Amstelveen was chosen as an unlikely host of a match in the 1999 Cricket World Cup, for which the Netherlands had not qualified. South Africa played Kenya in the match. Former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende started his political career as member of the council for Amstelveen. As a result of the vicinity of Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport), and its links to Amsterdam, Amstelveen has grown and become a cosmopolitan mix of many cultures.

In the early 20th century Amstelveen was a small rural village. The turf industry had collapsed, so the village had lost its revenues from it. The village was somewhat isolated, because it had no major railway or waterway. The main source of income was livestock farming, with some arable, but horticulture and floriculture were already emerging.

In 1852 the Haarlemmermeer polder was reclaimed and the "Fort at the Schiphol" was created as a defense for Amsterdam. Forts were in those days more often named after rivers. "Fort at the Schiphol" was a ditch separating Aalsmeer and Amstelveen, and named after a piece of land from Amstelveen. Fort Schiphol became a military airport in 1916. Four years later Schiphol became a civilian airport. Schiphol Fort was demolished in 1934 to build a provincial road (Mayor of Sonweg) from Amstelveen to Schiphol, with a swing bridge over the circular canal of the Haarlemmermeer. The development of Schiphol Airport attracted many people, many of whom settled in Amstelveen. The headquarters of KLM was established there. Amstelveen once was the fastest growing city in the Netherlands and has now grown to 81,003 inhabitants (2010).

After World War II Amstelveen caught a portion of Amsterdam's housing shortage, and was also a member of the municipality of Schiphol. Amsterdam's plan was to introduce Amstelveen as a metropolitan area, with its urban and green areas. Amstelveen remained an independent and self-conscious municipality and adopted a policy that reflected many attractive new residential areas. Amstelveen's landscaping and added art attracted much international attention.

In 2003 Amstelveen was voted the most attractive city in the Netherlands in which to live. Currently Amstelveen is in the top three on the national list of best cities to live in. Amstelveen city center also received the number one award for the Netherlands' best shopping center in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

In 2018 the St. Urbanus Church in Bovenkerk caught fire. The tower remained standing but the rest of the church suffered severe damage.

The city's close proximity to Schiphol Airport makes it a prime location for people working in the aviation industry.
