The cooperation revolves around stimulating innovation, creating an attractive working and living environment and integral regional development. The network offers broad chances and future possibilities to analyse, use and further develop the "green market", thus food, fresh and logistics markets. The aim is to provide an impulse for the economy of the region of North Limburg.

1, Limburg Museum

 5.png

The museum.

The Limburg Museum (Dutch - Limburgs Museum) is a cultural-historical museum in the Julianapark in the Dutch city of Venlo. The Limburg Museum, the Discovery Center Continium in Kerkrade and the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht are the three provincial museums in Limburg.

The museum's collections include archaeological material from the Neolithic onwards and folklore items, including agricultural tools, kitchen utensils, textiles, clothing and objects relating to carnival and popular religious devotion. It mounts a number of special exhibitions each year along with events, activities and historical film showings.

History

It was established in September 1993 by merging the Goltziusmuseum in Venlo with the Limburg Folk Centre (Limburgs Volkskundig Centrum) in Limbricht.

Goltziusmuseum

Sited in the Goltziusgebouw building, the Goltziusmuseum was the town museum for Venlo, containing the town's art and historical collections. There were already plans for a "city museum" in 1924, but these were never implemented and so the collection long remained in Venlo's town hall.

Around 1963 the decision was taken to set up the Goltziusmuseum, which was officially opened on 3 June 1967 by Marga Klompé, then the Dutch minister for Culture, Leisure and Social Work.

Limburgs Volkskundig Centrum

The Limburgs Volkskundig Centrum was set up in 1987 by the Gedeputeerde Staten van Limburg and designated as a provincial museum. It represented a merger of the Limburgs Volkskundig Museum, the Limburgs Volkskundig Instituut and the Volkskundige Activiteiten Limburg, a charitable foundation. On 25 June 1984 it moved into a newly-restored Kasteel Limbricht.

The nucleus of its collection was formed by buying the collection of the bankrupt Peelmuseum in Ospel. The Limburgs Volkskundig Instituut was also moved into the Kasteel Limbricht, with its collections including a library bequeathed by the folk-scholar Winand Roukens. The visitor numbers for the Limburgs Volkskundig Centrum proved disappointing, the space too small and the site too poorly connected to local transport. At the end of 1989 plans were made to move it to Venlo and merge it with the Goltziusmuseum and possibly with another Limburg institution.

New building

In 1993 the Goltziusmuseum and the Limburgs Volkskundig Centrum merged to form the Limburg Museum. The Goltziusgebouw was too small for the combined collection and so before the merger it was decided to create a new building. Designed by Venlo-born architect Jeanne Dekkers, it was only completed in 2000.

In June 2011 construction work began on a new room at the museum and two months later the supposed 13th-century CE mikveh discovered in excavations on Maasboulevard was resited in the museum's basement., although in 2014 the museum announced that the structure was not a mikveh.

2, Museum van Bommel van Dam

 8.png

Museum van Bommel van Dam in 2010

Museum van Bommel van Dam is a Dutch museum of modern art in Venlo in the southeast Netherlands. The museum belongs to the German/Dutch cooperation Crossart, a partnership between 7 German museums in Westfalen and 4 Dutch museums in Gelderland and Limburg. Exhibitions are held of paintings or drawings, sculpture or photography.

The museum was founded by the couple Maarten and Reina van Bommel-van Dam, who started collecting modern art after the Second World War. Maarten van Bommel was a banker and artlover. In 1969, the house in Amsterdam, belonging to the couple became too small. For this reason they decided to donate the entire collection of about 1,200 paintings, drawings, etchings and lithographs to the Municipality of Venlo, under one condition, which consisted of the creation of a museum in a building connected to a private house, where the couple could live. This museum named after them was opened in 1971.

It shows the artworks that pleased them and they did not try to concentrate in one direction or the other. Typical for the collection is the personal liking of an object or an interest in its material, a certain coloring or in its provenance. For instance they often collected ethnological art. But it could very well be that their eye fell on an abstract canvas of Kees van Bohemen or a woodcut of Hokusai.

They were the first private collectors to buy work from local artists from Limburg like Ger Lataster and Aad de Haas. In the 1950s and 1960s works of Melle, Armando, Edgar Fernhout and Jan Schoonhoven were added; the art of Shinkichi Tajiri, Karel Appel, Gerrit Benner, Eugène Brands, Constant Nieuwenhuys, Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo, Jaap Nanninga, Lucebert, Anton Rooskens en Theo Wolvekamp stand out by the fact that these artworks represent early periods. The same can be said about Rudi Bierman, Herbert Fiedler en Arie Kater; Bram Bogart, Wim de Haan, Anton Heyboer en Jaap Wagemaker. Later acquisitions of the CoBrA movement were made, as well as of informal art or material art. Maarten van Bommel died in 1991. His wife Reina van Dam, born in Voorthuizen on 31 December 1910, died on 29 July 2008 at the age of 97.

3, City Hall

The national monument showpiece of the historic city center of Venlo: architect Willem van Bommel posthumously achieves that qualification. The town hall of Venlo, originally designed as a castle, dates from the early 14th century, but was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. Decorated on the inside with gold leather wallpaper and decorated on the outside with images of famous people from Venlo such as humanist Erycius Puteanus and painter Jan van Cleef. The stained glass windows feature family arms of former city officials.

The ground floor was once a busy market hall, but now mainly serves as a representative place for receptions and meetings. In addition to the meeting room for the city council, the town hall is also Venlo's most popular wedding location.

4, Monastic Quarter

The charming Kloosterkwartier in Venlo is built on the former monastery complex Transcedron that was bombed during the war. Next to the monastery is the centuries-old Dominican church, which has been a stage for cultural events for ten years. When the last Dominicans left the monastery, the Kloosterkwartier was converted into a hospice, the Toon Hermanshuis and six monastery houses and apartments. The Kloosterkwartier is now also characterized by beautiful hidden bars and terraces such as Bij de Buren and café De Klep.

5, Monastic village of Steyl

At the end of the nineteenth century, as a result of the then Kulturkampf in Germany, Father Arnold Janssen founded a monastic order of missionaries in Steyl. Two female monastic orders soon followed.

In addition, a mission museum, a printing house and a botanical garden will be realized: all in the core of Steyl. This creates an exceptional enclave of Catholic heritage, unlike any other in the Netherlands: the Kloosterdorp Steyl.

6, Tourist Arcen

Arcen is a tourist pearl in the municipality of Venlo. The picturesque village is part of the Maasduinen National Park and was originally a fortified town. The remains of that history are present in various places.

Junction for walkers & cyclists

Arcen is located on the Maas and is a well-known hub for walkers and cyclists who can indulge themselves in the beautiful green Maas area and the nature behind the Maasduinen.

Rich catering offer

Arcen is rich in terraces and good food and drinks are a matter of course here. The village has a clear scale and therefore feels very cozy. A multitude of events such as the Asparagus market in the spring and various atmospheric markets make visitors return there more often. The Scrooge Festival, which is organized once every two years, has quickly become a must-see for visitors from the wider region and Germany.

Put this on your wish list

Spending the night in Arcen is no problem and a visit can be supplemented with a trip to the beautiful Castle Gardens, a relaxing day at the Thermal bath or a visit to the Hertog Jan brewery or the Ijsvogel grain roasting house. Arcen is not to be missed!

7, Green city on the Maas

Those who look around in Venlo a bit longer will be surprised at the amount of greenery in and around the city. The Maasduinen National Park is located at the northern border and on the German side is a contiguous nature reserve that is larger than the Veluwe! The Maas flows past the city center and the Peel starts at the western border.

六、历史文化

Early history

Roman and Celtic coins have been found in Venlo; it was speculated to have been the settlement known as Sablones on the Roman road connecting Maastricht with Xanten, but the little evidence there is concerning the location of Sablones speaks against this thought while there is no evidence in support of it. Blerick, on the west bank, was known as Blariacum.

Documents from the 9th century mention Venlo as a trade post; it developed into one of the more important ones in the Meuse-Rhine area, receiving city rights in 1343, and becoming a member of the Hanseatic League in 1375.

Because of its strategic importance, the city of Venlo was besieged several times. The most significant siege was that of 1702, carried on by Menno van Coehoorn. Consequently, Venlo was incorporated into the Generaliteitslanden of the United Provinces at the Treaty of 1713. After the Napoleonic Wars it became part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

World War II

On 9 November 1939, two British Intelligence Service agents were kidnapped by the Sicherheitsdienst in what became known as the Venlo Incident. The incident was used by the Nazis to link Great Britain to Georg Elser's failed assassination of Hitler at the Bürgerbräukeller the day before and to justify their later invasion of the Netherlands, a neutral country, on 10 May 1940.

Venlo had both a road and a railway bridge over the Maas (River Meuse). The city was severely damaged by bombing raids (13 October – 19 November 1944) on the bridges at the end of the war. Allied forces made 13 attempts to destroy the bridges to cut the German supply lines and block a retreat of the German army across the river. These failed, and it was the retreating German troops who in the end blew up the bridges in an attempt to stop the allied advance. Allied forces liberated Venlo from the east, from inside Germany itself.

About 300 people were killed due to those raids. The raids also cost Venlo a major part of its historical buildings. However, some old buildings, such as the city hall (the 'Stadhuis') and the 'Römer' house, survived the war relatively unscathed.

Before the war, Venlo had an active Jewish community. Most of the Jews were murdered in The Holocaust.

Post-Second World War era

By the late 1990s, drug-related nuisance had become a problem in the centre of Venlo. National and municipal officials launched the Q-4 Project and Tango initiatives that, amongst other measures, included moving the town's largest coffeeshops to the outskirts, where they continue to do business, while the city centre was freed from disturbances.

In 2001, the municipalities of Belfeld and Tegelen were merged into the municipality of Venlo. Tegelen was originally part of the Duchy of Jülich centuries ago, whereas Venlo has a past in the Duchy of Guelders. On 1 January 2010, the municipality of Arcen en Velden, was merged into the municipality of Venlo.

In 2003 Venlo was awarded the title "Greenest city of Europe". Venlo was the host of Floriade 2012, the world's largest horticultural exhibition.

In 2013, Venlo won the prestigious 'Best City Centre of the Netherlands' award. It amazed the jury by all the investments which have been made in the last couple of years in the Maas Boulevard, the railway station, the tunnel in the centre and the Maas bridge.
