Kiuruvesi has been an agricultural area since the Middle Ages and is Finland's largest beef producer. The city was also Finland's largest milk keeper for a long time, but with the municipal associations it lost its status first to Kokkola and in 2016 to Kuopio. Kiuruvesi is home to one of Finland's 12 surviving landrace populations. The survival of the country chicken was decisively influenced by Yrjö Luttinen, who collected chicken specimens from Koivujärvi, Huttumäki and Naurisaho farms in 1963. The strain is included in the conservation program established by the Agricultural and Food Economics Research Center in 1998. Kiuruvesi has had a textile industry since the 1980s (including the Kamaja knitwear), which has now withered. In addition, the city has companies in the field of mechanical engineering and repair, the largest of which was Runn's machine shop, which developed and manufactured agricultural machinery. Well-known products at Runn's machine shop were Runni snow throwers and a feed handling system, for which the company received the Productive Idea Award in 1978.
