Pieksämäki is a town and municipality of Finland. It is located in the Southern Savonia region. The town has a population of 17,909 (31 January 2019) and covers an area of 1,836.22 square kilometres (708.97 sq mi) of which 266.76 km2 (103.00 sq mi) is water. The population density is 11.41 inhabitants per square kilometre (29.6/sq mi).. Neighbour municipalities are Hankasalmi, Joroinen, Juva, Kangasniemi, Leppävirta, Mikkeli, Rautalampi and Suonenjoki.
The town of Pieksämäki was formed on January 1, 2007 with the consolidation of the municipalities of Pieksämäki and Pieksänmaa. Pieksämäki railway station is an important junction for the Finnish railway network, and Savo Railway Museum is located in the area. Diaconia University of Applied Sciences has a campus in Pieksämäki. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
The place became independent in 1930 under the name Pieksämä as a market town. The market town was renamed Pieksänmäki in 1948, and the town has had city rights since 1962. The outskirts of the city formed the rural parish of Pieksämäki (Pieksämä maalaiskunta), which in 2004 merged with the parishes of Jäppilä and Virtasalmi to form the parish of Pieksänmaa. On January 1, 2007 Pieksämäki and Pieksänmaa merged. The new town bears the name Pieksämäki and the coat of arms of the former Pieksänmaa municipality.
Pieksämäki is one of the most important transport hubs in Finland. The north-south connection from Kouvola to Kontiomäki and the east-west axis from Jyväskylä to Joensuu intersect here; Pieksämäki terminus is also a railway line to Parikkala in southeastern Finland and the Jyväskylä – Pieksämäki railway line. The wooden parish church of Pieksämäki was built in 1753 according to plans by A. Sorsa.

Pieksämäki presents the face of a small shopping, student and administrative center. It has a renowned cultural center and 3 small museums.In the absence of a solid engine for its economy, the city suffered severely from the crisis of the 1990s, seeing its unemployment rate explode.
The town was by far the smallest in the province. It merged with the rural municipality of Pieksänmaa on 1 January 2007, giving birth to a new municipality of Pieksämäki which is one of the 30 largest and 50 most populous in Finland.
It is located in the southern Savonia region. The municipality has a total population of 19,750 inhabitants (2011) and covers an area of 1,836.39 km², of which 266.76 km² is water. The population density is 347.5 inhabitants / km². In 2007 the municipality of Pieksänmaa joined Pieksämäki.

The city is located at the crossroads of railways. Pieksämäki railway station was taken into use in 1889 after the completion of the Savo line. Today, there are direct train connections in the direction of Kajaani, Oulu and Rovaniemi, in the south to Helsinki, in the east to Joensuu, and in the west to Tampere and Turku. There are currently no passenger trains in Pieksämäki. From Helsinki to Pieksämäki there is an overnight bus service from Monday to Friday, from where there is an early connection to Kuopio, Kajaani, Oulu and Rovaniemi by train in Pieksämäki.
There is a rail connection from Pieksämäki via Joroinen Huutokoski to Savonlinna. At present, there is no passenger traffic on the Huutokoski-Savonlinna section and the railway connection is crossed in Savonlinna near Laitaatsalmi, where the railway bridge was demolished in 2018. Between Pieksämäki and Savonlinna, there are buses that, among other things, serve as connecting connections for train passengers.
Highway 23 (Pori – Joensuu) and main road 72 (Mikkeli – Suonenjoki) pass through the city. Highway 9 (Turku-Tohmajärvi) runs from the city to the northwest of the municipality, to which there is a connection from the city center via both highway 23 and main road 72.
The airport at Naarajärvi (EFPK) is quite active during the summer. The nearest airport is Varkaus Airport, approximately 40 km from Joroinen. Kuopio and Jyväskylä Airports are approximately 105 km away.

Health and social services already cover 28 percent of the community's nearly 7,000 jobs. In the food industry, Pieksämäki will be replaced by one of Finland's largest manufacturers of gluten-free products and frozen bakery products.There are about 1,100 companies in Pieksämäki and 70-80 new companies are established every year.

On 17 February 2020 (§ 34), the City Government decided that, after the approval of the financial statements, the purchase invoices will be published on the city's information network for the first time for the 2019 purchase invoices and annually thereafter. The purchase invoice data includes all industries in the city. The information includes purchase invoice information as well as credit card purchase information. The material does not show individuals or companies that have invoiced under a business name. The amounts also include any VAT. The data include, for example, the municipality's operating expenses, investment expenses and loan repayments. On the other hand, salaries paid to employees, for example, do not appear in the data. The material does not include intra-city purchases, eg internal space rents or internal meal and cleaning invoices.

1. Motopark Raceway
The Motopark Raceway is a motorsport venue in Eastern Finland, Virtasalmi, Pieksämäki municipality. The track is 3,516 metres (2.18 mi) long and is surrounded by 3,000 metres (1.86 mi) of rallycross track. The area also includes a 402.33 metre (1/4 mile) drag racing strip.
The track was opened in 1987 and was the first motor stadium in Finland meant only for drag racing. The stadium area was enlarged in 1990s, when asphalt and rallycross tracks were constructed.
2. Pieksämäen Veturitallit
Pieksämäki LOCOMOTIVE STATIONS on Tallikankaankatu are part of the city center. The distance to Pieksämäki Market Square or the train and bus station is only 150 meters away.
The set of locomotive stables includes VETURITORI, a unique venue suitable for organizing fairs, parties, concerts and educational and sports events. The space on the locomotive market is 1,850 m² and the height is up to 10 meters. The beautiful, glass-walled loft that surrounds the locomotive market allows you to expand and follow events even from the upper deck.
In addition to this unique event space, equipment, technical services and a performance stage can be rented for the events. The performers' foyers are located in the immediate vicinity of the stage.
3. Savo Railway Line Museum
Savo Railway Museum (Finnish: Savon Radan Museo) is a museum located in Pieksämäki, Finland. It presents the history of rail transport. The building was completed in 1889, and the museum opened to the public in 1989.
4. Watershed Trails
The Watershed Reserve offers more than 10 miles of hiking trails that are open from dawn to dusk throughout the year including a half mile ADA accessible boardwalk that is currently under construction.
Our trails explore wetlands, forests, meadows, streams and the four-acre Wargo Pond, which support the Watershed Reserve’s vibrant and diverse community of animals and plants. Some of the oldest trees in central New Jersey are found here, as well as fox, coyote, weasel and flying squirrel. Birders will enjoy looking out for osprey, bobolink, Coopers hawk, red-shouldered hawk, or any of six species of owl that frequent the reserve.

The landscapes of Pieksämäki are characterized by high moraine ridges. These ridges formed a permanent settlement as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. The latest research shows that Pieksämäki has had a continuous settlement history for more than 5,000 years.
The parish of Pieksämäki was founded between 1574 and 1575. The town of Pieksämäki was separated from the parish of Pieksämäki in 1930. In 1948, the name of the town was changed back to Pieksämäki and it became a city in 1962.
The Church of Finland's Indoor Mission Society moved its operations in 1944 from Sortavala to Pieksämäki. The society was engaged in publishing and printing activities, as well as maintaining colleges. Finland's only economics school for the hearing impaired, the State Railways Locomotive School and many other educational institutions owned by the Bovallius Foundation was also established in the locality. The current Air Force School of the Defense Forces was established in the Naarajärvi airport area in the early 1940s as the Air Force Message Warehouse.
The wooden church of the rural parish is located in the area of the city of Pieksämäki. Its belfry is the oldest building in Pieksämäki. The brick church of the city parish, designed by Keijo Ström and Olavi Tuomisto, operates on the principle of a multi-purpose church. The third church in the city is an Orthodox church designed by Toivo Paatela.
The city of Pieksämäki and the municipality of Pieksänmaa merged and the areas became the new city of Pieksämäki on 1 January 2007. Pieksänmaa was formed at the beginning of 2004 at the confluence of Pieksämäki countryside, Jäppilä and Virtasalmi.

In the 1980s, the soup dishes of Pieksämäki were fashioned soup, otrapouro and blueberry soup, as well as coffee table dishes such as egg cake, bun aces, serina cakes and Aunt Hanna's cakes.
Of the revival movements within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, there is a revival in Pieksämäki and a fifth revival, to which the National Mission has activities in the locality. Pieksämäki also has a Christian student organization, Pieksämäki OPKO, which operates within the Lutheran Church.
Other denominations are represented by the Pieksämäki Pentecostal Church, which belongs to the Pentecostal revival, the Pieksämäki Free Church, which belongs to the Free Church of Finland, and the Pieksämäki Adventist Church, which belongs to the Adventist Church of Finland. Of the parishes of the Finnish Orthodox Church, the Saimaa Orthodox Parish operates in the Pieksämäki area.
