The beautiful white stone church is a capturing sight in the skyline of Naantali. The church was built between the 1460s and 80s as a church for a Catholic St. Bridget's convent. At that time, Ailostenniemi point, which was located in the Raisio parish area, was chosen as the location because it met the requirements set for the St. Bridget's church. In accordance with the vision of St. Bridget, the church should be situated so that there is a flicker of quiet water behind the church.

King Kristoffer of Sweden-Finland approved the establishment of a St. Bridget's convent and its building permit was signed on August 23, 1443. The magnificent baroque tower, which is an integral part of the Naantali silhouette, was completed in 1797.

Nowadays the Naantali Church is the only building that remains of the convent. The most recent renovation of the church took place in 2011- 2012, led by architect Virpi Tervonen. 六、历史文化

One of the oldest towns in Finland, Naantali was founded around the mediaeval Brigittine convent Vallis gratiae, the church of which still dominates its skyline. The charter was signed by King Christopher of Sweden, the then ruler of Finland, in 1443. The convent received trading rights and other privileges, and the town around it began to grow. It also became an important destination for pilgrimage.

In the 16th century, as Catholicism gave way to Protestantism as the official religion of Finland, the convent was closed, and the town plunged into a depression. This lasted until the mid-18th century, when the town got a tollgate and a customs chamber. In the two centuries of economic stagnation before that the town had become famous for its knitted stockings, a craft carried on from the times of the convent.

The year 1863 saw the founding of the spa at Cape Kalevanniemi, which raised the town's status as a holiday venue. In 1922, the Kultaranta estate on Luonnonmaa was made the official summer residence for the President of the Republic, after Finland had gained its independence five years earlier.

The municipalities of Merimasku, Rymättylä and Velkua were consolidated with Naantali on January 1, 2009.

The name Naantali is the fennicised version of the Swedish name of the town, Nådendal. The Swedish name was given as a direct translation from the Latin Vallis Gratiae which literally means "The Valley of Grace".

Spa Activities

The city of Naantali has a long spa tradition. The development of Naantali into a spa town began with the discovery of the Viluluoto spring on the shores of Lake Luolalanjärvi. In the 18th century, the spring was used as a source of health and a small well room was built on the spring. The treatments of the spa, built in Nunnalahti in 1863, included e.g. drinking and clay treatments of Viluluoto's 'miraculous' health water. Later, the spa operation ceased until it was revived in 1984, when Naantali Spa was established.
