IV.Industrial Characterisitics
Eguisheim France has over 800 acres (339 hectares) of vineyards and is known for being the birthplace of the Alsace industry of viticulture. Its climate is perfect for winegrowing and Alsatian vineyards wrap around the village. Thanks to the wine and the beuatiful views, the village attracts lots of tourists each year.
Wine industry: The village hosts at least 33 growers and two very good Grands Crus, Eichberg and Pfersigberg. They are shared with Husseren-les-Chateaux some 150 meters altitude above Eguisheim. While Pfersigberg is more restrained, Eichberg gives big wines with an exotic character. Although a matter of taste, I would rank Pfersigberg first for Riesling, Pinot Gris and Muscat while Eichberg is ideal for Gewurztraminer. There are some producers of wine that you can visit, like Bruno Sorg, Paul Ginglinger, and Paul Zinck. Ex: Bruno Sorg, a medium-sized, charming producer with very good reputation. Sorg makes dry wines with perfect definition and superior terroir character. His Muscat Pfersigberg is legendary, the Rieslings and the Pinot Gris from Florimont and Pfersigberg are all classics, while Gewurztraminer Eichberg is huge. The Pinot Blanc is a perfect everyday wine at no money at all. Location: 8 rue Monseigneur Stumpf, Eguisheim, France
Tourism: Since 2003, Eguisheim has been ranked among The Most Beautiful Villages of France. In 2006, the village won the gold medal of the Entente florale, the European competition for towns and villages in bloom.

V.Attractions
1.Old Town of Eguisheim (Vieille ville d'Eguisheim)
This village on the Wine Trail listed among the most beautiful of France is built with streets arranged in concentric circles all around its castle. It's pleasant to wander around the narrow paved streets full of beautiful old half-timbered houses with geranium-bedecked wooden windows and balconies. The central square is also magnificent with its fountain, the Eguisheim castle and the colourful Saint-Léon-IX chapel. In the surroundings of Eguisheim, The the Eguisheim Keeps, the Hohlandsbourg castle and the Pflixbourg keeps.
Besides wine, the other thing that Eguisheim is known for is the storks! As you wander the streets, be sure to stop by the many shops to sample local meats, cheeses, and wine! There are also several shops you can peruse to pick up locally made souvenirs to remember your visit or to take back home to loved ones. In August, the village comes alive with its stork festival and wine growers festival.
The village is not big. One or two hours should be enough to tour it. The main street (Grand-Rue) crosses the village from East to West. It passes by the main square: Place du Château Saint-Leon. The circular streets should be seen, particularly the rue du Rempart (North and South).

2.Place du château Saint-Leon
The central square of the village is ornate with a large Renaissance fountain of octogonal shape: the St. Leon fountain (1557). The statue of Pope Leon IX was placed atop the fountain in 1842. The fountain is beautifully decorated for Easter, flowered in Summer and brilliantly highlighted at Christmas.
St. Leon Castle: At the very centre of the village lies the castle known as Château-Bas d’Eguisheim or St. Leon Castle. It has been essentially unchanged since the 16th century. This is where Bruno d’Eguisheim-Dagsbourg was born in 1002. Of the medieval fortress, all that survive today is the impressive octogonal wall characteristic of the 13th century, made up of rusticated stone. More than 2 metres thick in some parts, the wall was surrounded by moats, which were drained in 1835.
St. Leo Chapel: The St. Leo Chapel is located at the Place du Château. This is where relics of Pope St. Leo IX are kept, as well as a Renaissance fountain surmounted by the statue of the Pope. Inside the chapel, the shrine contains a part of the Pope’s skull. Medallions on the archway and the stained glass windows represent the stages of his life (birth, illness and healing by Saint Benedict, Leo as bishop washing the feet of the poor, Pope Leo the reformer and traveller, etc).

The Wolfberger Winery is one of the biggest players in French winemaking, due to its size and level of activity. To reach this degree of development the company built the Wolfberger brand, recognized today whenever one speaks of wine, crémants and eaux-de-vie of Alsace.
Alsace wines are produced using the seven varietals of the Alsace AOC terroir: Sylvaner, Riesling, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. Each varietal gives different wines, ranging from dry whites to spicy, fruity whites to fruity red wines with low tannin content.
In Maison Wolfberger, you can visit the historic Wolfberger cellar and its 1902 casks.

4.The Three Castles top of Eguisheim (The Three Castles top of Eguisheim)
The three towers on the Schlossberg hill (591m) overlook the Alsace plain and date from 11th to 12th centuries. The middle tower, the Wahlenbourg, is the oldest. The Dagsbourg to the north and the Weckmund to the south were built in the 12th century. The Wahlenbourg: The oldest of the three castles was constructed in 1006 by Hugues IV, Count of Eguisheim and his wife Heilwige, Countess of Dabo, on the site of a Roman watch tower. In 1026, the castle was destroyed by Duke Ernest of Swabia. The edifice was divided into three distinct parts: at the top was the Count's Residence, below was accommodation for family retainers and officers, then at the bottom were barracks for soldiers and the stables. The Dagsbourg: This castle was built in 1144 by the Count of Ferrette but in 1197, after a revolt against the Emperor Henri IV, it was destroyed by Philip of Swabia, the Emperor's brother. The Weckmund: At the death of the last direct descendant of the Counts of Eguisheim-Dabo in 1225, the Counts of Ferrette became the closest heirs, but their claim was disputed by the Bishop of Strasbourg who declared war and occupied the castles of Eguisheim. In 1226-1227, King Henry of Germany, ally of the Counts of Ferrette, built this siege tower in the mower yard to control access to the castles. When peace returned, the Bishop retained the Dagsbourg and the Weckmund reverted to the Count of Ferrette.
All three castles were destroyed in 1466 during the War of the Six Oboles.

VI.History
Eguisheim was fortified in 1257 and its narrow cobblestone streets create a small, concentric maze of residences, restaurants, shops, and historical sites. In between your “ooohhing” and “ahhhing” on the extreme cuteness, snack on a pastry and buy a souvenir!
There is quite a bit of history packed into this small village. Pope Léon IX was said to have been born in this region. A stature honoring the Pope can be found in the village’s main square- Place du Château. The fountain beneath the statue was built between 1834 and 1836, and is the largest of four in Alsace.
Eguisheim, birthplace of the Alsatian vineyards has been listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France since 2003, and has been awarded the National Grand Prize winner for Flowers since 1989. The historic village plunges the visitor into the middle of the Renaissance. In 2013, a popular programme on France 2 consecrated Eguisheim as the “Favourite village of the French people“. Located along the Alsace Wine Route, only 5km from Colmar, Eguisheim is surrounded by a 339 hectare vineyard, whose hills “Eichberg” and “Pfersigberg” are known as “Grands Crus” of Alsace.
