Location: The altitude of the city hall of Annecy is approximately 453 meters. Its surface area is 13.65 km². The latitude and longitude are 45.907 degrees North and 6.127 degrees East. The towns and villages near Annecy are: Cran-Gevrier (74960) at 1.43 km, Annecy-le-Vieux (74940) at 1.89 km, Meythet (74960) at 2.54 km, Metz-Tessy (74370) at 3.13 km, Seynod (74600) at 4.03 km.

II.Natural Geography

Geographical environment: Annecy lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 kilometers (22 mi) south of Geneva, Switzerland. Nicknamed the "Pearl of French Alps" in Raoul Blanchard's monograph describing its location between lake and mountains, the city controls the northern entrance to the lake gorge. Annecy is embedded in the cluse formed by an ancient course of the Isère in the Pleistocene between the north of the Semnoz mountain and the west of Mont Veyrier.

Climat: Annecy has an oceanic climate in spite of its relatively far inland position. Influenced by its elevation, summers are rather moderate on average, although they can be highly variable with extreme heat spikes. Winters see occasional freezing temperatures, but most often stays in the single-digits during daytime with frequent cold rain. Air frosts are normal during the night and snowfall is not uncommon. Besides, Annecy is in a zone of average seismicity according to the seismic risk zoning map in France (2011).

Natural environment and biodiversity: Annecy has 94 hectares of green space, or 18 square meters per inhabitant, of which about 500 hectares of public forest has been added.The favorite parks and green spaces of Annecy residents are the parks and green spaces by the lake, which attract many walkers in all seasons, like The European Garden, Charles Bosson Park, The Grande-Jeanne Animal Park,etc.

Transport:

   (1) Traffic in the city: The TRACE bus network (TRAnsports de Colmar et Environs), created in 1990, originally served three municipalities: Colmar, Horbourg-Wihr and Wintzenheim. It is one of the first networks in France to have put into service buses running on natural gas from 1998. The Trace network is currently one of the cleanest urban transport networks in France with more than 90% of buses (37 out of a total of 41 operated) running with natural gas engines. In 2015, TRACE operates sixteen lines from Monday to Saturday (nine urban lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9) and seven interurban lines (lines 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26), three lines on Sundays and public holidays (lines A, B and C), an event line (line E) and a minibus on request for people with reduced mobility. Since April 27, 2019, small electric buses have been running in the city center. And from July 15 to August 31, 2020, the Trace bus network will be free throughout Colmar.

   (2) Trains:

  The Gare d'Annecy railway station offers connections with Lyon, Geneva, Paris, Grenoble and several regional destinations. The Pringy station, north of Annecy, is located in the direction of Annemasse. The city center station is linked to Paris Gare de Lyon by the TGV. Both are served by the TER. The Annecy station was transformed in 2013 into a multimodal station, thus concentrating railway counters, interurban buses and Vélonecy bicycle rental. The SIBRA urban bus counters are located in front of the station and the taxi service is close to the bus platforms on this occasion.

   (3) Airport: Annecy–Haute-Savoie–Mont Blanc Airport currently used for private air transport only. The airport is located straddling the delegated town of Meythet and the neighboring town of Épagny-Metz-TessyMairie. Passenger transport is mainly via Geneva international airport (45 km or 45 minutes), in neighboring Switzerland, and to a lesser extent via Lyon-Saint-Exupéry airport (145 km and 1 h 30) , both connected by public transport.

 

III.Economy

Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are present on the territory of the municipality, which allows it to have a significant potential for subcontracting. The city as the capital of Haute-Savoie is home to a multitude of economic and financial organizations. It is the seat of the Haute-Savoie Chamber of Crafts and Crafts and of the Haute-Savoie Chamber of Commerce and Industry which manages Annecy-Meythet airport. The local economy also benefits from tourism thanks to the lake and its historical monuments.

Income: According to Insee, in 2014, the inhabitants of Annecy earn on average € 2 425 net per month, or € 29 097 net per year.

Companies: 53% of the active population worked in tertiary industry. In 2012, the total number of companies and establishments was respectively 7,032. Service companies (trade, transport and various services) are in the majority with 5,056 establishments ( 71.9%). Finally, the public service (public administration, education, health, social action) represents 18.6% of establishments 1,306.

IV.Industrial Characterisitics

Tourism is an economic mainstay. The city’s industries include electronics, confections, and precision instruments. The primary industries in Annecy are the manufacturing of jewelry, precision instruments, and textile products.

Tourism: The city of Annecy, because of its location between lake and mountain, as well as its rich heritage, has obtained the official label "tourist municipality" (2012). At the end of 2010, 1,300 companies in the Annecy and Aravis basin were linked to the tourism sector and generated around 7,000 full-equivalent jobs for a total turnover of 719.3 million euros.

Precision instruments: NTN-SNR ROULEMENTS headquartered in Annecy , belongs to Japanese Group NTN Corporation. NTN Corporation, with a turnover of more than 5.4 billion euros, is one of the world leaders as a designer, developer and manufacturer of bearings (3rd worldwide) and transmission seals (2nd worldwide) . NTN Corporation is present in all industrial, automotive and aeronautic markets. The acquisition of SNR Roulements in 2007 by the NTN Corporation group enabled the latter to strengthen its presence in Europe and its positioning as a world leader. NTN in Europe employs around 6,000 people and has 13 production sites, including 7 in France.

Sports equipment: the Salomon, Millet or Fusalp. Salomon Group is a French sports equipment manufacturing company based in Annecy, France. It was founded in 1947 by François Salomon in the heart of the French Alps. They are currently the European leader in outdoor sports equipment. Since 2019 owned by the chinese group ANTA Sports.

V.Attractions

1. Annecy Old Town

Annecy Old Town offers you a stroll into history. Settled on the banks of Lake Annecy and crossed by the Thiou River and the Vassé Canal, it features colorful Piedmontese-style buildings and notable structures like the Palais de l’Île, a 12th century prison-castle converted into a museum. Due to the narrowness of the lanes, most of the Old Town is pedestrianized.

Annecy’s old town is beautifully restored and a joy to stroll through. Colorful buildings house endless restaurants, bistros, and cafés with outdoor seating and pleasant views. Many are on the banks of the Thiou River and Vassé Canal that drain Lake Annecy. Flowers bloom on balconies and many buildings have arcades that provide welcome shade on sunny days and shelter during rain or snow.

Much of the old town of Annecy has only very narrow streets and alleys that are open to pedestrians only. It is a great town to explore on foot with many interesting small shops in addition to the restaurants, bars, ice-cream shops, kiosks, bakeries, and souvenir stands.

2.Lake Annecy

Known as one of the cleanest lakes in Europe, thanks to a strict environmental regulation dating back to the 60s, Lake Annecy offers you a good choice of beaches to laze and suntan on, as well as nautical activities to enjoy. The 2 closest public beaches to the city are Plage d’ Albigny and Plage des Marquisats. Bordered by large grass areas and hosting snack bars and restaurants, these 2 beaches are great places to take a break with children, especially as they have dedicated facilities for young ones.

A major attraction of Annecy is its beautiful location on the banks of Lac d’Annecy. Parks with shade, picnic areas, and children’s play areas are available behind the Hotel de Ville as well as the Parc de l’ Imperial on the far side from the old town.

Boat excursions are popular on Lake Annecy and range from lunch cruises to short round-trip cruises. It is also possible to rent boats from the park behind the Hotel de Ville–powerboats and pedal boats (pedalos) can be rented by the half-hour.

Swimming is allowed in the very clean lake. The lake is fairly shallow close to Annecy allowing for surprisingly warm water temperatures in summer.

3.Annecy Castle

Annecy Castle was the home of the Counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours, an offshoot. Built between the 12th and 16th century, Annecy Castle is a French Historical Monument that now hosts the Museum of Alpine Popular Art, a museum about the lake that features an aquarium and temporary art exhibitions. The rotating modern art displays in such an old settings gives a pleasant timeless feeling. Roam the rooms and corridors of the castle and do not miss the terrace, which offers a splendid panoramic view of Annecy Old Town and the lake.

The Annecy Castle towers over the old town and the bastions can be seen from many streets and open spaces in the old town. The castle dates from the twelfth to sixteenth centuries and being heavily restored looks quite the part. The exterior and architecture of the castle are generally more interesting than the regional museums and displays inside the castle itself.

4.Annecy Basilicas

Dedicated to and housing relics of Saint-François de Sales and Saint-Jeanne de Chantal, the patron saints of Annecy, the Basilica of Visitation sits a stroll south of the Old Town. Built in 1930, in a baroque style, it’s made of white stone and features beautiful large stained glass windows, lavish decoration and printed information about the 2 saints buried here. The highlight of the Basilica is the 72-meter-tall bell tower, which offers breathtaking views of Annecy and the lake.

5.The Gorges du Fier

Just 10 km from Annecy, the river has carved out one of the most magnificent examples of erosion by running water, the Gorges du Fier, considered to be one of the natural wonders of the Alps. Located just a 15-minute drive west of Annecy Old Town, the Gorges du Fier is a canyon carved through the rocky terrain by the Fier River. One of the oldest tourist sites in the Alps, it features a suspended footbridge built in 1869, which allows you to walk in the narrow gorge, right above the river. The trail is not too challenging and you can spot and photograph giant’s kettles and la Mer des Rochers (the Sea of Rocks), composed of boulders of all sizes and shapes. It’s best to wear strong walking shoes and to go in the morning to fully enjoy this hike.

6.The Palais de l'Ile

Listed as a historic monument in 1900, the Palais de l'Ile, often described as a "house in the shape of a ship" has been a prison, a courthouse and an administrative centre. It is an original structure, the oldest parts of which date from the 12th century.Firstly a simple quadrangular building described as a stronghold, which occasionally housed the prison and the minting workshop of the Counts of Geneva, today, the building referred to as the Palais de l'Ile is an original medieval monument: It is built on a natural rocky island.

The novelist Andre Theuriet and Charles Suisse, the Inspector for Historic Monuments, spoke out against the planned demolition. On 16 February 1900, the Palais de l'Ile was listed as a historic monument and a first phase of renovation work was launched. The final phase of restoration dates from 1983-1985.

VI.History

Annecy is one of the oldest cities in the Alps. A large number of remains of lakeside villages found at the bottom of Lake Annecy can confirm the existence of humans in the Neolithic Age (4000 BC).

Annecy has a long history linked to the strategic position of the city on the route between Geneva and Italy at the northern tip of Lake Annecy. Originally a Roman site in the 1st century AD, Annecy developed into a major centre of the Counter-Reformation, hence its nickname of “Rome of the Alps”. The city only became French in 1860 after being the possession of the Dukes of Savoy for a very long time. Today, the charm of Annecy derives from its medieval district (the Venice of the Alps), its massive castle and the beautiful foreshore of the lake.

The new municipality was established on 1 January 2017 by merger with the former communes of Annecy-le-Vieux, Cran-Gevrier, Meythet, Pringy and Seynod.

VII.Other information

The city of Annecy, because of its location between lake and mountain, as well as its rich heritage, has obtained the official label "tourist municipality" (2012). The development of tourist activity in the city dates back to 1895, with the creation of a tourist office, the second in France after Grenoble. The enhancement of the urban heritage in connection with the Friends of Old Annecy society made it possible to obtain the official “City of Art” label in 1978.

Annecy is classified with the official label "City of art" in 1978. It co-signed with the community of the agglomeration of Annecy, in 2004, a convention "Country of art and history". The city has a rich cultural and architectural heritage. Annecy has nine buildings distinguished by the award of the "20th Century Heritage" label.
