Le Barp is a town in southwestern France, located in the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

Le Barp is a town in the urban area of Bordeaux located in the Pays de Buch, on the RN10 national road, about 30 kilometers south of Bordeaux. It is located in the Landes Forest, on the territory of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park.

Bordering municipalities: The neighboring municipalities are Cestas to the north, Saucats to the northeast, Saint-Magne to the south-east, Belin-Béliet to the south, Salles to the south-west and Mios to the west.

IV.Industrial Characterisitics

AN ECONOMIC CENTER IN EXPANSION

Le Barp has a well-maintained and highly valued large forest heritage.

The town is in line with a dynamic generated by the activities zone ZAE Eyrialis which is managed by the Community of Municipalities of the Val de l'Eyre.

It offers a strategic position halfway between Bordeaux and Arcachon,

close to the A63 highway, to the airport (38 kilometers / 23,598 miles), and to the Laser Mejagoule at the CEA-CESTA Center.

Laseris Park, located in the Municipality of Le Barp, which is very close to CEACESTA large lasers and the Laser and Plasma Institute, welcomes the important industrialists which support the Laser Megajoule, but it welcomes also high technology companies or leading companies in their market.

AN ACTIVE TRADE

To address the needs of the inhabitants, Le Barp offers many convenience stores and supermarkets. The local market is on every Sunday morning and it’s a great place for meeting and exchange.

Agriculture

Most of the primary activity is turned towards the exploitation of the forest which covers a very large part of the municipal territory.

Darbonne Pépinière produces strawberries and small red fruits, exports and sells plants. Le Barp is famous for its production of asparagus from the Landes sands and its recipes.

Industry

In the north of the municipal territory, is located the Cesta, scientific and technical studies center of Aquitaine, of the Atomic Energy Commission which houses in particular the Mégajoule laser.

For more than a century, a company operating a quality clay deposit has adapted regularly to changes in demand and the international market. It currently bears the name Les Grés de Gascogne and produces pavers and ceramic tiles, smooth or non-slip, in shades of pink beige. She also participates in the Gironde heritage days. It is one of the last traditional businesses in the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park.

V.Attractions

1. St Jacques Church

It is built on the original sanctuary of which it preserves vestiges, visible on the south wall of the nave.

Inside the building is a cast iron statue of Saint Roch with his dog.

The bell tower, built in 1893, houses a 1400 kilogram bell installed in 1895.

The pediment, which comes from the old church, represents the scene of the Miraculous Fishing..

2.The bells of Barp

2 in number:

The big one is called Anne-Marie. Fondue in 1895, its diameter is 1.35 m. Its tone is in "D" and it weighs 1400 kilos. She had for godfather Morillon DARRIET and for godmother Anne Marie DANEY née ROUMEGOUX.

The little one is called Marie Antoinette. Fondue in 1772, its diameter is 1.10 m. Its key is in "F" and it weighs 760 kilos. She had for godfather Antoine DANEY and for godmother Marie Jeanne CAZABAN born ARDOUIN.

3. The cottage

This building was built in 1845 by M. DEUX-BREZES who was minister and who made it his hunting lodge.

DEUX-BREZES had married Mlle du TAUZUN, daughter of a landowner from LE BARP,

The building then passed into the TAUZUN family, then became the property of Doctor Marthiens.

Widowed, his wife devoted herself entirely to the exploitation of the gem. When her mother dies, her daughter Antoinette is the heir. She married Mr. BRACQ, a lawyer in Bergerac and who subsequently held an important post at the Court of Auditors in Paris at the same time as he became Mayor of LE BARP. The Chalet then became the property of Arthur BRACQ, son of the previous ones, doctor of medicine in Paris. After its disappearance, the town bought the property at the end of 1983.

Today, this building has regained its proud appearance and contributes magnificently to the beautification of the town of LE BARP. Its style recalls that of the beautiful residences of the winter town of Arcachon..

4.The cemetery porch

It dates from 1880.

In the past, at funerals, the hearse, the officiant, servants and families of the deceased would shelter under the porch on bad weather days.

5.The "Maréchalerie" sign

This sign once told travelers where to find the blacksmith their mounts or cars needed. This craftsman was at the same time blacksmith, farrier, wheelwright and locksmith.

VI.History

Ancient Roman road known under the name of "Camin Roumieu", which designated in patois the way from Bordeaux to Spain taken from the 20th century by pilgrims on their way to Saint Jacques de Compostela, one of the most famous pilgrimages of Christianity, at the origin of innumerable monuments built along the route.

The village was founded around the Barp hospital which existed from the 13th century. There is no vestige of the priory and the hospital which received so many pilgrims.

Abandoned in the 15th century, the buildings stood on the site of the parish church.

It was then an important stopover for those who were going to face the immense forests and the dangers they could hide. A pilgrim of Saint Jacques was it all his life. He carefully kept his “compostela”, his shell and his “bourdon”, a walking stick.

It was hard to cross the Landes, a land of sand and swamps, stretching for dozens of leagues south of Bordeaux. The priory of Barp was for pilgrims a refuge where they could rest, eat, have their wounds healed, regain their strength to continue their long journey to this distant Compostela. Some also died there, victims of exhaustion, brigands or diseases so common in our moors, whose marshes were a reservoir of germs.

Barp was certainly a land of moors, but there were nevertheless some woods there, at least in the 18th century (Belleyme map): hardwoods, mainly Tauzin oaks, and peduncles, along the Lacanau.

The law of June 19, 1857, which obliges the municipalities to clean up their moors and sow them with pines, will transform the region and make it the largest forest in Europe.

The coat of arms of Barp

In 1989, the municipality decided to endow the municipality with a coat of arms.

This was the work of M. Lacampagne, after consultation with various Barpais.

The coat of arms is divided into 3 parts:

at the top left, a Gascon tower and the priory at the origin of the village

top right, the shell and two bumblebees (pilgrim's sticks) reminding that LE BARP was an important stopover after Bordeaux on the road to Saint Jacques de Compostelle

lower left, an oak witness of the ancient forest

bottom right, a pine tree, already in the ancient forest, but which became the "king tree" under the Second Empire.

at the bottom center, a "pinewood" showing the preeminence of the forest for the village for over a hundred years.

finally in the center at the top, a sun, because we are a country of the South..

LE BARP is one of the 51 municipalities which belong to the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park comprising 70,000 inhabitants and 360,000 hectares; 27 municipalities are in the Gironde and 24 in the Landes, LE BARP being one of the gateways to the north of the Park.

"A regional natural park aims to protect and enhance the natural, cultural and human heritage of its territory by implementing an innovative planning and economic, social and cultural development policy that respects the environment.

The Park's action is particularly implemented through town planning documents, afforestation regulations, municipal decrees, but also our planning and development choices ".

Contemporary Art Forest

"Colors" by Philippe FANGEAUX

Born from a common dynamic, in the heart of the Landes de Gascogne forest,

the association La Forêt d´Art Contemporain (FAC) has been aiming since 2009 to create in rural areas a real tool for the production and dissemination of contemporary art in the form of a regional itinerary.

Philippe FANGEAUX's "colors" work was inaugurated on Saturday 24 June.

This project was carried out thanks to the participation of numerous patrons: AEC Polymers, Le Résinier, Roncarolo, Unibéton and Malandain.

The Forest Contemporary Art Association funded this production as part of an artist residency as well as the communication, management and mediation necessary for the project.

A space for discovery, information, research and leisure, the media library is open to all enthusiasts and passionate readers.
