The town is located in the Médoc on the Silver Coast, 88 km from Bordeaux, north of Hourtin, between the Landes Forest, marshes and the Atlantic Ocean. Belonging to the south of France - we speak more precisely of “atlantic midday”, in the heart of the Atlantic arc, it is an integral part of the great French south-west.

Known for its dangerous baïnes, the beach is supervised by lifeguards.

This center includes a caravanning campsite with mobile homes and many wooden chalets divided into villages (available for sale or rental). Almost 400 naturists live there year round, with holidaymakers (mostly Europeans) up to 12,000 in season.

V.Attractions

1.Gurp Beach

Located on the Gurp site, this family beach is famous for its rounded cove revealing the Cordouan lighthouse in the distance and for its bunkers.

Testimony of history, these continue to live by the graffiti that adorns them but also by vacationers in search of shady corners.

Gurp beach in Grayan l'Hôpital is a long sandy beach with a very developed dune area. On the left of this beach there are many WWII blockhouses. On the right, the view is clearer and you can even see in clear weather the Cordouan lighthouse near the Gironde estuary (to the north). Access to this beach is simple because at the parking lot you get directly to the top of the cliff. The descent to the beach is via a large sand path. Note that during the summer season, tiralos are available to people with reduced mobility. This beach is supervised during the summer. Outside of summer, the various shops are closed (only about ten small shops). By the cycle path, you can reach the beach of Négade by going north towards the beach of Amélie in Soulac sur Mer. Going south, you reach the naturist beaches of Euronat (Dépée) but the road is long (about 2 km).

To get to this beach from Grayant's Hospital, head south, then take the Ocean Road. The beach is approximately 8 km away.

Access to this beach by car and bicycle is simple: directly connected to the Vélodyssée, a track also runs along the Ocean Road from the town of Grayan. On-site parking is located very close to the beach access.

Gurp beach in Grayan-et -Hôpital is a long sandy beach with a very developed dune area. Supervised during the summer, it has a real historical hidden ... with these many blockhouses dating from the Second World War, a real journey through time. A real surf spot, this beach also welcomes all types of public having the possibility of swimming in complete safety between the blue flags!

Animals are not accepted on the beach during the summer, refer to the regulations posted at the entrance to the beach.

2.Euronat naturist beach

Access from the Euronat center for clients or from the Gurp on foot to the beach center.

The southern beach is on the road to Montalivet.

Both beaches are supervised in summer and have tiralos.

1800 meters of sand are available to you in a most natural setting between dunes and pines.

Attention: nudity is required!

Euronat beach or Dépéé beach is one of the best known naturist beaches in France. It is divided into two zones, the south on the border with Vensac and the center near the locality of Gurp. Access to this beach is difficult (except for customers of the Euronat naturist center who have direct access) because you have to go to Gurp beach and then walk about 2 km south to get to the beach. beach known as the center of Euronat.

Note that tiralos are available for people with reduced mobility in the two supervised areas.

Please note, at first glance, access by Vensac has not been possible for a few years (fence).

VI.History

The town is located on the lebade, the old main road from Bordeaux to Soulac, and on the way to Soulac, a former secondary route of the pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.

Acts of 1330 mentioned, in the parish of Saint-Pierre de Grayan, the villages of Arras and Cassac, which have now disappeared.

The Grayan Hospital, known in the seventeenth century as the Hospitalet, was a lodge welcoming pilgrims from Saintonge. It dated from the 12th century but no longer existed in the 18th century. The retreat of the dunes led to the burial of the ancient village of Carrau under the sands.

 Before 1792 Grayan-et-Hôpital was made up of two distinct parishes: Saint-Pierre-de-Grayan and Saint-Jean-Hôpital.

The name Grayan comes either from the proper Roman name Graius, or from the old French Grava, designating, no doubt, the grave.

As for the Hospital, around the 15th century, it was a welcoming stopover for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, disembarked at Soulac and taken in by the religious order of Hospitallers.

Eleanor of Aquitaine, going to Soulac to embark for Porthmouth, takes a path located in the territory of Grayan and elsewhere called Chemin de la Reyne.

Euronat:

With an area of 335 hectares, Euronat is the largest naturist holiday center in Europe, it opened in 1975. It is located in Grayan-et-l'Hôpital, a few kilometers from another naturist center: the CHM-Montalivet open since 1950.

 Euronat covers an area of 335 hectares located on the edge of the naturist beach of Dépée, 1.8 kilometers long. The center has more than 1,400 camping pitches, 500 bungalows as well as 70 mobile homes for hire and around 1,200 chalets in all. Many people reside all year round at Euronat.

Currently, complete nudity is not always respected (except at the beach). A study published by a guide to naturist campsites estimates this nudity at almost 60%. A figure that can be discussed and revised upwards, but a state of affairs which nevertheless leads the management of the Center to post some recommendations on the subject, using clearly visible signs. These signs only give advice and do not in any way create a constraint (practice of tolerance which goes against the rules and arouses some dissatisfaction on the part of purists, who in turn express themselves, quite discreetly. , on public signs). This spontaneous trend towards a certain freedom of clothing is present in some naturist centers and is not specific to Euronat (however in the majority of other naturist villages nudity is practiced by all naturists). At Euronat, this change in behavior is ultimately relatively limited and nudity continues to dominate. An Association for the Defense of Naturism was created there. It also does not create any constraints.

On the other hand, any unhealthy attitude is severely punished and exposes to immediate expulsion. Small posters indicate this explicitly.

History:

On October 31, 1947, Guy Lartigue was elected Mayor of Grayan and the hospital and also became the youngest mayor of France.

For two decades, he worked to clean up and reforest the town.

This task accomplished, he had the idea, with the City Council in the 1970s, of creating a seaside resort.

There is then an almost wild campsite at Gurp, with minimal facilities.

Also, to formalize things, we need the help of the public authorities.

To enhance coastal areas in order to open them up to tourism, Aquitaine has an Interministerial Mission for the Development of the Aquitaine Coast (MIACA).

The policy of the first president of MIACA is to do nothing where there was nothing built before and to allow urbanization only from more than 5 kilometers from the coast.

This position is not retained.

The new president, Emile Biazini, had a more attentive ear to the requests of Guy Lartigue.

However, MIACA still does not plan to set up in the natural balance sector which stretches between Soulac and Hourtin.

Mr. Biazini comes to visit the Mayor of Grayan and proposes the creation of a naturist camp which corresponds to the criteria retained in the natural space, protected following environmental studies which highlight the presence of protected species.

The decision is therefore taken (Mr. Lartigue still had to convince his City Council) to create a naturist center in the only place that allows it outside the natural area, namely at a place called "Dépée."

The origin of the name of this place dates back to 1825 because at that time, Antoine d'Epée, mayor of St-Vivien, had a house built in this area which would later be named d'Epée ".

Proposals from investors and commercial promoters start to flow, but no capital and know-how. Finally, it is the Vendaysine company located at "Champ du Roi" managed by Hubert Lacroix, which built the Club Méditerranée in Montalivet, which is selected.

The Municipal Council therefore entrusted a team from the country with the promotion of the camp on which it remains to find a name.

Guy Lartigue offers EURONAT which appeals to the team that had just been formed with the support of Jacques Fort, engineer, designer of the project.

On June 18, 1975, a 99-year emphyteutic lease was signed which means that in the year 2074 the limited company created for the occasion returns use, land and equipment, to the town of Grayan and the Hospital. .

The first chalet constructions began in 1976 with the Europe village.

TODAY :

The Euronat center spread over 335 hectares is:

- 36 km of roads

- 1,200 chalets spread over five villages, 30 chalets still to be built in the Africa village

- about 180 Grayannais who have a main residence there

- 9,000 holidaymakers at the height of the season

- 35 people employed throughout the year as well as 150 seasonal workers, not counting the staff working in the thirty stores during the summer period.

In winter, (early November to late March), only the bakery operates as well as a fitness center: Atlantic Gym.

It is led by Franc Raynaud (BEFM State Diploma teacher) and open every day from Monday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 8:00 pm.
