The ancient 13th century enclosure was roughly shaped like a triangle. The entrance was through three doors: the northern one, demolished in 1830; that of the west which was crowned with a pavilion in 1587 to serve as town hall, disappeared in 1852; the "porte du midi" or "du château" which still exists. The fortifications of the city and the castle were dismantled in 1624 by order of Louis XIII, then during the last religious struggles. This door is the last vestige of the citadel of Castillon and was remodeled in the 19th and 20th century to serve as a dwelling. Traces of tearing attest that it was provided with an advanced work. It is made up of three levels: the arched passageway on the river side and semicircular arch on the street side; two floors now converted.

Construction periods:13th century.

VI.History

There are around fifteen communes in France bearing the name "Castillon", which evokes a fortified place, but only one has added to its name the memory of a "battle" which marked its history.

From the year 845 the city of Castillon is mentioned: it is then question of "Castillon which is on the Dordogne river", seat of the viscount of Castillon created by Charlemagne. Around a castrum gradually developed a city surrounded by ramparts where one could enter through three gates, one of which, on the banks of the Dordogne, remains under the recent name of "iron gate".

The Viscount of Castillon depends on the Duchy of Aquitaine: in 1152, the Duchess Aliénor, after the annulment of her marriage to the King of France Louis VII, remarried to Henri Plantagenet, King of England two years later. The kings of England are now Dukes of Aquitaine.

The reconquest of Aquitaine by the crown of France will be one of the stakes of the Hundred Years War, the last great battle of which was precisely fought on July 17, 1453, on the plain of Colle, commune of Lamothe. The famous English leader John Talbot was killed there, his defeated army fled, Castillon fell to the French on July 20, Bordeaux in October, Aquitaine returned to "obedience to the King of France".

In the following century, the city, which bears the name of "Castillon en Périgord" or "Castillon sur Dordogne", experienced new troubles with the wars of religion. The population has mainly converted to the Reformed religion, Henri de Navarre, future Henri IV, passes several times to Castillon, and in 1586 the city, after a long siege, is taken by the Catholics of the Duke of Mayenne, who plunder it. . However, the Protestants will resume it the following year.

Despite a relative lull after the Edict of Nantes (1598), the unrest did not really stop: in 1624, by order of Louis XIII, the ramparts were leveled.

In the 18th century, the city was prosperous, thanks to river traffic and the action of the jurade. It changed its appearance, particularly around the construction of a new church intended to replace the old ruined church (1746) and of a hospital (1789-1791, currently the town hall) on the edge of the "Alleys" created by filling in the old ditch. It is the late allocation of a legacy from Maréchal de Turenne, Viscount of Castillon, killed in 1675 after having abjured the Protestant religion and having converted to the Catholic religion, which allows these two constructions, around which are built beautiful houses.

The French Revolution was marked by the bloody episode of the Girondins outlaws, three of whom hid for some time in Castillon before their tragic end at the gates of the city (a monument reminds us of this by the road from Castillon to Libourne).

It was only in 1835 that the Dordogne could be crossed by a suspension bridge, in 1875 that the railway linked Castillon to Libourne and Bergerac, and in 1905 that a second bridge (known as Tranchard) relieved the old bridge in bad condition.

World War II saw the arrival of large numbers of refugees from eastern France, some of whom would remain, and the occupation of the city by the German army. Castillon becomes a border town, since the demarcation line passes at the gates of the town; the "smugglers" are numerous and are part of our history, before the liberation of the city by the maquis.

In 1953 Castillon, for the 500th anniversary of the battle of 1453, took the name of "Castillon la Bataille".World War II saw the arrival of large numbers of refugees from eastern France, some of whom would remain, and the occupation of the city by the German army. Castillon wine

The Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation owes its name to the town of Castillon la Bataille.

The Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux offer a wide range of authentic red wines of great taste quality.

Until 1930, the wines produced in this region were marketed under the name "near Saint Emilionnais". The Syndicat Viticole des Côtes de Castillon was created in 1930. The wines from the terroir of the nine communes were then classified as “Bordeaux Supérieur Côtes de Castillon”.
