2.Carcans-Hourtin lake
Carcans-Hourtin lake is the largest freshwater lake in France (62 km²). The formation of the dunes slowed down the rivers that once flowed to the ocean and the lake was formed. Bordered to the west by the dune and to the east by the forest, its environmental quality gives the lake a wealth of heritage and protected species. Over the seasons, the lake is home to different activities: hunting, fishing, swimming, boating.
Lake Hourtin-Carcans is the largest of the Landes lakes and one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in France, its surface area is 5,800 ha. It hosts a large number of national and international regattas from the site of the Bombannes base. The CVB (Bordeaux sailing club) is the organizer. Some of these competitions are held in cooperation with clubs located in Hourtin-port. Guided naturalist tours (otters) are scheduled during the summer.
History:
At "Contaut", at the north end of the lake, a large seaplane base was installed in 1917 by the Americans. This base subsequently became a center for the incorporation of the French Navy. Currently this base is the subject of a vast conversion project into a tourist complex.
Scenes from the film Thérèse Desqueyroux directed by Claude Miller are shot on the shores of the lake.
3.Saint-Martin church
Founded in 1099, the church of Carcans was the seat of a priory until the 13th century. At that time, it was set up as a parish. Carcans was a relay for the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle coming from Saintonge. As a souvenir, the church keeps a statue of Saint Jacques in pilgrim costume dating from the 17th century. From time immemorial, Saint-Martin de Carcans was a place of pilgrimage to Saint John the Baptist: people came from very far to venerate the head of Saint John, carved stone, of Byzantine origin from the sixth century, wearing horsehair hair - a work of frightening realism. A statue of Saint John from the 18th century dominates the altar of this saint.
The current church was built in 1870 in the neo-Gothic style; the altar from the same period is in polychrome marble. The organ of the choir, made in Germany, was installed in 1971, during the restoration of the church.
A little history :
1852: 1st house, the forest ranger's hut is located on the current site of the Place du Pole. Maubuisson: wild site known mainly by herdsmen of cows in summer.
1873: construction of the canal and construction of a stony path between Carcans and Le Pouch.
Beginning of the 20th century: the canal has become a place of relaxation with the practice of fishing, hunting and the first water games (August 15 in Montaut)
1926: the extension of the road between the canal and Maubuisson made it possible to develop the resort.
1954: creation of the station and constitution of the first Tourist Office. In connection with the installation at the "mailman's hole" of the C.V.B. (Cercle de Voile de Bordeaux).
1960: the first Bombannes sailing school is founded by the Amis du Plein Air (U.C.P.A.)
1961: first lake sanitation work and layout of boulevard du Lac. Urbanization continues and leisure activities are developing: a tennis court is set up in the market parking lot.
1970: creation of the Bombannes outdoor base by the Gironde General Council.
1980: as part of the development plan for the Aquitaine coast, Carcans sets up a concerted development zone with the aim of promoting social tourism with the creation of: family holiday villages, the cultural center of Estran , of the station house, of the pole square, of the repair of the cycle paths of the resin trees, of the lakeside developments.
4.Maubuisson
Today, Maubuisson is the center of summer life in the town, bordered by 2 km of beach by Lake Carcans-Hourtin where a landscaped promenade turns into a "paséo" in the evening. Many shops and restaurants justify the nightlife. The resort, labeled “KID” resort, offers two supervised beaches, one of which is equipped for disabled access to the beach with adapted bath chairs (tiralo). The tourist office (labeled Tourism and Motor, Mental and Hearing Impaired), the House of Arts and Popular Traditions (exhibitions of old objects, cooperage and clog makers' workshops, retracing the life of yesteryear), as well as the room cinema, l'Estran, are located there. Sand yachting and kite flying activities, as well as parasailing are possible. There is also a children's club and three sports providers offering sailing courses and the rental of nautical equipment (from April to September).
5.The mill
The mill was built on the site of what is called the castle. The first official mention of the monument dates from July 15, 1627 in these terms: "the Duke of Grammont, sire of Lesparre, cedes fiefdom to Monsieur Arbouet the mill called of the castle, being now stone basti on the sunset side."
Since that date, it remains the property of the Arbouet family until 1761, then it passes into that of the Lagonnelles, surgeon in Carcans. On 23 Fructidor Year XI (1803), a certain Jean Bon became the owner of the entire mill. This property has continued to this day. In a detailed study of the Carcans mill, Father Bertruc speaks of the arms of the old mill: the latter had a stone above the entrance door which served as a lintel; we see a shield surmounted by a crown with nine beaded branches. In the center rises a pine tree on which lean two animals, a wolf, a lion. Could they be English weapons?
VI.History
The presence of cut flint, axes, arrowheads and harpoons on the eastern shore of the lake allows us to confirm the existence of man in the town since prehistoric times. It was perhaps in the Gallo-Roman period that the village of Carcans was born, because the Romans, it is said, had a great interest in logging, in particular the maritime pine and the oak groves located on the ancient dunes between Carcans and Lacanau.
The first historical testimony of the town dates from 1099, the year in which the Lord of Lesparre attributed to the Benedictine monks of the Sainte-Croix abbey in Bordeaux, the churches of Carcans - Lacanau and Sainte-Hélène de l'Etang. Carcans is located on the road to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle starting from Soulac, the “way of Soulac”. A thirteenth century manuscript reveals the importance of religion in Carcans and especially the cult of Saint John the Baptist.
Before 1857, the Carcanais lived poorly on their meager crops (rye and millet) and livestock (sheep, ewes and bees). The parish consisted of six villages: Le Bourg, Couyras, Couyrasseau, Troussas, Devinas and Berron. But it was under Napoleon III, with the creation of the Landes de Gascogne forest, that it found its silvicultural vocation.
Carcans owes a large part of its history and its economy to the immense maritime pine forest which crosses it, the Landes du Médoc, where gemmage has been practiced for many years.
A gem3 distillery was located in Carcans, it separated the essence of turpentine from the rosin, artisanal at the beginning it became a cooperative in 1922 and its radius of action then extended over the entire Medoc. Renovated around 1950, it disappeared in 1985. There were permanently 15 workers at the cooperative and 150 to 200 tappers in the forest, who worked ten months out of twelve.
However, during the years 1999 and 2000, storms Martin and Klaus devastated part of the forest massif.
VII.Other information
Carcans is made up of several poles:
Carcans Ville (Bourg, Capdeville, the gaps)
Maubuisson (Montaut, Maubuisson, La ZAC)
Carcans Ocean Ocean
The tourist poles of the municipality of Carcans are organized around Maubuisson and Carcans Plage.
Carcans has an important tourist activity in summer. The richness of the tourist economy of the town thus allows the Carcanais to benefit from numerous and quality infrastructures throughout the year.
Carcans ocean: Carcans Ocean beach, located 10 km from Lacanau Ocean, is a popular spot for surfers (surf spot). The UCPA and the house of sliding provide lessons and courses. The site has kept the simplicity of the origins. However, a few shops and restaurants nestled in the hollow of the dune around the renovated Place Prevost allow tourists to find the essentials. The domain of Bombannes: It is located in the national forest by the lake between Maubuisson and the ocean. It is home to many sports facilities (tennis, sailing, climbing wall, adventure trail in the pines, archery, water skiing, etc.). Holiday villages have been established in and around the area and benefit from the services offered: commented outings in the forest, hiking trails, GR8, cycle paths, camping. UCPA is the main manager. Since 2015, at the beginning of September, the Origin'all Festival has been taking place on this estate, combining concerts and sports activities.
