IV.Industrial Characterisitics

The town owes, in large part, its fame to its vineyard which produces a wine of controlled designation of origin, the Côtes-de-Bourg on some 3,920 hectares of area planted on about 550 farms, for an annual production of approximately 220,000 hectoliters of red wine and 1,200 hectoliters of white wine.

Bourg is located in the Gironde Aquitaine region in the south west of France, a few kilometers away from the capital Bordeaux. The Bourg region has lots to offer to visitors, from the gorgeous city of nearby Bordeaux to the highest sand dunes in Europe.

One of the oldest wine producing places in France is Bourg Gironde because of it being very favorably located close to the river, with soil that is very fertile for growing vines. Historians have found evidence that Bourg’s wines dates back to as early as the second century, when “Vitis Biturica” was planted by the Romans, and which are supposed to be the ancestors of the present Cabernet variety. All the local wine in earlier times was shipped from Bourg harbor and the vineyards located along the estuary tried to keep up with the increasing demand.

Bourg, being in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and with an average altitude of 20 m above sea level, enjoys a distinctive micro-climate contributing to its history of growing vines. The climate of Bourg is favorable as it gets a little more sunshine, less extreme temperature and on an average about 20% less rainfall than Bordeaux. The Gironde Estuary is like a thermal buffer protecting the vines from the extreme cold or frost.

One finds over 400 wine makers in Bourg out of which around two thirds are family owned with independent areas of 10 hectares each where vines are grown. The other third are cooperative members with small vineyards of less than 5 hectares.

The 4 cooperative cellars Alliance Bourg, the Vignerons de Tutiac, The Cave du Bourgeais in Gauriac and the Chateaux Solidaires contribute about one fourth of the AOLs production volume.

The area under vine is 3950 hectares where red wine varieties are grown producing 180,000 hl of red wine and 29 hectares where white wine varieties are grown producing 12,000 hl of white wine. As far as sales are concerned around 85% of the production is sold in France itself but in recent times the percentage of export is continuously rising. Out of the total wine produced, one third is sold in bulk and the other two thirds are bottled by the wine merchants and the estate.

There is a great concentration of limestone bedrock in Bourg covered with a thick layer of clay. The three major soil types present here are soil on sand and clay, clay-limestone soil, and soil on Quaternary Sil.

There are many grape varieties to make red and white Cotes De Bourg with the right blend of the different varieties.

Malbec is a variety that is used in the highest quantity when blended with other varieties to make historically great varieties of wines.

Lately an experiment was conducted by planting 20 different clones and the harvested grapes were used for producing new varieties of wines.

V.Attractions

1.Horse Carriage Museum)

A visit to the town of Bourg is incomplete without visiting this museum. The exterior walls of its building give a beautiful view of Bourg and the river. The carriages and coaches of various ages in the museum all carry an interesting history. The staff are willing to show and explain the history behind certain exhibits in English.

The fascinating details of the exhibits are explained to the visitors along with a tour to the underground chambers used by the Germans as petrol tanks during WWII.

2.Cotes De Bourg Wine House

6.png

This is an excellent wine store with a big wine cellar and a very large variety of wines to select from, and that too at very reasonable rates. If this is your first visit to the region, this is an excellent place to stop in and understand the importance Bourg has in the region’s wine production.

The most impressive part is that vintage wines going back several years are readily available to drink as they have gone through the necessary process of cellaring by the winemakers. Visitors are taken on a walk through the beautifully set up wine shop describing each and every wine. As well as tasting, wine is also available for sale here. It is a great place for wine collectors.

3.Bourg en Gironde Tourist Office

7.png

This office of tourism is located on a hill top at Place de la Liberation with a bas relief Montesquieu. But this cobble-stoned historic place can be reached by foot, and is a charming site in itself as well as housing much of the information you might want to look over when deciding what to do here. Another attraction at the top of the hill is the modest yet elegant Chateau de la Citadelle, a former country home for the bishops in Bordeaux. Although it had been burned down by the Germans in the mid-nineties, the town was rebuilt with the interiors becoming an exhibition space and cultural center.

Now the place features alluring gardens, water views and a public park. And while you are visiting the tourist office there are other places of interest available like Quais des Brocs, Moulin du Grand Puy and Chateau Dauzac besides many others, and you can get more on those here at the Office.

4.Les Brins D’art

8.png

This is a wonderful place that includes art galleries, a museum and shopping. You can admire some exotic pieces of art, or shop for good quality gifts for friends and family at reasonable prices.

If you are looking for places to eat nearby, you can go to Le Plaisance, Le Marche de Pierre Alain or the Café Du Port where you will be served delectable food alongside excellent wines served in chilled dispensers, and you can just move around tasting the wines too.

5.The Blue Angel

9.png

L’Ange Bleu is an amazing place that will be a great and fun experience. Though it is a little outside Bordeaux, visiting it is worth the effort. An excellent three-course traditional French meal is served along with performers providing wonderful entertainment. It is more like a theater that can accommodate 1200 people. It has an imposing well-lit entrance with tall columns that gives the look of the old theaters of America.

Along with good food, the entertainment begins with 80s French pop mixed with American classics. There is something for all from great singers, dancers and musicians, not to forget the laser performance.

VI.History

If there is one city in the Gironde with a turbulent historical past, it is Bourg, the pretty city bathed in the Dordogne, near its confluence with the Garonne.

Bourg was founded in the 4th century by the Paulins family. First of all a very important commercial center, it later became a fortified city. At the beginning of the 5th century, the Visigoths invaded Aquitaine, and established themselves very strongly in Bourg. It was the era of the great invasions: over the following four centuries, this region was successively ravaged by the Merovingians, the Gascons, the Saracens, the Carolingians and the Normans.

During the Hundred Years War, Blaye, the military key to the defense of Aquitaine in its capacity as the last fortified bastion downstream from the port of Bordeaux, was taken and retaken by the belligerents several times. In July 1379, the town contracted a defense alliance against French troops with Bordeaux, which encouraged numerous trade exchanges with the Gironde capital.

The upper town subsequently welcomed Charles VII (after Bertrand IV de Montferrand, Lord of Langoiran, went to Dunois), Charles IX and François Ier. Louis XIV also resided there during the Fronde from August 27 to October 2, 1650.

It was the district capital from 1790 to 1795. Bourg absorbed Lalibarde (217 inhabitants in 1800) before 1806.

Old stone quarries located in the cliff, under the castle of the citadel, were transformed into oil tanks in 1939. Seven tanks 44 to 65 meters long were then dug, to a height of 11 meters under the ceiling and 8.50 meters wide. In June 1940, the German army took possession of it. It stored there petroleum products delivered by Italian cargo ships until 1944. An Italian tanker, the Clizia, was scuttled by the Kriegsmarine in August 1944. Its wreck was still lying in the Dordogne.

Today, Bourg is a delightful city built on a rocky outcrop, there are ramparts, the castle of the Citadel, a wash house, narrow and picturesque alleys which descend towards the port ... The heritage and architectural wealth of this city earned him the classification in "Old village".
