Bassens is a commune in south-western France, located in the Gironde department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

There is one of the components of the port of Bordeaux, the Bassens terminal.

Bassens is a Girondine commune of Entre-deux-Mers, on the right bank of the Garonne, in the urban area of Bordeaux and its urban unit.

The municipality covers an area of more than 10 km2 (1,028 hectares), with a lower part to the west and to the north, and a plateau to the east; the Garonne delimiting its western part. The altitude varies from 2 to 56 meters. The plateau is the limestone chain which extends on the right bank, and which ends at Bassens.

Bassens is located on the landscape units of the Bordeaux agglomeration, an agglomeration that extends over twenty kilometers from east to west, and the Becd'Ambès, the confluence of the Dordogne and the Garonne.

The commune of Bassens may be subject to flooding from the Garonne, for areas located near the river: it is part of the SPPPI, the joint union for protection against flooding on the Ambès peninsula.

Means of communication: The entry into service, in 1967, of the Aquitaine suspension bridge considerably facilitated connections to the center of Bordeaux.

Transport:

1.      TER New Aquitaine: The city has a train station (Bassens station) located on the line from Paris-Austerlitz to Bordeaux-Saint-Jean and served by the TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The station is served by line 16 Bordeaux-Angoulême.

2.      TBM network: The Bordeaux Métropole Transport Network (TBM) serves the town through line A of the Bordeaux tramway, which terminates at the very south of the town, as well as by bus lines 7, 90, 91, 92 and 93. In evening, in addition to line 7, the town is served by the Flexo 50.

IV.    Industrial Characterisitics

Economic fabric

Out of 531 establishments present in the municipality at the end of 2012, 1% were in the agriculture sector (for an average of 11% in the department), 10% in the industry sector, 13% in the construction sector, 63 % of that of trade and services and 13% of the administration and health sector.

There is a port and an industrial area in the town. This industrial-port area is one of the sites of economic activity in the Bordeaux conurbation. As part of the planning and sustainable development project (PADD) of the former urban community of Bordeaux, the territory of the agglomeration is identified as a site of metropolitan interest.

Harbor zone:

Located on the right bank of the Garonne, the port, known as the Bassens terminal, is one of the components of the port of Bordeaux.

In 2012, the dry dock at the port of Bassens became the first French site to dismantle large merchant ships. The first ship to be dismantled there is the Matterhorn, a 115-meter freighter. The creation of this site by a subsidiary of Veolia Environnement is the result of the French will, at the time of the Grenelle Environment, to put in place its own capacity for deconstruction of large merchant ships, activity hitherto non-existent in Western Europe, the old ships being shipped to other regions (90% in South Asia) where the dismantling is carried out in poor environmental and social conditions. In October 2014, the Jeanne d'Arc school ship was brought to the port to be deconstructed by the companies Bartin Recycling and Petrofer, a new company, subsidiaries of the Véolia group. In June 2016, it was the cruiser Colbert's turn to be welcomed in Bassens to be dismantled.

Industrial Zone:

There are several activities in the Bassens industrial area, such as the production of synthetic rubber (Michelin) or the production of sunflower oil cake (Saipol).

Due to the activities in the area, the municipality is in the perimeter of technological risks. The city has set up a watch committee and a communal safeguard plan (PCS).

VI.    History

The first settlements, prehistoric and Gallo-Roman, were concentrated around the church and along the Garonne. The ancient Roman road to Blaye, the "path of Life" crossed the marshes, according to the scholar F. Jouannet. LéoDrouyn gave sections and plans. A Merovingian necropolis was recently rediscovered on the site of the Saint-Pierre church.

Bassens suffered the economic influence of the city of Bordeaux from Antiquity.

In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the barony of Montferrand. They cultivate the vine there19. A medieval tile oven was discovered in 1887 at Château Pommerol.

Bassens is a place of residence for parliamentarians and merchants from Bordeaux. Nobles, bourgeois, merchants and shipowners from Bordeaux built beautiful residences there in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Between 1801 and 1806, the commune is joined to that of Carbon-Blanc under the name of Bassens-Carbon-Blanc. The two municipalities were separated in 1853.

The port was built at the beginning of the 20th century: the construction of vertical platforms connected to the Bordeaux-Paris railway line was carried out in 1915. These platforms were equipped with ten ship stations and around twenty cranes.

During the First World War, the American army established itself in the lower part of Bassens to build a new port: at this level in the Garonne, the site can accommodate port facilities in deep waters (11 m channel). It carried out a wharf there in 1917 for the landing of its troops and its equipment: 8,000 Sammies did the three-shifts to develop the "New Bassens", a wharf formed by two booms joined by a gangway for ten berths. The American wharf includes docks and camps as well as a cold store. The installations accommodate almost 700 ships until 1919. Some of these infrastructures are still used today.

Masonry quays were built between 1925 and 1930: warehouses for petroleum products and sheds for colonial woods were built there.

In the 1980s, a general overhaul changed the layout of the berths. A refit basin is established at the Baranquine.

Heraldry:

The arms of Bassens (Gironde) are emblazoned as follows:
