IV.    Industrial Characterisitics

The municipality extends over a vast territory of 10.82 km2, mainly wooded, where the cultivation of vines is predominant, accompanied by the breeding of cattle. Our wines are classified AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, and Bordeaux. Sandy deposits (more or less coarse yellowish sands) from siderolithic detrital formations are exploited in the town (place called La Bellauderie).

A borehole was drilled in 2005 in the locality of Millat to identify the area's drinking water resource west of Guîtres. This drilling made it possible to demonstrate that the resource available in the Upper Cretaceous (between 373 and 430 m deep) is very low, hot and fluorinated. On the other hand, the sands of the middle and lower Eocene are very productive there with very little mineralized water. This structure, equipped between 230 and 337 m deep, captures the sandy aquifer from the middle to lower Eocene and produced a flow rate of 161 m3 / h.

Vine: AOC "Bordeaux Supérieur", "Bordeaux" (silica-carbonate soils). The cultivation of cereals is also a little practiced associated with cattle breeding and a fairly low exploitation of the forest.

Sandy deposits (more or less coarse yellowish sands) from siderolithic detrital formations are exploited in the town (locality of La Bellauderie).

Bayas is a French commune having the authorization to produce the wines of following appellations:

    - the Bordeaux

    - the Bordeaux superior

    - the Crémant de Bordeaux

2. Eglise Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross Church)

6.png

The Romanesque church of Sainte-Croix dates from the 12th century. The rectangular nave is lit by tall, narrow windows. The altar cross is Spanish style. The crenellated bell tower is from the 16th century. The old name given to the church was Sainte-Marie-l'Égyptienne.

Our church, which shows great attention from everyone, dates from the 12th century. It is a work of art from the Middle Ages.

Our church is therefore a Romanesque church. Built in stone, the exterior walls show traces of sculptures. The church has a barrel vault on a broken arch.

The origin of the church and its name can be compared to the history of the town.

The origin of the name of our town comes from Saint Mary the Egyptian from Bayas. She was a woman who lived in the 5th century, a woman of light customs, she wanted to repent but could not cross the threshold of the church. So she lived in the desert to atone for her past sins, then returned and was able to cross the threshold of the church, and was sanctified on the day of the Holy Cross.

It is for this reason that our church is called Sainte-Croix church and that our local celebration takes place on the weekend of the Holy Cross.

Since the 1960s, it has been attached to the parish of Guîtres, itself attached to the pastoral sector of Coutras.

Mass is held on the first Friday of each month at 5 p.m. (winter time), 6 p.m. (summer time). Each mass is followed by a glass of friendship, which represents a convivial and sharing moment.

3.      LA CROIX DE TOUS (THE CROSS OF ALL)

3.png

Located next to the association house, after its discovery in a field, THE CROSS OF ALL has been restored to replace the wooden cross destroyed by the elements to commemorate the 1956 UN mission.

The cross was forged under the will of a woman to pay homage to her dead husband, hence the heart fixed on the cross. A plaque with the man’s name and year of death was attached to the cross, but the plaque has disappeared.

The blacksmith who restored the cross was M. Baptiste BERTIN, bayardois blacksmith.

The cross is made up of a press screw. It is decorated with wheat and grapes to symbolize the bread and wine, characteristic of our town. The sphere between the press screw and the cross symbolizes the earth.

A plaque was attached to the center of "Love each other", but it has disappeared.

This cross is a symbol of peace and love that we take care to preserve.

3.      FOUR À PAIN (BREAD OVEN)

7.png

Located on a private property, this old bread oven can be observed at a place called La touille, respecting the safety rules in force.

This oven dates from the end of the XVIth, beginning of the XVIIth century; it is built of rubble, briquettes, ferruginous stone and clay. It was renovated a few years ago and is in working order.

We ask you to respect the privacy of the owners, and the rules of road safety.

4.      Le Mégalithe du Gros Caillou

8.png

Located on the place called Le caillou, this Megalith is a Menhir which attests to the human presence in the town since the Neolithic.

This Menhir is said to be part of a dolmen called the Pierre Folle de Montguyon.

Unfortunately, the wear of time was right for this proof of history, since tens of years ago the Menhir was much higher.

The Megalith was first studied on May 27, 1976, and was the subject of a publication in 1977 in the Revue Historique et Archéologique du Libournais, volume 45, pages 53-54 by M. Devignes.

To find this treasure you will need a map, since unfortunately the indication panel has disappeared twice. The council is still considering a solution so that they can hand over one without risking its disappearance again.

VI.    History

Its old name would be Bayans which can have the following meanings: Gallic bagos: beech + suff. belonging to -acos (-acum latin); Gallic baditis: water lily (cited as such by Marcellus 33, 63) - Roman baias, bajas: swamp. The existence of the "Gros Caillou" would attest to a human presence from the Neolithic.

Remains of foundries and locations of potters' ovens with shards, vases and amphorae bottoms, testify to a Gallo-Roman presence.

Thanks to the arrival of populations from Poitou, the Basque Country, Béarn and northern Europe, this region, devastated by the Hundred Years War which ended in Castillon-la-Bataille on July 17, 1453, survived. This immigration continued for 200 years. These foreigners called by the natives “gabachos”, the region has become “Le Pays Gabaye”.

In the 17th century, the king ordered the regional intendant to donate this marshy region to the Vendeans and the Poitevins, on condition that they deforest, clear and repopulate the region. A few cob houses and barns remain as evidence of this past (Candeau, Chanteloup, Luchère, etc.) as well as a few bread ovens, including one well preserved at La Touille.

BAYAS was required to pay the abbots of Guîtres the tithe as well as the “4 floors per fire”, for the maintenance of the ferry on Isle. In 1648, the Bayard residents refused to take the recipe to Coutras (12 bushels) on the pretext that they were already paying it to the Abbey of Guîtres. A trial will end amicably.

More recent immigration, at the beginning of the 20th century, took place with the resin trees from the Landes. The resin distillery has been an important activity until recently.

Formerly the brigands made return the purse to the peasants who returned from the fair in a wooded place favorable to the robbery, locality known as Pille Bourse.
