V. Attractions

1. L'église Notre-Dame (Notre-Dame church)

2.png

The primitive Church of Arveyres, Saint Pierre de Vaux, was donated in 1170 to the Templars with the Lordship of Arveyres. Romanesque building falling into ruins, it was destroyed during the French Revolution. The old building appeared to have irregular layouts and threatening signs of a possible fall. It was replaced by the Church of Our Lady in 1842. Various reconstruction projects were proposed by engineers but were successively rejected. On the advice of the Civil Buildings Council, the local authority had to turn to an architect from Bordeaux.

And it was in 1836 that the first plans were drawn up for the rebuilding of this church. The demolition of the old house of God began on September 15, 1837, and on October 29 of the same year, the foundation stone ceremony was held. Under huge blocks was placed a lead box containing various commemorative inscriptions. Inspired by classics, the rather remarkable position of this monument favors its perspective. Built on a mound, the church almost entirely dominates the town and the Dordogne valley. Likewise, this situation makes it possible to appreciate the monument of the neighboring municipalities as well as of Libourne.

Notre-Dame church was destroyed during the French Revolution, shortly after its repurchase on 30 Brumaire Year II (that is, on November 20, 1793) as a national asset46. It was located southeast of the stronghold of the command. The east-facing building was small with a length of 17 meters and a width of less than 6 meters, according to the measurements given in 168747. One could guess there the presence of a bell-tower in the shape of arrow48 in front of the church, to the west. Covered with a roof with two slopes supported by two arches49 fitted with a bell, it was apparently attached to the north of the fortified house. There was a small door at the bottom of the nave, under the bell tower, which communicated with the chateau of the commandery. The main double door was also under the bell tower, in front of the west wall. The rest of the church, built of freestone and vaulted in a broken arch50, consisted of a nave and a sanctuary with a flat chevet whose facade at the top with two slopes was to rise above the vault of the nave.

2. Le monument aux morts d’Arveyres (the war memorial of Arveyres)

3.png

Named "Memorial to the Great War" at its inauguration on Sunday August 13, 1922, the war memorial of Arveyres commemorates the memory of the men "who died for France".

Tribute ceremonies are held there each year in the presence of Mr. The Mayor and many elected officials of the town.

May 8 for the commemoration of the Victory of May 8, 1945 and November 11 to celebrate both the Armistice of November 11, 1918, the commemoration of Victory and Peace and the Tribute to all the dead for France.

The war memorial of Arveyres (Gironde) was inaugurated on Sunday August 13, 1922, near Blaye (Gironde)

 3. La Commanderie d'Arveyres (The Commandery of Arveyres)

4.png

Located on the terrace of the old alluvial deposits of Entre-Deux-Mers and installed on the palus, the Commandery of Arveyres dominates the Dordogne and only 300 meters separate it from the town center of the town. The Commandery of Arveyres is part of a network of establishments, installed on either side of the Dordogne crossing on the access routes to Spain. Placed on a modest promontory, it overlooks a loop of the Dordogne, obligatory passage point for boats to and from Bordeaux and its site, promontory overlooking the surroundings, gave it a strategically enviable location. Its vocation was to collect income for the financing of expeditions to the Holy Land, thanks to its land and real estate properties, but also thanks to the income linked to privileges of justice, established in a savage limited by the four crosses planted around the building. After the arrest of the Templars, in 1312 the Commandery became the property of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also called the Order of Malta.

From its origins to its dismemberment during the French Revolution, the Commandery of Arveyres has always been considered as the main member of the "Mother" Commandery of Bordeaux, exercising central power over all of the surrounding Commanderies, carrying its land hold on Arveyres, Vayres, Saint Germain du Puch, Genissac, Saint-Pierre de Vaux, Izon, Salleboeuf and Saint Quentin du Baron.

The Commandery of Arveyres grouped several constructions around a large rectangular courtyard, drained by a masonry and fitted central sewer:

- a vaulted church dedicated to Notre Dame, with the cemetery which was on its south side, outside the courtyard

- annex buildings (wine cellar, vat room, dovecote, stables) formed two perpendicular wings and closed the large courtyard to the west and south

- to the east was built the fortified house of which only a partially collapsed construction remains and on which had been flanked a barn and a lean-to in the 18th century.

A cemetery south of the church.

The site today consists of a 4 hectare natural wooded area on which the fortified house (former Templar building), the remains of a winery and a newer small house are still located.

Historical wealth and national heritage, the Commandery of the Templars of Arveyres remains a strong symbol of the town.

Since 2015, the volunteers of the association “Pour la Commanderie d'Arveyres” have been conducting research to trace the history of the site from its origins. This research made it possible to draw up a non-exhaustive list of 46 Commanders of the Order of the Templars or of the Order of Hospitallers who were in charge of the Arveyres commandery between 1153 and 1772.

VI. History

In 1092, Audenode, mother of Vigouroux de Gombaud, Lord of Vayres donated to the abbey of Saint-Jean d'Angély in Saintonge her aleu from Arveyres3. In 1170, the parish of Saint-Pierre d'Arveyres became the property of the Order of the Templars of Saint John of Jerusalem on a donation from Bertrand de Montaut, archbishop of Bordeaux4. The latter established the Arveyres commandery in the north of the town, the ruins of which are still visible. The territory of Arveyres was claimed several times by the lords of Vayres as well as by numerous surrounding monasteries (Fayse abbey, Sauve-Majeur abbey ...). The Arveyres plain was a marsh which was drained in the 17th century.

The coat of arms of the commune of Arveyres is made up of very symbolic elements dear to the city. The omega represents the Dordogne river while the shad is embodied by fish. Viticulture is obviously present through the bunch of grapes and finally, the cross symbolizes the Templars.

VII. Other information

If the production and the reception of the customers of the company Origine Cycles, is located today in Somain, in the North, it is nevertheless in Arveyres that the whole history of the company began.

It was in 2012 that Pierre-Henri MOREL, an entrepreneur from Arvey, accompanied by Rémi Lefèvre and Yves Amiel, his partners, created Origine Cycles. It is an innovative high-end bike concept, fully customizable by the customer, who imagines his bike from A to Z. He can choose his frame, his color, his saddle, his wheels…. A model all the more unique than it is specifically adapted to it and the combinations are multiple. Depending on their budget, the use of the bicycle (heavy wheeler, mountain dweller, etc.), the customer draws from a wide choice of equipment to obtain an ergonomically compatible bicycle.

The choice of Internet sales has developed a national and even European showcase for the company since prestigious ambassadors have chosen the brand: ex-professional Christophe MOREAU (Festina, Savings bank) and Virginie SOENEN, 2015 world champion in duathlon, even pulverized his personal record riding his Axxome Origine.

But if Origine Cycles was able to establish itself among the best, it is also thanks to an incredible man who recently gave them great visibility. Robert MARCHAND, 106, retired from sport in January 2018, but it was a year earlier that he achieved the best world performance in the hour, at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome, covering 22,547 kilometers in his category (over 105 years, a category specially created for him). The media, impressed and fond of man, is paying close attention to this phenomenon. The cameras then focus on the centenary, his journey, his secrets for living and moving for as long ... but also his bike, a bike from the Origine Cycles brand, which the company had given him a few weeks earlier.

Origines Cycles now produces 80 to 100 high-end bikes per month and is just waiting to grow. In March 2018, Origine Cycles will start selling electrically assisted mountain bikes and sport bikes. While its administrative headquarters is still in Arveyres.

On January 1, 2019, the Labbé law will come into force for individuals across the country. It provides for a ban on the purchase, use and possession of all synthetic phytosanitary products for gardens, vegetable gardens, balconies, terraces and indoor plants.
