V. Attractions
L'église Notre-Dame (Notre-Dame church)
The Notre-Dame church dates from the 13th century; it was altered in 1858 and 1878 by a Bordeaux architect in neo-Gothic style, but kept the gutter walls of the old parish church. His bedside is flat; it has three spans and two side chapels and an old 12th and 15th century castral chapel where the ancient barons of Auros were buried and houses stalls of the old Rivet Abbey.
The 13th century church was rebuilt by the Bordeaux architect Gustave Alaux, in neo-Gothic style in 1878. It retains 13th century gutter walls which belonged to the old parish church. The church was also the chapel of the castle where the ancient barons of Auros were buried. In this church, you can discover the 18th century wooden stall of Father Abbé du Rivet.
Notre-Dame Church is a religious building of the Catholic faith. You can have a free visit of the Notre-Dame church all over the year.
The parish is located at the edge of the road which makes a right angle, close to the old castle, of which it was also the seigneurial chapel and where the Catholic barons had a right of burial. It was filmed when it was put back into worship in the 19th century, the choir and the altar carried to the West, perhaps because of the proximity of the road.
In 1878, during the time of Cardinal Dennet, Archbishop of Bordeaux, the architect Gustave Alaux built a well-cut neo-Gothic choir, two chapels with a transept, a sacristy and a small catechism room.
The cult is today served by the parish priest of Langon. For dates and times of worship, inquire at the Auros Pastoral Relay.

2. L'église Saint-Germain (Saint-Germain church)
To the north-west of the village, on a road leading to Brouqueyran, is the Saint-Germain church, an old parish church which dates from the 11th and 12th centuries; devastated by the Calvinists in 1577, then by the slingers in the 21st century, the religious service was transferred to the chapel of the castle which became the parish church of Notre-Dame; the church has been completely restored, in particular the bells recast in 1887.
l This former parish church, dedicated to the bishop of Auxerre in the 11th century, once stood in the center of a small hamlet. The church was reopened for worship in 1990, after a liturgical absence of two centuries thanks to the Association Saint Germain who made the purchase and restoration and service of Archpriest Pierrot, diocesan priest, who devoted the last years of his life there. It was in 2002 that the Archbishop of Bordeaux called on the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to serve Saint Germain d'Auros for the attention of the faithful wishing to live or discover the liturgy in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite.
l On Sundays and holidays, mass is at 10:30 a.m. Confessions from 9.45 am on Sundays.

3. L'abbaye Sainte-Marie (Sainte-Marie Abbey)
The abbey, which takes its name from a stream, the Rivet, a tributary of the Beuve, is one of the oldest monasteries in France. A document from 1721 traces it back to the time of Charlemagne.
The abbey is occupied to this day by the order of the Cistercians. In addition to the regular offices, it welcomes retreatants, seminars or quite simply people who seek a little solitude and reflection.
The Sainte-Marie du Rivet abbey, nestled in the heart of the forest, is a Cistercian abbey which was classified as a historic monument by decree in 1926.
The abbey is located about three km north-west of the village of Auros, accessible by the regional road D10 (in the direction of Langon) then a small country road towards the north from the place called Saint-Germain.
History:
The construction probably dates from the Carolingian era, as evidenced by the architecture of piers and walls inserted in later constructions. It must then be a Benedictine monastery. The monastery was affiliated to the Cistercian order in 1189. A bull of Pope Urban IV detached her from the bishopric of Bazas and took her under his protection.
In 1593, the abbey was attacked by Protestants and was partly burned.
In 1779, the abbot was Don Charles Benjamin Leclerc de Buffon, younger brother of the naturalist Buffon.
During the French Revolution, the monks were driven out, the monastery, a national asset, was sold on March 30, 1791.
In 1885, the buildings were bought by the Tamize family who began the restoration. The governess of this family, Louise Ripas, healed in Lourdes, is at the origin of the creation at Le Rivet of a cave similar to that of Lourdes. When digging this cave, a source springs from the site. A certain number of transformations of the buildings are due to him aiming to give them a medieval cachet, including a dungeon tower, a watchtower, corbellings and loopholes.
Mass every Sunday at 11 a.m.

VI. History
The commune was a former barony.
During the Revolution, the parish of Saint-Germain d'Auros and its annex, Notre-Dame d'Auros, formed the municipality of Auros.
The name of Auros may come from "Au Ros", that is to say the rock.
Auros is a chief town of canton of the bazadais, that is to say of the old diocese of Bazas, located on a height which dominates in the south the valley of the Garonne, equidistant from the three important cities of Langon, Bazas, The Réole of approximately 10 kilometers. These three cities, provided with commercial and industrial areas for Langon, guide professional and school activities, but Bordeaux, which is close to an hour's journey, remains the main center of attraction. Marmande is not far away ...
The stream of Beuve having previously irrigated Bazas, crosses the town adding its picturesque to the landscapes, by its valley sometimes cashed, its formerly role was considerable because it operated several grain mills, two on Auros, ten for the canton with its neighbor of the Gannet.
Formerly, it was an essentially agricultural canton, viticulture, polyculture with tobacco which still appears on the municipal coat of arms, cattle breeding and Tuesday markets attracted a rural population of men, women and children eager to communicate between them orally. But the agricultural role is fading although quality vines are still grown there. But we can no longer see the large herds of cattle that used to do the Auros fairs. The Auros fatty duck cooperative has replaced peaceful cattle.
The village and township soil was considered rich, with many nuances in clay and limestone, in sediments and was well irrigated by springs and wells.
We can deduce a rich, ancient history, where men and women have worked a lot, some and some have had their time of fame by actions worthy of note, and the houses of the village decline a whole palette of architecture since the 15th century.
A baronial castle, two churches because there were formerly 2 parishes, Notre-Dame-d'Auros and Saint-Germain, a Cistercian abbey which resumed these pious activities, but it was Cistercians of the Rivet who succeeded the men present since 1188 until 1790. The nuns took over in 1938.
VII. Other information
Auros is a village of some importance, alive, which offers an administrative, commercial activity, but also festive thanks to the rural home.
There is a doctor, pharmacist, dentist, physiotherapist, post office, gendarmerie, notary, in addition to food stores, with in the first place, the Palmagri cooperative of duck products, which sells retail to amateurs; there is also a reputable restaurant, "L’absolu" which can accommodate groups. In crafts, there are masons, carpenters, several shops, hairdressers, florists, beauticians, children's clothes ...
Auros offers three places of worship still in service:
1. the parish church under the patronage of Notre-Dame,
2. the old church of a disappeared parish of Saint-Germain, dedicated to Saint-Germain-d'Auxerre,
3. the Cistercian abbey of Rivet in the Beuve valley.
In the respected alignment of 16th century town planning, a sampling of old houses is still visible. The main street has been called since 1990, rue de Tauzia, the transverse alleys have sometimes become real streets, towards the stadium, towards the old washhouse in Monco. But there are some older walls with elements from the 15th century at least, like the Menaut farm where the wall towards the rural hearth offers a use of flint, certainly coming from the deposit at the foot of the castle.
The beautiful town hall, well located in the middle of the village was originally a private house from the 1840s. Next to it was the inn, the horse post with stables. Nowadays, notarial study. All this 19th century building is made of stone and reveals a prosperity due to agriculture, breeding, tobacco, wine, trade. A restaurant already existed in 1860, then called "Moses" and today has become the Absolute. Tobacco, wooden, brick, stone dryers for the basements are indicative of a prosperous activity, but one that required a lot of work.
Some prominent figures lived in Auros and we can remember them, which explains some of the street names chosen by the municipality in 1990 when the village became, in the eyes of the PTT, a small town, with numbers followed.
1. Jean de Fabas, born around 1535, V1612. He owned the castle of Auros and was titled Viscount of Castets, Baron of Auros, Barie, Lados. Captain in the Protestant armies during the wars, friend of Henri de Navarre, he played an appreciated role at the battle of Coutras on October 20, 1587 which paved the way for Henri to become king, he was rewarded. He was also governor of the countries of Albret, Nérac, Condom, Casteljaloux. He undermined churches, the structures of Rivet, Pondaurat and priories. He wrote his memoirs from 1559 to 1568, published in the notebooks of Bazadais n ° 39
2. A pious Lady, Anne de Tauzia, wife of Pierre de Brezets, adviser to the parliament of Bordeaux, who, widowed and childless, in her will of 1619 bequeathed her property to found a charitable work in Bordeaux: the Manufacture hospital. She was born and lived in the noble house of Tauzia which became the Bastian castle in Saint Germain and gave her name to the street in which the hospital was located.
3. The famous naturalist’s brother, Charles Benjamin de Buffon was Cistercian abbot of Rivet from 1779 to 1785. One might think that thanks to him, trees of fashionable exotic species were planted. There is indeed in Rivet, a very old stand of trees.
4. Baron Pierre's son Gabriel de Castelnau d'Auros had an adventurous existence; emigrating in 1791, first to England, he was welcomed in 1797 by Emperor Paul I of Russia for various cultural functions at the Court.
5. Edouard Partarrieu, notary in Auros in 1828, owned the Château Beauregard.
6. In 1893 Mother Adelaide was a teacher at a small school for young girls in Auros.
7. Pierre Partarrieu was mayor from 1830 to 1839.
8. Espagnet is a place called Saint Germain, which belonged to the family of this name. Jean Edgard Espagnet was mayor of Auros for 33 years from 1896 to 1929. It was he who had the painful duty of announcing to the families, the death in war of 19 Aurosses, who died for the fatherland.
