Fredensborg Municipality is part of Greater Copenhagen. Greater Copenhagen is a collaboration between municipalities and regions in Skåne and Eastern Denmark. A collaboration that aims to create growth.

Fredensborg Municipality is part of the metropolitan region with only half an hour's drive to Copenhagen, where the city's offerings and opportunities can easily be used.

The citizens of Fredensborg Municipality are part of the regional labor market and the educational environment. Our citizens largely commute to jobs outside the municipal boundary, which is why the municipality is also busy with strong regional business development.

In the area of health, we as a municipality are also part of the regional health efforts and also benefit from the research and development that is happening in the region.

The development in Fredensborg Municipality must therefore also be seen in the context of the other regional developments, where growth is created from many different sides. Fredensborg Municipality takes an active part in the regional community and in the growth that is created throughout the region, and is an active participant in initiatives across municipal boundaries.

Fredensborg Palace

Address: Fredensborg Slot, 3480 Fredensborg

Fredensborg Palace is the Danish Royal Family’s spring and autumn residence. Queen Ingrid of Denmark died there. Fredensborg Palace, or as it translates into “the Palace of Peace” got its name as a commemoration of the ending of The Great Northern War in 1722, when the palace was built. The palatial complex was gradually constructed through the 1700s. It was designed by the best Danish architects of the time, J.C. Krieger, Nicolai Eigtved, L. de Thurah and C.F. Harsdorff. The palace and the palace garden as an entirety exemplify the French baroque style – and therefore the palace is often referred to as Denmark’s Versailles.

The palace is often the setting for important events in the royal family, including weddings, anniversaries and birthday parties. Here heads of state on official visits are received, and foreign ambassadors present their credentials to the Queen. It has been a long-held tradition for visiting state leaders to inscribe their names on one of the window panes of the palace using a diamond pen.

Fredensborg Palace’s garden is one of Denmark’s largest historical gardens. Long, straight avenues extend from the palace in a star formation, a characteristic of the gardens original French baroque style know from Versailles. Some avenues have recently been recreated, including Brede Allé which was opened in 2013 after an extensive restoration. On your visit to the beautiful garden, you will see numerous sculptures. In between the avenues you find large forested areas with twisting paths dating back to the end of the 1700s and mid-1800s, where almost all baroque gardens were converted to the Romantic style.

A part of the palace garden is reserved for the royal family, but in July and the first week of August, the garden is open to the public. Here you can, amongst other things, visit the herb garden, which provides fresh vegetables and flowers for the royal household, and the modern orangery, which was inaugurated in 1995.

A special experience in Frederiksborg palace is the Norseman's valley where 70 sculptures of Norwegian and Faeroese farmers and fishermen are presented. The valley was comprehensively restored and re-inaugurated in 2002.

Nordmandsdalen - The Norsemans' Valley

Address: Nordmandsdalen, Fredensborg, 3480 Fredensborg

The Nordmandsdalen in Fredensborg Castle Gardens is a rare fusion of sculpture and garden art. The plant itself is shaped like an amphitheatre with three terraces, centred around a pillar with a gilded ball on top. On the terraces stand a total of 70 sculptures depicting 60 Norwegian and 10 Faroese fishermen, peasants, wives and other ordinary people, as they looked in the 18th century. It was quite unusual for that time to depict ordinary people, especially in a royal garden.

The story behind Nordmandsdalen starts with the Norwegian postman Jørgen Christensen Garnaas. He observes the people he meets on his daily mail route, and in his spare time, he carves little wooden figures of them. Suddenly he gets a distinguished order: King Frederik 5. has seen the small works of art, and he orders a series of figures in ivory and walrus. They are meant to be models for full-size sculptures of ordinary fishermen and farmers in the Nordic countries, to be displayed in Fredensborg Castle Gardens.

One by one, the 70 sandstone sculptures are carved between 1764 - 84. In 1784 they are finally erected in Fredensborg Castle Gardens, in what we today know as the Nordmandsdalen.

Today, the sculptures give us an insight into what the world outside royal life looked like in the 18th century, how ordinary people in the Nordic countries were dressed, and what tools they used for fishing and agriculture.

Sandstone sculptures do not last forever, they are broken down by the ravages of time. In 1984 the Agency for Culture and Palaces decided to re-create all the figures. In 2000, the entire plant was restored to its original form. Therefore, on 9 September 2002, Queen Margrethe was able to re-open the Nordmandsdalen after a major renovation.

Fredensborg - the green castle town

Fredensborg must be a coherent and modern green castle town with a vibrant city center as the attractive framework for everyday life, business, cultural life and tourism.

This is what the vision for the overall plan of the Green Castle Village sounds like.

On September 2, 2019, the City Council adopted the final plan for Fredensborg City Center, including a stage division of the project. This means that stage 1 is completed first. This gives the whole area at Kulturhuset, Bakerdammen and Langedammen a clear and green boost. In addition, the lower part of Jernbanegade towards Slotsgade will need a new coating.

A green and interconnected area between Kulturhuset, Dr. Ingrids Anlæg and the Bakerdammen, where both the city's citizens and tourists can find a quiet spot in the historical surroundings. At the same time, the children are given a new cultural-inspired playground at Langedammen. The old asphalt on Jernbanegade is replaced with a new coating that fits the surroundings.

The final completed project must be adopted by the Plan, - the Environment and Climate Committee.

Construction of phase 1 is expected to begin in autumn 2020. Phase 2 of the remaining part of Jernbanegade has been postponed so far.

Stage 1 with green marking is Kulturhuset, Dr. Ingrids Anlæg, Bakerdammen, Langedammen, the northernmost part of Jernbanegade and LilleTorv.

Stage 2 with brown marking is the remaining part of Jernbanegade, which will start soon after 2023.

The Green Castle town is the result of a longer involvement process:

From 2012-2014 , all citizens of Fredensborg had the opportunity to invite them with knowledge and ideas - for example in connection with citizen meetings and events or by registering as city ambassadors.

The many inputs led to the planning strategy for the Peace of the Future from 2016.

In 2014-15 , an architectural competition for a new overall plan for the city center was carried out. Architect Kristine Jensen's Drawing Room won the competition, and the new overall plan was politically adopted in May 2017. The overall plan sets the overall strategic guidelines for the development of Fredensborg city center and designates a number of specific sub-projects.

In 2017-18 Four workshops were held for three working groups, each focusing on the further development of three of the overall plan sub-projects. All citizens of Fredensborg were invited to participate in the working groups, which are broadly composed of representatives from associations, tourism and business and residents.

The purpose of the process has been to get citizens' input into the functions, activities and appearance of the three specific sub-projects. The process is included in a value program and has been implemented in both outline proposals and a new local plan for the city center.

During the process, 3 open citizen meetings were held. The first sub-project for the Adventure Routes is realized in autumn 2018.
