Ⅵ.History and Culture
-History of the city
-The earliest traces of human existence in the present-day Brzozów region come from the Upper Palaeolithic (39,000 - 8,000 BC). The Roman coins found here with the images of Marcus Aurelius, Antoninus Pius and Vespasian prove that the population of the Brzozów region maintained trade contacts with Rome.
-Brzozów was located under the privilege of King Casimir the Great in 1359. In 1384, together with the nearby Domaradz, it was given to Przemyśl bishops of the Latin rite by Queen Maria Andegaweńska, successor of Ludwik Węgierski. The Przemyśl ordinaries made Brzozów their own residence and the center of the vast table of the bishopric's table goods. They built, among others the palace, hospital church, they also took care of the city's defense, surrounding the city with a moat and a rampart with two gates (Lviv and Hungarian).
-The city's location on one of the trade routes from Hungary to Lviv allowed for economic development, which, however, was sometimes hampered by natural disasters and invasions of foreign troops.
-After the city was destroyed by the Transylvanian branch in 1657, bishop Stanisław Sarnowski (and later priest Bartłomiej Misiałowicz), with the participation of the townspeople, erected a brick church, which in 1724 was elevated to the rank of a collegiate church.
-The genesis of the Brzozów coat of arms is also associated with the then owners of the town. The main iconographic motif of the coat of arms was the head of St. John the Baptist (patron of the Latin cathedral in Przemyśl) on a bowl placed on a birch crown. On the rim was the motto in Latin: "humanity (humanity), patience, love" and the location date "1359". More information about the current coat of arms of the Brzozów commune.
-The first partition of Poland (as a result of which Brzozów fell under Austrian rule) was one of the reasons for the decline of the city's importance. It was not until the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that the inhabitants of Brzozów would hope to regain their former glory, which was to be contributed by, among others, construction of a railway line and development of oil mining.
-Although the issue of building a railway remained only in the sphere of projects, while mining drilling in the early 1920s, springs of iodine-bromine water were discovered, this gave rise to the Brzozów-Zdrój health resort.
-As a result of the German invasion in 1939, Brzozów was under Nazi occupation. At that time, the Polish and Jewish population was exterminated, and in 1942 they were murdered in a forest near Brzozów-Zdrój.
-The town developed after the Second World War. At that time, industrial plants, secondary schools, new commercial and service facilities, health care facilities and apartment blocks were built. These achievements have been appreciated, among others. by awarding the city with the title of Master of Economy. Until 1975 Brzozów was the seat of the poviat, and since 1999 it has been fulfilling this function again.
-The contemporary Brzozów is known in the region for its valuable initiatives and economic achievements, and its aesthetics attracts many tourists to the town on Stobnica.
