Húnaþing vestra is a municipality by Húnaflói. It was established on June 7, 1998 by merging all the 7 old parishes of Vestur-Húnavatnssýsla. They were:Staðarhreppur, Fremri-Torfustaðahreppur,Ytri-Torfustaðahreppur, Kirkjuhvammshreppur, Hvammstangahreppur, Þverárhreppur and Þorkelshólshreppur. On January 1, 2012, the municipality of Bæjarhreppur merged but still has the name Húnaþing vestra. It has a population of 1,211 (29th largest in Iceland), and a total area of 3,016.6 square kilometers. It is located in Iceland’s Northwest constituency.

Húnaþing vestra is characterized by three fjords; Hrútafjörður and Miðfjörður, which after the merger with Bæjarhreppur are both entirely in Húnaþing vestra, and Húnafjörður, but the western part of it is in the municipality. Between them are the headlands Heggstaðanes and Vatnsnes. The municipality's main urban area is Hvammstangi, but small villages or villages can also be found in Laugabakki, Reykjar in Hrútafjörður and Borðeyri.
Húnaþing vestra’s bedrock is mostly basalt rock but also can be found rhyolite and metamorphic rocks in Vatnsnes- and Willowdale mountains. Mountains in the area are shaped by the extinction of glaciers, winds and water. There are glacial deposits in many places, but along the coast there are indications of higher sea levels, such as west of Vatnsnes and Heggstaðanes. Heggstaðanes separates Hrútafjörður and Miðfjörður and Vatnsnes separates Miðfjörður and Húnafjörður. In Húnafjörður there are several large lakes within the county boundaries; there is Vesturhópsvatn in Vesturhóp, Sigríðarstaðavatn a little further out and Hópið.
The farms are grassy and are particularly useful for sheep farming. There is also a lot of horse breeding and milk production, but agriculture is the main pillar of the district. Hlunnnindi such as drift and down income is found along the coast. Up from the countryside is Arnarvatns- and Holtavörðuheiði which are used for grazing sheep in the summer. There are many lakes in Arnarvatnsheiði and the largest of them is Arnarvatn. The heaths are green but there are rarely forests in the district. Fishing is high in all rivers, including salmon in rivers and trout in lakes and ponds.

The financial activities of the Icelandic municipalities are generally divided into A and B operations (sometimes also C), i.e. Municipal (A operation) and Group (A and B operations). B operation companies are companies in which the City holds at least half of the shares and operate as financially independent units.
Húnaþing vestra municipality's operating income during the year amounted to ISK 1,683.7 million. kr. according to the consolidated financial statements for Parts A and B, of which operating income for Part A amounted to ISK 1,521.5 million.
The tax rate was 14.52%, which was its statutory maximum. Class A property tax assessment rate0.38% but its statutory maximum is 0.5%, in Class B the tax rate was 1.32% which is statutory and in Class C.the tax rate is 1.32% but its statutory maximum is 1.32%.
The operating result of the municipality according to the combined annual accounts of Parts A and B was positive by ISK 102.9 million, but in Part A the operating result was positive by ISK 92.6 million. The municipality's equity at the end of 2019 amounted to ISK 1,637.1 million according to the balance sheet, and the equity of Part A amounted to ISK 1,488.1 million.
For reference, Reykjavik’s 2018 total operating revenue (A and B) amounted to ISK 179,968 million.

The area's main industries are agriculture and fisheries.
Hvammstangi is Húnaþing vestra’s main urban area. Hvammstangi was made an approved trading place in 1895, but then there were no residential buildings on the site. The first one was built in 1900. Fishing also started there on the seaweed and harbor conditions there are now good. Shrimp and grayling are mostly caught.
At Hvammstangi there are various services for the forces in Húnaþing vestra. Húnaþing vestra district heating in Laugarbakki provides Hvammstangi with hot water, but a district heating pipeline was laid there in 1972. 1. Icelandic Seal Center
The seal center at Hvammstangi began operations in 2005 and its main goals are to promote increased tourism in Húnaþing vestra, build and maintain a center that deals with the way of life of seals in Iceland and is responsible for the development of sustainable nature-related tourism, especially with regard to seal watching. The Seal Center is a powerful research center with two research departments, on the one hand the Biology Research Department and the other, the Tourism Research Department, where diverse research on seals in Iceland is conducted and information on seals and other marine mammals is shared. There is a small coffee shop and souvenir shop and information center in Húnaþing vestra. Further information on activities and opening hours can be found on the centre's website.
2. Húnvetningar and Strandamanna Regional Museum
At the Húnvetningar and Strandamanna Regional Museum, emphasis is placed on the lives and work of people and the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The museum has two exhibitions in each gallery. The first is an exhibition of shark fishing by Húnaflói, but the period of shark fishing was a remarkable period in the economic history of the districts by Húnaflói. There you can see one of the museum's key treasures, the shark ship Ófeig from Ófeigsfjörður in Ströndur. It was built in 1875. It covers the history of the ship, which is the only vessel of its kind that has been preserved in Iceland, shows artefacts that are all related to shark fishing in some way, tells about the culture that was created around the fishing and more.

Byggðasafn Húnvetningar og Strandamanna is located in Reykjar in Hrútafjörður in Húnaþing vestra, almost a kilometer from highway one. The museum teaches more than 3,000 primary school students a year from all over the country. It is taught three times a week during the winter. 3. Hvítserkur in Vatnsnes
Hvítserkur is a unique rock about 15 meters high that stands on the shoreline at Sigríðarstaðaós on the east side of Vatnsnes. It is about 30 km drive from the main road north along Vesturhóp to Hvítserk and a trip that can be recommended. Near Hvítserk in the mouth of Lake Sigríðarstaðavatn you will find one of the best seal watching places in the country. There are several hundred seals lying on the sand walking on the sand or swimming in the sea every day of the year.
There is a legend about Hvítserk that in ancient times he was a troll who lived north of Strandir who wanted to break down the church bells of Þingeyraklausturskirkja. Hvammstangi is a neat and warm town that is an ideal destination. The place is 6 km from the main road by Miðfjörður on the way out to Vatnsnes and there live about 600 people. The local history of the place spans over 100 years. In the Icelandic Seal Center, it is possible to view an educational exhibition on seals near Iceland, where the Húnaþing vestra information center is located. In the swimming pool, travelers can relax in the hot tubs or take a refreshing swim. The sheltered campsite in Kirkjuhvammi offers a comfortable service building and is close to exciting hiking trails. The level of service at Hvammstangi is high and includes banks, post offices, cafés, supermarkets, health care / hospitals, dental services, pharmacies, hairdressing salons, car repair shops, car sales, slaughterhouses and various smaller companies in various sectors.
Laugarbakki stands by the main road above Miðfjarðará. There is geothermal energy that is used for the village and the town of Hvammstangi. Handverkshúsið Langafit is located on Laugarbakki and there is also sleeping bag accommodation and a camping site by the Ásbyrgi community center, which is rented out for family reunions. In Grettisból, a center is run in honor of Grettir the Strong and the annual Grettir Festival is held there. There is also Hotel Laugarbakki . During the summer, there is a relatively passable road up from Miðfjarðardalur to Arnarvatn.
Borðeyri on the west side of Hrútafjörður is one of the smallest villages in the country. The place is mentioned in ancient sources and was for a long time a great trading place for the surrounding countryside. Today, there is a kindergarten and primary school, a car workshop and tourism in Tangahús. One of the oldest houses in the place is Riis hús, built in 1862. It has been renovated on the outside and makes a great impression on the place. With the merger of Húnaþing vestra and Bæjarhreppur in 2012, Borðeyri is now part of the merged municipality of Húnaþing vestra.

Fire In Húnaþing Festival
Eldur í Húnaþingi is an exciting festival of performing arts and entertainment in the open air in a true community spirit. It is a music and art festival, a five-day gathering that offers a number of concerts, games and exhibitions that show leading figures in music, dance, comedy, films, multi-purpose theater, street art and family entertainment in Iceland and abroad.
The Fire Summer Festival offered the audience its first full season in 2003.
The first summer festivals focused on artists in the community, neighborhood competitions and games, but have since become more popular and diverse in nature. They now cover a wide range of arts, activities, educational opportunities and environmental issues. What began as a vision for a cultural event that would bring society together, is now flourishing as the largest art festival in the area, connecting spectators with world-class artists, expanding the horizons of people and making Húnaþing vestra the center of art and culture in Northwest Iceland.
Today, Eldur í Húnaþing offers two parallel programs, one employment program in the "main field" and another that promotes community development in various places and areas in the municipality as well as in Hvammstangi. Sold exhibitions in the main field of interior design offer music, dance, theater performances, art exhibitions and world-class comedy.
