Álftanes is the name of many smaller peninsulas in Iceland. It means swan peninsula. The best known of these peninsulas extrudes from the eastern part of Reykjanes with the town of the same name in the Capital Region of Iceland. The municipality of Álftanes was merged into the neighboring municipality of Garðabær in January 2013. Álftanes had a population of 2,484 as of January 2011. The town contains the official residence of the President of Iceland, Bessastaðir.

Financial assistance in Garðabær is subject to rules approved by the town council in accordance with Article 21. The municipality's operating income during the year amounted to ISK 15,859 million. kr. according to the annual accounts for Parts A and B, of which operating income for Part A amounted to ISK 15,025 million. kr.

The tax rate was 13.70% but its statutory maximum is 14.52%. The tax rate for real estate tax in category A was 0.2%, but its statutory maximum is 0.5%, in category B the tax rate was 1.32%, which is mandatory, and in category C, the tax rate was 1.65%, but its statutory maximum is 1.32% in addition to the authority of local governments to increase the levy on categories A and C by up to 25%.

The operating result of the municipality, according to the annual accounts of Parts A and B, was positive by ISK 513 million. It also contains references to further information for assistance, for instance addresses, telephone numbers and websites for various institutions and organizations.

The aim of the development funds for pre-schools and primary schools in Garðabær is to promote the development and stronger internal work of schools in Garðabær. Individual teachers, groups of teachers, other professionals who work at compulsory schools in Garðabær, one school or more schools / professionals together as well as the education and culture department in collaboration with schools, can apply for a grant from the Development Fund. The first allocations from the pre-school and primary school development funds took place in the spring of 2015.

In their case, it was stated that in order for the reception and support of these new residents of the municipality to be as successful as possible, it is crucial that individuals from the local community take an active part. 1. Icelandic Design Museum

Hönnunarsafn Íslands is run by Garðabær with an agreement with the Ministry of Culture from 2007. The museum's exhibition facilities are at Garðatorgi 1 in Garðabær. The Icelandic Design Museum is intended to show and preserve the part of Icelandic cultural history that relates to design, especially from the turn of the century 1900 to the present day. Since the museum was founded in 1998, inputs have been received on a regular basis. A large part of the collection has come as gifts. The museum also buys, as far as possible, significant items in the history of Icelandic design. Hönnunarsafn Íslands is responsible for educational work that is not only limited to its exhibitions and strives to strengthen book choices on Icelandic and international design so that the Icelandic academic community and the general public can benefit from it. The Icelandic Museum of Design collaborates with other countries within the museum platform and works actively within the Icelandic museum platform. 2. Hook at Garðaholt

Krókur á Garðaholt is a small corrugated iron-clad brush farm that was rebuilt from a turf farm in 1923. Today the farm has three brushes, but in 1923 the town's central brush was built and the town houses then only a bathroom and kitchen as well as a small shed by the front door. Krókur is located in the vicinity of the meeting house at Garðaholt.

In the spring of 1934 Þorbjörg Stefanía Guðjónsdóttir got an apartment in Krókur but her husband was Vilmundur Gíslason. The couple had four children and Guðrún Sveinsdóttir, Vilmundur's mother, also lived with them. Þorbjörg Stefanía Guðjónsdóttir (called Tobba) was born on May 1, 1899. Her birthday was always a big holiday for the family. Krókur was inhabited until 1985 when Þorbjörg died.

The descendants of Þorbjörg and Vilmundur in Krókur gave Garðabær the townhouses in Krókur as well as outbuildings and furniture in 1998 on the condition that the town would be rebuilt. Architect Jón Nordsteien directed the renovation of the town and Einar Hjartarson, a master builder, was hired to do the work. The sisters Elín and Vilborg Vilmundardætur supervised the arrangement of the houses. The town is a good example of the housing and way of life of the people in this part of the country in the first half of the 20th century.

The role of the Library is to provide Garðbær residents, both children and adults, with access to a variety of book options and electronic media for education and entertainment, including computer equipment and information in computerized form. The library is open weekdays at 9-19. During the winter season from October 1st to May 1st it is open on Saturdays at 11-15, the first Friday of each month is open at 11 -19, Garðabær Library is open to everyone, both children and adults. The headland lies to the northwest between Hafnarfjörður to the south and Skerjafjörður to the north. The headland is low-lying and has quite a bit of lava, Gálgahraun. There is a growing settlement on the headland. The best known places in Álftanes are Bessastaðir and Garðar. Bessastaðir is home to the President of Iceland. Gardens are a church and a former rectory. In Gálgahraun there will have been a place of execution for criminals in the past. At the far end of Álftanes is Skansinn, where a fortress was built to defend the royal court at Bessastaðir if pirates were to make their way there.

The headland was previously divided between two municipalities, the outer part was the municipality of Álftanes (formerly Bessastaðahreppur) but the inner part belonged to Garðabær. In parallel with the referendum on the proposals of the Constitutional Council on 20 October 2012, a general election was held in Garðabær and the municipality of Álftanes and their merger into one municipality was approved. The new municipality is called Garðabær, but it had been agreed before the election.

Since 1992, Garðabær has provided scholarships to artists. The Culture and Museums Committee makes proposals to the town council for allocation and only the artists who live in Garðabær can be considered. The town council of Garðabær provides an annual grant to the town artist or town artists, as further decided in each case when preparing the budget. The town is home to the Ungmennafélag Álftaness multi-sport club. The sports center in Álftanes has a 25x12 m outdoor pool, 12x7 m indoor pool, 2 hot tubs, a whirlpool, a sauna, an 85 m long toboggan run and a wave pool. There is also a multi-purpose sports hall 22x44 m, an outdoor soccer field and great hiking and jogging trails. Also nearby is a 9-hole golf course. Ásgarður has training and competition facilities for athletes of all ages, a public swimming pool, a gymnasium, multi-purpose halls and an endurance hall for the public that includes access to a swimming pool. In Mýrinn, there is a multi-purpose hall, 44 x 45.9 m in size, which can accommodate two legal handball courts. The house also has a teaching pool with a hot tub and six changing rooms. The Zealand Sports Center has a gym for basketball, volleyball and badminton. There is also an indoor swimming pool with hot tub and a specialized ballroom. There are special changing rooms for the pool.

The fishing season in Vífilsstaðavatn lasts from 1 April to 15 September. Angling licenses in Vífilsstaðavatn are sold with the fishing card at N1, Olís outlets and fishing tackle shops all over the country. The fishing card can also be purchased on the fishing card's website and the card is then sent by post to the buyer free of charge. The fishing license costs ISK 7,900 and provides access to 34 water areas across the country. Please note that the fishing card is only valid for one rod, but children under the age of 14 fish for free with a cardholder.
