Industry has been a big and growing employer: a cement plant has been operated in the town since the 1950s, and an aluminum smelting plant has been in operation near the town since 1998.
Akranes is actually the name of the entire headland between Hvalfjörður and Leirárvogur and Akrafjall sits in the middle. The headland is divided from ancient times between two districts: Akraneshreppur to the south and west and Skilmannahreppur to the north and east. In the 19th century, urbanization began to form around fishing and trade on Skipaskagi at the far end of the peninsula. In 1885 it was decided to divide Akraneshreppur in two because of the different interests of the town and the countryside. It became the town and its immediate vicinity to Ytri-Akraneshreppur and the countryside into Akrafjall to Innri-Akraneshreppur. Ytri-Akraneshreppur received town rights in 1942 and was named Akraneskaupstaður after that.
Even today, the fishing industry is the town's most important industry, but trade is also important, as is industry. The town has a cement factory that has been in operation since the 1960s and in Grundartangi, close to the town, there is an aluminum smelter that has been in operation since 1998.
