₋Ogallala is a city in and the county seat of Keith County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 4,737 at the 2010 census. In the days of the Nebraska Territory, the city was a stop on the Pony Express and later along the transcontinental railroad. The Ogallala Aquifer was named after the city.

1. Lake McConaughy

₋Nearly everything about Lake McConaughy is big. At 30,000 surface acres it is Nebraska’s largest reservoir, its dam is among the largest of its type in the world and its fish grow to trophy proportions, accounting for several state records. Even its nickname, “Big Mac,” reflects its size.

₋Located eight miles northeast of Ogallala, Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area is known to most Nebraskans and residents of neighboring states as a great place for outdoor recreation. Lake Mac’s white sand beaches and clear waters are a favorite with campers, boaters, wind surfers, swimmers, water skiers, picnickers, scuba divers, hunters, anglers and others seeking outdoor fun.

2.Mansion on the Hill

-An authentic Victorian style home, the Mansion on the Hill was Ogallala’s finest residence when it was completed in 1887. Today, it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is a favorite with visitors to Ogallala.

-The Mansion was built by L.A. Brandhoefer, and was made of red brick kilned at the local brick factory. The home was first occupied for any length of time by the H.L. McWilliams family.  Mr. McWilliams was a local banker, and his wife enjoyed entertaining from the beautiful home.

-Located at the corner of West 10th and Spruce Street, the mansion has many unique features, including ten foot ceilings, sixteen inch thick solid brick walls, walnut shuttered windows, and solid brass hardware throughout. Other attractions include two beautifully hand carved cherry wood fireplaces, carved corner blocks and panel inserts on doors and window frames, and ornate curved staircase leading to the second floor.

-Visitors may tour the authentic one room school house on the Mansion grounds. Built in 1902, the District #7 school house was originally located 5 miles south of Roscoe. The O’Brien/Lute home, an early 1900s homestead era dwelling, is also available for viewing.

-Owned by the Keith County Historical Society, the Mansion, school house, and O’Brien/Lute home have been preserved and maintained as historical landmarks and visitor attractions.

oThe Mansion is usually open from the Friday before Memorial Day through the Sunday before Labor Day, Tuesday through Saturday 9:00-4:00, Sundays 11:00-4:00, and closed Mondays.

3.Petrified Wood Gallery

The Petrified Wood Gallery is a showcase of natural history specializing in ancient woods and fossils from around the world plus Native American arrowheads and artifacts -- many from within 25 miles of Ogallala. The collection is a result of the efforts of brothers Howard and Harvey Kenfield who began collecting in the 1950's. In 2000, the Kenfields donated their collection for display in Ogallala and for the benefit of the general public. In 2007, the Friends of the Kenfield Gallery received designation as a 501(c)(3) organization.

VI.History

-Ogallala first gained fame as a terminus for cattle drives that traveled from Texas to the Union Pacific railhead located there. These trails are known as the Western or Great Western trails. The Union Pacific Railroad reached Ogallala on May 24, 1867. The city itself was not laid out until 1875 and not incorporated until 1884 The town's name comes from the Oglala Sioux tribe.
